Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Season 10 Host Segments

Well, sorry for the delay. I got called away suddenly. All is well now.

Again, I got my list down to seven:

• 1001- SOULTAKER: Joel’s completes repairs on the SOL, says hi to Frank, and departs with some uplifting words to M&TB; in Castle Forrester, Bobo and Frank hit it off.– Mike and Joel, together at last, the combination is terrific. A landmark segment.
• 1005- BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z: Mike becomes wedged in the bulkhead of Crow’s evil voiceover.–One of those segments that just comes from the pain of the movie. Hilarious.
• 1007- TRACK OF THE MOON BEAST: This week on Legends of Rock: The Band That Played “California Lady.”–Tbe Brains parody shows like “Behind the Music” and do a great job.
• 1008- FINAL JUSTICE: Having suffered through a really bad Joe Don Baker movie, Mike assumes it’s his turn to escape.–A great call back from five seasons before.
• 1009- HAMLET: Time once again to play “Alas Poor Who?”–In an episode disliked by many, a memorably witty segment.
• 1011- HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND: Mike is auditioning dancers, and Pearl, Brain Guy and Bobo try out.–Mary Jo is particularly funny in this great send up of a particular stupid moment in the movie.
• 1013- DIABOLIK: Mike, Crow and Servo, sharing a small apartment, settle in to watch a bad movie–our fond farewell. A very satisfying end.

Season 10 was a great season, I loved every episode with the exception of maybe Hamlet (which was just a horrendiously boring movie.)

The Soultaker episode was one of my favorites, it’s a shame that they didn’t get Joel to go into the theater to riff with Mike and the Bots.

But the fact that he was actually in an episode after departing the show, during their final season was gift enough.

Great choices, particularly the Dr. Z. voice over. Highly underrated.

In a similar vein, I love the Track of the Moonbeast segment where Crow plays the “mask” prank from the movie on Mike. Mike’s stoic reaction is hilarious set against Crow’s gradual breakdown:

“(Stammering) It’s just that we had the mask…”

It’s one of those skits that perfectly illustrates how inept the movie is.

    In no order:

Final Justice: Mike’s assumption that it’s his time to go. The engraved plaque quoting a Love Bug movie is a nice touch.

Boggy Creek II: The Legend of Bobo, the back and forth exchange of Pearl telling her made up legend and Mike and the Bots saying, “Bobo,” each time is good.

Blood Waters of Dr. Z: Crow’s voice-over as Mike polishes his shoes. It was weird in the movie and it was made weirder by Crow.

Girl in Gold Boots: Pearl begins her official duties as a member of the Institute of Mad Science. Her dialog exchange with Brain Guy is very funny.

It Lives By Night: The mustache face-off between Mike and Crow, with Servo getting in way over his head, all played to Pearl who is wearing some sort of hair removal cream on her own upper-lip.

Squirm: Mike Nelson nuking worms, and making a tasty snack of them.

Diabolik!: The ending with Mike, Tom, and Crow living together, again, settling in to watch the movie that the series started with, The Crawling Eye.

Side note. The Horrors of Spider Island is a bit wonky. I have always thought that some of the host segments should have been switched. The one where Mike auditions Pearl, Bobo, and Brain Guy should come first, then the plane crash segment, and finally the one where Mike gets caught in the web. These kinds of segments that reference the movie usually occur after we see each scene in the movie.

BCII: Brain Guys folk-redneck-like song about Bobo.
GiGB: Mikes parody of Critters pitiful lement, seeing Crow in genuine terror
Riblet: Crow and Tom’s alternate versions of Ham-melt (which I actually stole when my english class had to do a project on Hamlet. I had then in stitches. Don’t tell any one, SHH!)

The opening segment to ‘Horrors of Spider Island’ has one of my all-time favorite exchanges ever. “Is this more substantive, Mike? ‘Could there be more goose poop in my front yard?'” “No!” “No, it couldn’t be more substantive, or no, there couldn’t be more goose poop in my front yard?”

Mikey the Mike Sprite. Years later, and my friends and I were still saying, “No (insert thing here)!” And making the little noise.

I’m just going to go with a blanket “everything” for Diabolik, because it really is such a grand farewell to the series. But I have a special fondness for Tom disposing of his accumulated duplicate selves.

