The Episodes on Volume XIX Will Be…

The episodes that will be included in MST3K Volume XIX from Shout!Factory will be:
episode 107- ROBOT MONSTER (with shorts: COMMANDO CODY Parts 4 and 5)
episode 423- BRIDE OF THE MONSTER (with short: HIRED!, Part 1)
episode 818- DEVIL DOLL, and
episode 911- DEVIL FISH

Yes, it’s monsters and devils. Also, a special edition of this release will include a Gypsy figurine that will be in proportion to the Servo and Crow figurines. (Awesome.)
Info on a street date and other extras as soon as we get it.

  1. As usual, even though I have these all in broadcast quality I’ll buy it — no need to even think about it, with the Gypsy figure!

My own fave out of these is Devil Fish — can’t really understand why folks don’t think it’s a classic, but to each his own. I *just* watched Robot Monster so it will be out of the rotation for quite some time (I always go in episode order) but I’ll bet the set will be released before I get to 423 so I’m happy (I usually average one a week but things generally slow down in the summer when I’m busier).

You could have a boxed set of toilet paper and it would sell, if it include an action figure. Some of these fans will buy anything.

really great to have devil fish and devil doll…devil fish has great little things in it…interracial relationship? check
“hero” who basically only wears shorts? check….endless radar scenes with no real look at the “devil fish”? check!

actually…they probably made this film with absolutely no money…let’s make a jaws rip-off! i think the two basic scenes are in a lab…and on a boat…that’s it!

if i could have “track of the moonbeast” before boxset 25…i’d be a very happy indian with my stew –sam—

Awesome!!!! great line up, I was wondering when Bride of the Monster would come out. I thought Rhino would release it since they (at the time) had the rights to the Ed Wood movies on tape. Can “The Violent Years” be far behind?

I would love more MST3K figurines. my money got tight tight around volume 12 so since then I only bought the two box sets with the figures and plan to skrimp to get Gypsy. I would love someone to make MST3K (preferably mezco or neca) to make a full blown MST action figure line but I think the logical move for SF would be to move on to the human characters as busts, like those cool Muppet busts Sideshow Collectibles put out, but smaller for DVD packaging sakes. Also wouldn’t mind a mini-S.O.L. (probably what they WILL do next)

my wish list for DVD: 110 Robot Holocaust, 201 Rocketship XM, 210 King Dinosaur, 307 Daddy-O, 311 It Conquered the World, 313 Earth vs. The Spider, 403 City Limits, 405 Being From Another Planet, 416 Fire Maidens of Outer Space (with Timmy figure?), 418 Attack of the The Eye Creatures, 516 Alien From L.A. 523 Village of the Giants, 610 The Violent Years, 611 The Last of the Wild Horses, 624 Samson vs. The Vampire Women, anything from Season 7, 806 The Undead, 814 Riding With Death, 903 Puma Man, 913 Quest of the Delta Knights, 1013 Diabolik

You know what I think would make an interesting set?

Two Gamera episodes (I guess maybe Gamera VS Barugon featuring Season 3 as the main episode, and the KTMA version as a bonus, followed by Gamera VS Gaos with the same deal as Barugon), the Gorgo episode, and Godzilla VS the Sea Monster.

Of course, none of these films probably have no chance of seeing the light of day, but hey, I can imagine.

@110 – Believe Shout now owns the original unMSTied Gamera films (now also coming in restored editions), so there wouldn’t be another last-minute Gffllfl vs. Mflflff tieup…
As there is with Sony now owning “Sea Monster” in glorious cleaned-up edition.

They probly had to buy the rights to Commando Cody as a whole. Likely, we will be seeing more of them. I’m a fan of every season, and I’ve always enjoyed those shorts, so this is fine by me.
I’m also guessing that was the case with both General Hospital and Rocky Jones: Space Ranger.

