Weekend Discussion Thread: A Better Final Movie?

Again this week, I no longer can find the e-mail that came in with this from an alert reader. To the sender, my apologies. Please feel free to take credit in the comments and feel free to elaborate.

But an e-mail came in saying the the sender never really liked that “Diabolik” was chosen as the very last movie riffed on the show, and wondered if fans could suggest a more appropriate one.

Me, I always felt Zsa Zsa Gabor’s immortal “Queen of Outer Space” would have been a great choice, since it would have made Sci-Fi Channel head honcho Barry Schulman’s goof at the second convention come true.

What would you have picked?

There’s a series of movies called “Carnisaur” about genetically altered Dino’s or something. They’re the kind of movies that SyFy shows now in the old mst timeslot. Only difference is that the monsters are little hand puppets instead of crappy cgi.

Or if anyone has ever seen the movie “anklebiters”. Little midget vampires. I think that’s all that needs to be said about that one.

Hand puppets? Oh, well, then, Rock And Roll Nightmare, the perfect companion piece to Zombie Nightmare.

Carnosaur, the very poor man’s Jurassic Park. That would have been a good choice, but I think it would be too close to Future War for the Brains to seriously consider that movie.

I dunno….I`m starting to consider some of Kevin Costner`s ill-conceived, over-blown ‘epics’….like ‘The Postman’ or ‘Waterworld’.

After all, with the running times of those to play with, it would be some …’epic’…riffing.

I’m surprised no one mentioned Gymkata yet as a good final movie. I know Tom liked to say the word during fight scenes as an equivalent to hi-ya!

Gymkata is one of those movies, like Night of the Lepus, that occupies one of those special places in MST3K lore that were mentioned, but never riffed.

If Pearl had sent “The Brain From Planet Arous” as the final movie, they could have had an invasion of balloons … er, brains … invading the SOL and capturing the crew.

Leaving open the possibility of a reunion show a few years down the line with ready-made villains.

And it will address a minor issue: Pearl’s John Agar Film Festival. They needed to do “Hand of Death” anyway.

Think about it, won’t you? Thank you.

Can’t believe nobody’s mentioned Zardoz yet!

I enjoyed Diabolik, however I feel that Plan 9 would have been the most appropriate film to go out on.

Me, I think they could’ve done this sort of flat, lifeless movie from the early ’80s called “Strange Invaders,” with Paul LeMat (American Graffitti) and Nancy Allen (1941).
Or maybe the “Blob” remake where the guy was pulled down the sink.