I’m apparently in the minority in loving ‘Hamlet’, and I especially love the three-card monty game they play to get the movie. (Complete with ‘Final Justice’ callback: “You think you can take me? Go ahead on. It’s your move.”)

Maltese men. Another classic example of MST3K “insane hatred for innocuous subject” humor.

Ernest Borgnine’s childrens’ books. “Oh dear God, they’re eating his liver!”

Crow seeking petty, childish revenge on Mike. This sketch is sheer unadulterated brilliance. “You know, Crow, I have to say that you have always been most beloved to me.”

(I’ll also give an Honorable Mention to the rain sketch, from that same episode. The cheesy love song lyrics are great, and the interjections just get funnier and funnier. “Mike, what we need you to do is to get out of that section of the ship!”)

    My 7 faves;
    1. Gypsy’s rage in Soultaker when the SOL malfunctions.
    2. Crow’s strip-tease from Girl in Gold Boots, and Mike’s horror when Crow’s bikini lands on him. “I think you’re having trouble acknowledging Crow as a sexual being.” “He’s not, he’s a robot!”
    3. Crow & Servo review each other in Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders.
    4. When Crow dresses as Droppy the Water Droplet in Future War. How Coily!
    5. Servo’s case of severe Southern Belleness in Squirm.
    6. I second Crow’s practical joke from Track of the Moon Beast.
    7. Crow’s report about Malta from FInal Justice.

I must plead insanity, but I didn’t like the “homecoming” segments from “Soultaker” much at all. It was neat to see Joel again, but it just seemed kind of forced. Frank, however, was hilarious as always.
When Mike and the bots settled in to watch “The Crawling Eye” in their apartment at the end of “Diabolik”, I stood up and cheered. What a GREAT!!! way to end the series and forever enshrine one of the funniest shows ever into the anals of history. Now, where did I put those Season 1 tapes…

    Hmmm…

-All of the segments from “Soultaker”, featuring Joel’s triumphant return and Frank’s less-than-triumphant one.
-Crow’s beer-pouring vengeance in “Girl in Gold Boots”. It’s always nice to see Mike occasionally outwit the ‘bots.
-Mike’s song amidst the burning SOL from “Girl in Gold Boots”.
-LSD vision from “Future War”. Brief but goofy.
-Rushing Halloween in “Track of the Moonbeast”. Almost as lame as the actual movie scene.
-Mike profiles The Band That Sang “California Lady” in “Track of the Moonbeast”. Love the gruff voice he uses.
-Mike’s chance to escape in “Final Justice”. Nice callback.
-All of the segments from “Diabolik”. Great full-circle moment at the very end.

    DANGER: DIABOLIK: 1013
The basement apartment. Very sad, as it was the end of the show, but a brilliantly perfect resolution

    HAMLET: 1009
3-card Monte — Poor guys, nothing ever works out for them!

    SOULTAKER: 1001
Joel and Frank’s appearance on the SoL — I can’t pick a particular bit.

    SQUIRM: 1012
Scarlett O’Servo — Servo always makes me laugh.

    FUTURE WAR: 1004
    “Narcotic Casserole”–Too bad they’re not touring :-)

MERLIN’S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS: 1003
Absolute power — Another Servo highlight.

TRACK OF THE MOON BEAST: 1007
Band that played ‘California Lady’ — Mike does a great job parodying this type of show.

#1 – Soultaker (1001): Joel’s triumphant return. Something about his reason for returning has always bothered me though. Joel says that he came to fix the SOL which Dr. F had set to malfunction after ten years, but the SOL had been drifting through space for centuries between 706 and 801. Wouldn’t the satellite have malfunctioned much much sooner? I know, I’m overthinking it. So maybe instead I’ll choose the sketch where Martin Van Buren appears. Crow’s delivery about Kinderhook, New York is hilarious. I also like when the door to the theater sticks at Movie Sign and Mike ends up running through part of the tunnel on the way to the vault. I always enjoyed whenever the broke the “rules” of the show.