Anywho, I’ve only ever seen episodes that have already been released to dvd, save for a few youtube clips of others. I am really excited for all of these, based off of their reputations and said youtube clips.

Future Figures I would like o see: Cambot(s), Torgo, Joel, Mike, Clayton/Pete Forrester, and TV’s Frank.

Lastly, With the exception of 8, 9, and the original 10, you shouldn’t have to spend more than 40

You’d definitely expect the release date to be something like October 31st, right? It seems pretty obvious to me.

Great to see ‘Devil Doll’ coming to DVD.

“I’ve got to have a look at that dummy!”

That will be my favorite from the set. Too bad they couldn’t get ‘Riding with Death’ out there first so people would understand the Robert Denby callbacks for William Sylvester.
I was lucky to have seen the Robert Denby original (RWD) and then ‘Devil Doll’ and then ‘Gorgo’, so as to get the full effect of the Robert Denby callbacks.

I also saw ‘Devil Doll’ before ‘The Projected Man’, allowing me to understand all the hilarious Bryant Haliday callbacks from TPM. (They still have a shot at doing that one in te right order). It really helps to see them in the proper order to get the full effect of all their callback riffs.

I just watched ‘Devil Fish’ last weekend. I love the host segments in it, some of their best ever. Good riffing too.

    @ #36, ” I just can’t spend the $60 on a set right now.”
Who spends $60 on these sets? Amazon generally always sells them at some point for between $39 and $42 just before release with free shipping on anything more than $25 and no sales tax. And there are other online discounters with free shipping as well. I realize this may be of little help to someone struggling for dollars right now, but there’s no need to scrounge $60 to get these sets.

Yes, they do own the rights, but Daei refuses to allow the Mst3k versions to be released because they don’t want their stupid flying, fire-breating turtle being mocked.

Gorgo might be a challenge since MGM owns the rights. I don’t know the details if Toho got a bug up their ass for what Mst3k did to the two Godzilla movies. I know Volume 10 got pulled in 2006 because of the release of Godzilla VS Megalon, but that’s only cause Rhino didn’t get authorization from Toho. I’m not sure if Toho would license their material if they just plan to release the two Godzilla films (Megalon being re-released in the future by them). Have they tried getting the rights from Toho yet?

It’s funny how in ye olden days they didn’t want the season 1 episodes aired any more, and now over half of season 1 is on DVD and you can watch a couple on netflix streaming, making them more accessible now than ever!

I think SF should work on releasing The Complete Host Segments Volume 1 (Joel era) and 2 (Mike), and they should get the Brains to do commentaries on ’em all.

I think Shout went after Season 1 to help with the 2 Joel 2 Mike episodes. I would have said fan interest as well but fans are just as interested in the KTMAs so I really just think it had to do with getting Joel 2 episodes per set. Obviously Season 3 is a bust which eliminates + or – 20 episodes of Joel. The lone exception is Castle of Fu Manchu & that one doesnt really get the *love*.
I doubt we will see Godzilla or Gamera on a set in the near future if ever.
Gorgo has a better chance but that isnt saying a whole lot.
Most of Season 1 is almost out on DVD anyway as far as what Shout can get. The last ones they can get the rights to I think are Project Moonbase & Slime People. Robot Holocaust would be cool if they can get that. The other shows 111,112,113 are all owned by Warner.
I can see Shout trying really hard to get the Season 2 Lipperts on DVD to keep the 2 Joel/Mike going. Rocket Attack USA and King Dinosaur should be the easiest from Season 2.

I’m sure Warner will license their material to Shout when it comes to the last 3 shows of Season 1. Actually, maybe all of season 1 might make it because I heard MGM is possibly going bankrupt soon.

Anyway, back to Warner, they DID at least license Catalina Caper to Rhino back in ’99… which IS one of their films, right? Correct me if I’m wrong…

And also, what exactly is the whole deal with the Roger Corman and Bert I. Gordon AIP films from Season 3 not being able to make it on DVD? Neither dirrectors got a bug up their ass for what Mst3k did to their films, did they? Or does MGM just not want the episodes to see the light of day? Please tell me, I’m very curious. I could use a HQ copy of Teenage Caveman.