#2 – Girl In Gold Boots (1002): Mike’s melancholy rain song. The lyrics are fun fluff, but it’s Crow and Servo appearing in the splitscreen that makes me laugh (particularly Servo’s anguished scream during a fade-out).

#3 – Merlin’s Shop Of Mystical Wonders (1003): When Pearl randomly picks Servo to be leader on the SOL, he immediately becomes corrupt. Quick scene cuts while characters are in mid-sentence just about always work for me.

#4 – Blood Waters Of Dr. Z (1005): Crow’s sinister voiceover. “And then… attack!” Crow’s delivery is everything here.

#5 – Final Justice (1008): Mike’s turn to escape, particularly when Servo asks him if he knows he’s sitting in the water heater. Also, Servo’s admission that they’ll never watch a really good Joe Don Baker movie.

#6 – Squirm (1012): Come to the fair! Ooh, Ape Hair, what’s that?

#7 – Diabolik (1013): The final segment, of course. I hated to see them go, but at least M&TB get a happy ending with a nice apartment and lots of rice. What really chokes me up is when Mike calls Castle Forrester for the last time and we see the set completely empty. Pearl admonishes Mike to move on, then pulls the plug on the communication equipment, causing the screen to flip off as it once did at the end of experiments back in Deep 13. It truly was the end and television hasn’t been the same since.

Southern Belle Servo is a good one. It’s always hilarious when Servo wears a dress. His Brownie get up in the opening sketch of the Boggy Creek II episode is good as well.

    Favorite Season Ten host segments:
Girl In Gold Boots: Mike sings like the guy in the movie while the ‘Bots deal with a catastrophic fire.
Track Of The Moon Beast: The documentary parody similar to VH1’s Behind The Music about the band that played California Lady. Mike’s pseudo-Levon Helm type narration is great.
Diabolik: The final segment, bringing the show full circle back to The Crawling Eye. Clever, funny final segment with a bit of pathos. Oh, how I still miss seeing new episodes of the show!

Now I think I’ll go pop an early episode of the show into my DVD player. Thanks again to Joel Hodgson and everyone who helped him create the show and keep it going, for the greatest comedy TV show ever!

Ah, the final season. Again, I’ve got a lot of memory block, but let’s see what I can remember…

    1. 1001 Soultaker – Well, of course! It was epic, the most anticipated reunion since the Beatles. Okay, it wasn’t that big, but it was still really fun and heartwarming to have Joel and Frank back, if even for a few host segments.
    2. 1002 The Girl in Gold Boots – Mike’s “I Am Sad” song and the ensuing fire. I love how the flashbacks are turned into Crow’s dire warnings of imminent doom, and the only thing that can pull Mike away is the promise of nachos.
    3. 1004 Future War – LSD experiments on the Bots. Any time they got in the Bots heads always ended up amusing.
    4. 1006 Boggy Creek II – As a long-time Girl Scout, I am impressed by the accuracy of the outfit, especially as they had stopped usint the beanies long before this episode aired. The “Shebelo” comment is great. And Mike in a Cub Scout uniform is oddly adorable.
    5. 1008 Final Justice – Mike assumes it’s his turn to escape because he saw a really bad Joe Don Baker movie. “Are you aware you’re sitting in the water heater?” Worth both a chuckle and an “awwww…”, especially after the Bots offer him some Swiss Miss in sympathy.
    6. 1012 Squirm! – Mikey the Mike Sprite. “Does Mike’s bed exist if Mike doesn’t exist? Do an easier one!” Short follow-ups were among the best segments for me, and the last one here was no exception.
    7. 1013 Diabolik – It wasn’t as epic as Laserblast, but as far as conclusions go, Mike, Crow, and Tom in a basement watching The Crawling Eye was a nice way to tie everything up and pay homage to where it started.

Ah, here we are at last. I’ve always been a huge fan of season 10, as I don’t think there’s a weak episode in the bunch, riffing or segment wise. All are just so glorious. So, here goes:

    1) 1001 – Soultaker – Segment 1: Martin Van Buren. All of the segments in this episode are fantastic. Heck, even if they weren’t we’d all just be glad to see Frank and Joel back again. But I always lose control of myself when A) The visage of President Van Buren appears and, moreso, B) the theater doors don’t work, and Mike is “chased” down the hallway. Fantastic stuff.

    2) 1002 – The Girl in Gold Boots: Segment 4: Mike’s Folk Song. Again, another episode with just hilarious sketches all around: who doesn’t love Crow as a “sexual creature” or Brain Guy’s erotic dance. But the best is Mike’s tepid little lyrical ditty that occurs while a raging torrent of horrors occurs elsewhere. The fact that the images appearing to Mike are of terrified puppet robots? Just grand.

    3) 1005 – Blood Waters of Dr. Z – Segment 2: Sargassum! Narrowly edging out the terrific nude read of Glengarry Glen Ross comes Crow’s diabolical attempt to … something Mike from within the rafters. “I love you…”

    4) 1007 – Track of the Moon Beast – Segment 2: The Prank. Coming off almost as well as it did in the dynamite movie, the mask and strange sound prank backfires on those poor ‘Bots. They swear, they won’t use the shots!

    5) 1008 – Final Justice – Segment 3: Goosio! There are many great moments in this episode: Mike’s delusional escape, Mike’s tripping! But nothing beats the classic response of the ‘Bots to their friendly visitor, and friend to Maltese children, Goosio. He must be killed.

    6) 1011 – Horrors of Spider Island – Segment 4: Crash. Of all the great sketches, this one sticks it to the movie the best. Take that, terrible shots of women in front of darkness!

    7) 1013 – Diabolik! – Segment 4 – To Earth! A landmark episode, of course – the final one. Some great stuff here, with Pearl and gang singing away and Tom blowing up the rest of him, but this song takes the cake. One of the best they’ve done. And they manage to throw Colin Firth in there! Good on them!

    Honorable Mentions
1007 – Track of the Moon Beast – Segment 3: California Lady. The Band that Played California Lady. Just an incredibly well-written bit of tripe, summing up all the terrible Behind the Music shows ever made.
1010 – It Lives By Night – Segment 4: Moustaches. I just love Crow and Servo in ‘staches…. I also love Mike’s Ted Baxter impression in the Mary Tyler Moore sketch. “Ah, come on, Lou!”

Least favorite? Are we not doing that anymore? Probably… geez, any of them from the Hamlet show. I love the opening and I love the riffing itself, but the sketches just fall flat for me. Sorry.

Well, Sampo, it’ll be fun to see what kind of task you set us next week! Writing up our favorite host segments from each season was a fun little way to spend a few minutes each weekend, so thanks, and yes, I am a huge, geeky dork.

Anyway! Season 10. Great stuff here, as always. My favorites:

    1. Everything, of course, from Episode 1001: Soultaker, especially the totally incongruent appearance of Martin Van Buren as well as Joel and Mike meeting for the first time. Joel won’t take Mike and Co back to Earth with him because “I don’t really want to” and somehow believes that being on the SOL will turn Mike into a man. I do love how the writers just made up half-baked yet still ridiculously funny excuses like this to cover the potentially gaping plot holes in their stories. Good stuff.

    2. Crow shaking his money-maker in 1002: Girl in Gold Boots. I enjoyed Mike’s introduction to this episode in which he mentions how pleased he was not to be the one gyrating around in little gold shorts and, with all due respect to Mike, I’m happy, too. His resulting horror and disgust at Crow and Servo’s expression of themselves as sexual beings is priceless. Mike has such body issues.

    3. Same episode, “I am sad.” I’m not sure what my favorite part of this sketch is: Tom and Crow’s hysteria over the fire destroying the SOL or the total inanity of Mike’s vibrato-laden song. I’m still trying to figure out how anyone’s eyes can be like wine – yes, wine! (Incidentally, how many times was the SOL set on fire during the Sci Fi years? Anyone know?)

    4. Speaking of the crew’s pyromania, Mike would very reasonably like to know why Crow and Tom are “yet again setting fire to the bridge” in 1006: Boggy Creek II. It doesn’t matter, though: the ‘bots soon get tired of playing “captive baby Boggy Creek creature and big smelly mountain man,” and skip off to play “wounded baby unicorn and skinny, socio-pathic janitor” instead, leaving Mike to clean up the mess. I guess if you’ve been stranded in space for as long as they have, you come up with some pretty weird games to play.