  30. dsman71 says:

Because the AIP titles are owned by Lionsgate and Susan Hart. Susan is impossible to deal with from what I have read in the forums. I dont know if Lionsgate will or wont deal with Shout
Catalina Caper must have been a special case or some loophole that Rhino got the rights to. Maybe Warner didnt care ..or maybe Rhino went through the back door to get it as they did with Godzilla vs. Megalon
I sort of agree about Shout going to Warner to get the last 3 Season 1 titles. Getting a license from a major studio hasnt really happened for the MST3K titles. Maybe the fees are too high to license. It is really hard to say.
There is an MGM sale going on ..from what I heard they want something like 1.5 billion for their library. If MGM sells their library to Warner I can see more genre titles released as Warner does release them. MGM has been sitting on Incredible Melting Man , Quatermass etc for years and years.
This doesnt necessarily mean Warner will go “Oh sure” to Shout but I think there is some hope.
Except for Castle of Fu Manchu I would forget about Season 3. Maybe one day after Shout gets all the PD titles and independent movies out then we’ll see what they do.
Id love to see all the episodes come out on a set but as B Ward so up front said in the Shout Forums ” it just isn’t going to happen”

Lionsgate shouldn’t be a big deal, at least from my understanding. And who is this “Susan Hart” person I keep hearing about? Is there a page on Wikipedia about her?

I hope Shout can ceartainly get through Warner. If Warner assumingly at least licensed Catalina Caper… maybe there could be some possobillities on the last 3 Season 1 tittles.

  33. dsman71 says:

For Susan Hart you can go to any forum like AV Maniacs or Shout Factory DVD Drive In , etc
She is the widow of James H Nicholson. She owns part of the AIP the films from his estate such as It Conquered the World
Lionsgate owns another part of the estate which includes War of the Colossal Beast which is why that one wound up on DVD along with Earth vs the Spider, Viking Women and the Sea Serpent and so forth. They were half @ssed releases but at least Lionsgate did something with them. They own a few other classics like Fire Maidens of Outer Space, Tobor the Great (classics meaning old here)
The ones that Susan Hart owns are sort of being held in captivity (along with MGM movies)
Check out the Likelihood for Shout Factory Releases thread in the MST3K discussion board ..you will see the Season 3 titles and their chances..which for the most part is right on target

  34. Disco 3:16 says:

Just a note about the Warner titles: Rhino was owned by Time Warner, which is probably why they got Catalina Caper on their first set. In 2004, Warner Music Group (who retained the Rhino arm of the company) spun off of Time Warner, and so the WB Movie Catalogue was owned by a different company than Rhino (which is probably why they didn’t just release every WB movie they had). Shout Factory was started by former Rhino executives, but otherwise had no specific ties to the Warner Brothers catalogue, so the only real pull they would have in getting WB movies would be some people who used to work there knowing people who work there now (which is a double-edged sword as well). I’d imagine that the odds of Shout getting WB movies would be about the same as getting them from another big studio, maybe negligably better.

Well, assuming they could release all the episodes and they keep doing them like they’ve been, four a set, we’d be done around Volume Forty-Two or so…

  36. Alex says:

I’d imagine once Shout runs out of previously-unreleased Sci-Fi and Comedy Central episodes they can get the rights to, that’s when they’d start re-releasing SF and CC episodes originally from Rhino. I’d imagine the results would be “Volume 1.2” and “4.1” and 7.1″ etc, with newer bonus features and whatnot. I’d also kind of imagine that the Rhino volumes with Shorts specials would be excluded and would be replaced with an episode released as a single and the Shorts special would be included as a bonus instead.