    5. Mike squats in the water heater thinking it’s his turn to go home in 1008: Final Justice. Poor, dumb Mike. “Come on back in, honey; we’ll make you some Swiss Miss.”

    6. “You think you can take me? Go ahead on. It’s your move.” from 1009: Hamlet. Naysayers, be damned, I love this episode. And this is a great way to start it off with Mike’s dead-on Joe Don Baker impression and his complete inability to choose an appropriate version of Hamlet to watch. Mike seems especially, sadly stupid this season. To repeat: poor, dumb Mike.

    7. The boys sitting in their basement apartment watching the Crawling Eye in 1013: Diabolik. Yes, I tear up a little when I watch this (again, I am a huge, geeky dork) but it was a lovely way to end the series. So long, fellas, and thanks for ten years of belly laughs.

  17. My list of favorites from Season 10:
#1001 Soultaker: The return of Joel and Frank. Need I say more?
#1004 Future War: Crow is Droppy, the Water Droplet
#1005 Blood Waters of Dr. Z: Crow’s re-creation of Dr. Z’s voiceover from the beginning of the movie
#1006 Boggy Creek II (And the Legend Continues): The Legend of Bobo
#1007 Track of the Moon Beast: Mike narrates the story of the Band that Played “California Lady” – very convincing imitation of the laid-back FM radio DJ’s of the 1970s
#1009 Hamlet: M&TB play “Alas, Poor Who?”
#1013 Diabolik: All the host segments, especially the song “To Earth” and the last one, where the SOL crash-lands and M&TB are watching “The Crawling Eye” on TV – great homage to the show’s legacy.

Wow, looks like I’ll be the first to mention “Ernest Borgnine’s Children’s Books” from 1003. I like most all the segments from this season and can’t really pick any others that haven’t been mentioned; on another note I really preferred 706 as a finale to 1013. Maybe because it left open some possibility that the show could return…(which is not to say I DISlike 1013, I just like 706 that much better) I did like the fact that Pearl’s own mean incompetence is to blame for bringing down the SOL and also for preventing Observer from doing anything about it.

Well, all the best bits seem to have been listed already (“Saddle Soap, cleaning compound of deceit!”) but I have to add:
    1001 – Soultaker Frank playing ring-toss with Bobo’s soul.
1009 – Kevin Murphy as Fortinbras, complaining that he was left out of this version of Hamlet.
1006 – Brain Guy’s “Legend of Forrester Swamp” song. A really long intro to a really short song.

  20. Diamond Joe says:

In the order they leap out at me from the list in the Episode Guide:

The Band That Played “California Lady” (1007): A combination of a lot of things the Brains do so well– an impersonation by Mike, spot-on observant parody, and obscure cultural reference (“Toots and the Maytals”!).

Petty, Childish Revenge (1002): An amusing scene recreation (“Don’t worry your pretty little head about it, Servo”) gets kicked up another level by having Mike, for once, think quick and get one up on the ‘Bots.

Eight Times a Lady (1004): Another “take pop lyrics to their logical/absurd conclusion” bit, augmented with cultural reference (“And Melissa Etheridge is… well, pretty low”) and teasing Mike (“I am no times a lady!”).

Servo the Despot (1002): Especially funny for people who remember the Zimbardo experiment from intro Psych. Very well played all around with Servo as dictator, Mike and Crow as dispirited subjects, and Bobo cheerful and bouncy from what turns out to be fire ants in his underwear.

Maltese Men (1008): Hilarious insults (“witless, tight-shirted walking clouds of B.O.”)

Mike’s Turn to Escape (1008): A fun parody of Joel’s departure. I doubt they’d have done such a direct reference to a five-year-old (and no longer broadcast) episode before impending cancelation freed them to ignore the possible new-audience-confusing consequences.

Worm Food (1012): I love almost everything about this one. Mike mumbling “Lights out. Uh-huh. Dance, dance, dance.” The long-term callback, “I’m making a rice of verms.” “You know, usually we encourage your little projects–” “–but this is grotesque… even for US!” And Crow’s assessment of the taste of charred worms (“Much better than FRESH worms.”)

I wish I could like the sketches in 1001 better, but I found Joel’s return disappointing in two ways: 1) Hodgson’s obvious discomfort at acting with another person and trying not to look to camera as he used to; 2) The oddly unemotional tone of it. Joel’s only concern about the ‘Bots after years out of contact with them is their mechanical functioning? What happened to the father/teacher we used to know?

Least favorite: Alas, Poor Who? (1009): A sketch with flop sweat all over it. Mike seems very uncomfortable and off his game (as it were), and all the cultural reference, divorced from any real connection to the subject of the sketch, for once comes off as obscurity for its own sake instead of an extra level of humor.

  21. MikeK says:

I must agree about the sketches in 1001. They really aren’t all that special, despite Joel’s return. And his selfish departure, obviously necessary since it was only the first episode of the season, will always seem strange to me.

I wonder what sort of sketches the writers could have done if they were doing their normal routine?

    1. Girl in Gold Boots – Mike’s folk song. When Servo loses it and just starts screaming as the shot fades out has me in stitches every time.
    2. Track of the Moon Beast- Crow rushing the Halloween season via the mask prank. I rush the halloween season EVERY SINGLE year.
    3. Blood Waters of Dr Z – SARGASM, the weed of deciet. Shoe polishing human…ATTACK!
    4 Final Justice – Goosio!
    5. Boggy Creek 2 – Bobo’s folk song & Crow dressing up like Crenshaw

Can’t really think of any specifics on least favorites. I’m not a real big fan of the Hamlet episode as a whole except when Servo riffs on the dancing in the film with “Night Fever.”

Well, many segments have already been mentioned, but I’ll add a couple:

1004 – Future War – Mike’s sincere thanks to Pearl for not killing them, and the fact that she aborts her current attempt to do just that, all because of Mike’s gratitude.

1005 – Blood Waters of Dr Z – fishing from the SOL, in increasingly Minnesotan accents. “Releasing” the fish after it’s gone through explosive decompression is a nice touch.

    1008 – Final Justice – “Mike’s Tripping!”

1009 – Hamlet – the final segment, including the Hamlet action figure, and Fortinbras showing up in Castle Forrester and demanding to play his role – wonderful stuff. And thank you, John Seavey (#5) and somebody (#7) for defending poor Hamlet!

1011 – The Horrors of Spider Island – M&tBs as languid, murmuring women. “Let’s augur this baby in!’

1013 – Diabolik – the song “To Earth” is a favorite around here – another great MST song.

Okay, that was more than a couple, but still…I think I’ll stop there.

This is my favorite season. And the only season where I’ve actually seen every episode!

    Mine:

    1. Band that Played California Lady from Moon Beast (The fact I live in New Mexico gets this episode a + anyway!)

    2. Diaboliks ending

    3. “I’m So Sad”-One of my favorite musical numbers next to Overdrawns!

    4. Crows Voiceover in Dr. Z

    5. Auditons in Spider Island

    6. Crow is NOT Mary Tyler Moore-It Lives by Night

    7. No Mike!-Squirm

    Runner ups:

    Gone fishin’-Dr. Z
    Mikes Morning-Moon Beast
    Ending to Future War
    Water Droplet-Future War
    Ending to Final Justice
    Opening card scene to Hamlet
Bogey Creek song by Brain Guy (Its BOBO!)
    Servo the ruler-Merlin
The beer pouring in Gold Boots
    To Earth in Diobolik
Thanks for not killing us-Future War

Aww what the heck I can probably name every one!

Matter of fact I don’t even know my top 7 lol!

    Ones I’m not fond of:

The nude scene in Dr. Z-I love this episode but that scene I always found disturbing

Though my favorite episode will probably forever be Space Mutiny!

Gee I really broke the rules for this season lol!

Ernest Borgnine’s children’s books was also a great host segment.

Frankly, I was a little disappointed in the guest appearance by Joel. I was really happy to see him on the show, but I didn’t feel that they made good comedic use of the opportunity. The lines he had on the show did not seem to show the best effort possible by the writers. Perhaps the interpersonal strain that caused him to leave the show in the first place also interfered with the guest appearance? Anyway, great to see him on his own show again, but I wish that they’d taken advantage of the full comedic potential available.