I’d imagine if Shout re-released “Eegah!”, the mini poster would have Eegah behind his cave looking all pissed off. Crow would be on the left side, Servo on the right, and both look very frightened, and Eegah looks like he’s going to wack them with his club.

I just hope all of the previously Rhino-released episodes are still easy to obtain the rights to, though!

  37. Alex says:

Continuing with my last comment: The title “Eegah!” would be written in blood.

And back to Susan Hart, I’m assuming she’s the whole reason why The Amazing Colossal Man VHS got pulled back in 1996 when Rhino released it? Or did they just simply do some weird rights mix-up?

I still wonder whether a studio will make more off releasing an ‘original’ movie DVD or the MST3K-version DVD. I know there’s some audience for old cult movies but i don’t know if that is larger or smaller than the MST3K audience (which is admittedly small)!

Those figurines they put in as extras are okay, but it would be much cooler to have figurines of the movie characters. Can you imagine a Torgo figurine, or a Tor ‘Joseph Javorski’ Johnson? How ’bout a Griffin, Landis & Cook? or a Coily ‘the spring sprite’?

    It would be so awesome!

Think of all the great ones there could be – Just For this set alone you could have The Great Vorelli and Hugo, Tor Johnson, Bela Lugosi, the bubble machine-gorilla-monster-(whatever the hell he is), The old guy from ‘Hired!’, the electrician/beery guy, the skinny girl, etc.
I think they really missed the boat on this.
Somebody needs to get to work on these right away!

  43. Gorn Captain says:

Shout was somehow able to release the Movie Macabre version of “Gamera Super Monster” with Elvira’s turtle mockery intact. (Godzilla even makes a small cameo in the movie I’m sure Toho didn’t appreciate!) Maybe Daei doesn’t own this anymore?

Is Susan Hart holding out for a giant truckload of money or something? Even non MST versions of the films she owns seem MIA on DVD. The days of even the big studios releasing cult titles is starting to wane, so I hope she wakes up and smells the java eventually.

But now that I think of it, I know that both The Amazing Colossal Man and War of the Collossal Beast were released on DVD on their own, both one one disc btw. Idk if that disc is OOP now (this is what I’m talking about btw: http://blujay.com/?page=ad&adid=3290377&cat=12011300), but if not, I’m guessing the only reason why those two episodes have not (and may not) pop up on DVD is because Susan got a bug up her ass for what Mst3k did to those films. That’s just my theory.

As far as re-releases go I dont know about that having spent money already for all the volumes..I dont want to see double dipping here
However a case can be made for Dead Talk Back with a better transfer and Atomic Brain with the Stinger.
I know sooner or later Shout will be down to what travis calls Extremely Unlikely / Possible/Not likely
Some of the Rhino titles has both the MST & non versions such as Eegah, the Crawling Hand, Hellcats etc..
It really comes down to who want their films released in the MST3K format. And if the answer is no , more $$$ will be offered like the case of the Final Sacrifice and if the answer is still no..then forget it..which is probably true for AIP and Gamera for Season 3.
At least for the moment we have sets coming out and getting a lot of good titles such as this one right here…

  49. Alex says:

    Oh… crap that’s a bootleg copy? Gee, never would’ve guessed. :|

Anyway, I wouldn’t care if Shout decides to re-release any OOP Rhino volumes once they run out of CC and SF episodes that won’t get your hand slapped by the rights owners if you just lay a finger on the episodes (and hopefully those episodes are still easy to license), just as long as they’re upgraded with newer bonus features, contain the commercial sign logos that Rhino edited out when they released the VHS tapes then re-released as singles or as a volume, and of course, the mini posters ;). I’d still like to see the Shorts discs replaced with an episode like Eegah or Mitchell, and the shorts put as a bonus on the disc. I’ve always kind of wondered if any of the members of Shout doing something rediculous like dancing naked in their underwear for them would convince the rights owners for the Mst3k episodes to see the light of day. :P