1.) Crow and Tom are “niche reviewers” from 1003, “Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders.” Like so many discussions between those two during the Sci Fi years, it gets heated.
2.) Crow’s voiceover from 1005, “Blood Waters of Dr. Z.” “Ah yes, my friend the squeegee. I love you.”
3.) M&tB’s flashbacks from 1006, “Boggy Creek II”
4.) 3 Card Monty and “Alas Poor…Who?” from 1009, “Hamlet.” I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who loves the “Alas Poor…Who?” sketch.
5.) Mike auditions dancers from 1011, “Horrors of Spider Island.”
6.) Mikey the Mike Sprite from 1012, “Squirm”
7.) All of the segments from 1013, “Diabolik.” The show did a terrific job of sending itself off. My particular favorites are the employee handbook and the Mads lining up new employment.

    Bob-
“Strained” and “missed opportunity” were exactly the words I was looking for. I think about the “Waffle Song” Joel compared to the “Soultaker” Joel and it’s almost like it’s a different person. Sadly, Joel lost some of his charm. However, having Frank appear as a soultaker was funny, it tied in with the movie, AND Frank seemed to be truly enjoying himself.

I don’t mean to digress, but it just seems like you either loved the reunion, or you hated it.

How can people not love Hamlet? It was one of my favorite eps! Sure it’s boring at face value but you gotta love the riffing on the Elizabethan language. “Aye! There’s the rub!” “I knew I had some rub left.” :D

“The Band that Played California Lady” for the win. I love the way Crow exclaims, “GOOD!!” in the soundcheck for some silly reason.

    Top 7, eh?
    1) “Saddle Soap. Cleaning compound of deceit.”
    2) Song, “I am Sad”.
    3) Tom blowing-up his other selves.
    4) Mike auditioning Pearl, Brain-guy and Bobo as dancers in Singapore. “Off, off Broadway…”.
    5) Mike tripping over and over and over to prove a point.
    6) SOL presents “The Band that Played “California Lady”. “The drinking, drug use, womanizing, tax fraud…”
    7) Mike and the the Bots thanking Pearl for not killing. “Movie Sign. Can I even trust that?”

Least favorite-The Bots’ musical version of Hamlet.

One of my favorite lines comes from “Horrors of Spider Island”. It is when the man in the movie is caught kissing one of the girls and Says “**** heat, I don’t know what I am doing”. Then Crow says “sure I was unfaithful but it was like 87 degrees out” I tell my son that he can’t go out if it is over 87 degrees because no one is trustworth then!

I became a Mistie watching the 10th season on SciFi, so I’m a very Johnny-come-lately! I didn’t know who Joel was or any of the references. It took years of diligent looking at all the tapes to get all the jokes!

Lesee… in retrospect the 10th season is my favorite next to the second season with Joel.

    Best 10th shows?

1001 – Return of Joel. Once I got it, it’s like Obi Wan meeting Anakin. Loved Gypsy talking trash at Joel.

1013 – Goodbye SOL. I think their farewell show was one of the best all time farewell shows. Plus the connection to the Crawling Eye, with Crow saying “Haven’t we seen this?” is classic.

1001) Soultaker: The Frank parts of the reunion. The Joel parts were misconceived and not having him in the theater with Mike & the Bots sucked.

1004) Future War: Pearl’s secret LSD tests on robots.

1005) Blood Waters of Dr. Z: Observer and Bobo help the Bots prove their theory of nude acting.

10007) Track of the Moonbeast: Tie between Crow rushing the Halloween season & Mike narrating the sage of The Band That Played California Lady

1009) Hamlet: Tom and Crow trying to be the ghost of Mike’s father.

1012) Squirm: Pearl torturing Observer with her Castle Forrester Fair attractions, from the windex-pickles to the poorly designed bungee jump.

1013) Diabolik: All the host segments are great in this one. I love the scene where Pearl, Bobo, and Observer discus their post-MST plans and the ending with the guys re-watching “The Crawling Eye”. Excellent ending.

Honorable mention: Observer’s Legend of Forrester Swamp song from “Boggy Creek II”.

Worst: the fishing sketch from “Blood Waters of Dr. Z”. A long walk to nowhere.
