Mixed feelings. A few weeks ago, I was thinking that with Kevin’s musical talent, riffing a musical could be an interesting experiment.

On the other hand, I have to rent High School Musical.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I think that if a single guy my age were to rent High School Musical, he’d probably get put on a list of some kind.

First “The Boy in the Plastic Bubble” and now this? Sounds like the Rifftrax crew is picking better movies.

I wish they would get around to riffing David Lynch’s Dune.

  8. The original “High School Musical” is an extremely well done, entertaining film. The sequel was a throw-away money grab and I haven’t seen the theatrical “3”, but I can’t relly say anything bad about the first one. It’s a musical. If you *like* musicals, there’s no reason you wouldn’t like this one. If you *don’t* like musicals, there’s no way you *will* like this.

Not really prime riffing material, but that’s Rifftrax for you…seems they’ll do anything if they think it could sell…

(BTW, that’s not a knock. It just seems to be their business plan. They don’t choose movies purely for their “riffability”. They often choose movies that will grab the attention and, hopefully, dollars of their audience. Nothing wrong with that.)

Nnnnnno, it isn’t–It’s as anachronistically 80’s-sitcom-timewarped as any Disney Channel “Wizards of Waverly Place” episode that thinks modern life hasn’t moved on since “Silver Spoons”…Except that, oh, yeah, a couple of the characters sing in it.

But, this is of little consequence to RT, who believes that raving fans of anything must be pantsed in the locker room for their own good…Watch Kevin try to tie it into the Tolkien/Renfest Conspiracy.

I hate singing in movies. (Except for “Nightmare Before Christmas”.) That’s why I avoided those pain parades that were the High School Musical Trilogy. Like we’re supposed to belive these 20-somethings are really high school kids. Sure! You just keep telling yourself that!

    Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t agree (63% Fresh – critics, 77% – audience).

HSM is a simple, classic musical with a simple storyline and personal drama, wrapped in song. Not everything has to be gritty and reflect “modern life”. People don’t burst into song. Once you have your characters do that, you’ve thrown away “realism” forever. “Realistic” musicals suck.

HSM is a fine example of the musical format. I speak on this issue in more depth (where I indicate how surprised I was at liking it so much) here:

    http://www.thelogbook.com/365films/2006/11/09/old-school-at-heart-day-307-high-school-musical-2006/

Oh, and “Wizards of Waverly Place” is funny without being crude. Not everything has to be “Two and a Half Men”.

I was also pleasantly surprised by HSM. It was a solid, old-school style Hollywood musical, done on a (very) limited budget with surprising success.

I don’t know #16, Rotten Tomatoes does poll CRITICS’ reaction, so I think it is a fair point to make for a movie or show. That doesn’t mean I would want to ever see it though, don’t get me wrong(sorry RT).

#13 – Well I thought #5’s joke was funny. I love it when people try to cut down a joke they don’t like by getting all technical about it. Apparently refrigators can’t move on their own, so why would someone have to go and catch them?

Man, who knew everyone would get their panties in a bunch over HSM.

Yes, but on Disney Channel, everything has to be “The Facts of Life” and “Gimme a Break”–
We were trying to get rid of these shows when they were around during the Reagan Era, why foist them off onto younger kids who don’t know how bad their parents had it back then?

(It’s gotten so bad that after all the jokes about DC becoming “the All-Saved-By-the-Bell Channel”, the HSM teens have now taken to watching SBtB, and are now hooked on it, claiming it’s “cute and cool” as their own DC shows…Sarcasm just doesn’t WORK on some generations. :x )

Yes, because the pant load of reality shows that have been on for the past ten years are so much better than sitcoms of the 1980s. I’m so glad that they saved American from that wasteland of television.

#18: Thank you. It wasn’t a great joke, but I didn’t see it as anything to get all het up about.

Anyway, my nieces are fixated on High School Musical and whatever other bilge the Disney Channel sees fit to pump out, and it looks like #10 had the same thought I did: that whoever came up with this stuff originally had no sense of humor, and so had to use one that was found preserved in amber in a Costa Rican mine from the Mesozoic Era 1980s or 90s. Mind you, I used to watch Saved by the Bell and Full House when I was a kid, but now I realize how unspeakably awful those shows were. I was surprised to see that 20 years on, humor technology for “family” sitcoms hasn’t advanced appreciably in many areas. Maybe it’s the doom of the human race to be saddled with this crap on an endless cycle perpetuated by the fact that kids don’t have much discernment when it comes to comedy.

Incidentally, my nieces also watch Phineas & Ferb, which is also on the Disney Channel, and it seems to be pretty clever and amusing. There are usually a few gems among the dross.

#20 – Put it this way: After the end of the 80’s, we all breathed a sigh of relief, thinking we’d never again have to tell the younger generation what a “canned laughtrack” is…
Ironically, turns out we don’t have to–THEY ALREADY KNOW.

(And so do we: A canned laughtrack is something that spits in the face of the 21st century. And sings the Punky Brewster theme while doing it.)

I LOVE the HSM franchise- so cheesy!! I wish they would have done HSM 3 because they had a big budget and a theatrical run, yet it was still cheesy and hilarious! I always thought it would be a perfect fit for Rifftrax. I just never thought they would do a musical. Can’t wait to see what they come up with. GO WILDCATS!

So, is RT still allowed to call themselves “Mystery Science Theater 3000”, without arousing the trademark wrath of Best Brains or Shout Factory?
With anyone else, it’d be the obvious “It’s like X Meets Y!” adjective, but for MK&B, it can get into some questionable gray areas.

I’ve sat through some terrible, terrible tripe with these fellas. I rented twilight 1 and 2 (whatever the he’ll their names are) and I was uncomfortable doing that, even though it wasn’t public. ( by the way, to say the very least, those movies were actually very… pretty, if nothing else, and I can see myself getting wrapped up in them if I were 13). But I can’t do musicals. And I really can’t do Disney musicals that star teenagers expounding and waxing poetic about being teenagers in an effort to rake in the preteens who are just itching for their next fixation. So for the first time ever, I have to pass on mst3k product. Please, guys, don’t make me sit through the **** your daughters are watching on loop.

  36. Red Tape says:

I watched this Rifftrax with my niece, who is 13, so right in the target audience for the original movie. We both liked it. However, I grew up watching musicals, since my Mom is a big fan of them, so I actually don’t mind them that much.

As far as the Rifftrax itself – It was pretty much what I expected. There were the expected jokes about how girly Zac Efron looks. There was some singing – including a couple of the Disembaudio sync lines. Overall it was pretty good though. I’d give it an 8 out of 10.

I also found it quite fun. They had lots of riffs relating to other musicals. I love Broadway so that was great! They really rip into the drama teacher. Such a badly written and performed role. Overall a very enjoyable romp, but not up there with my faves- Top Gun, Star Wars and Star Trek ones.

EricJ: Both Cinematic Titanic and RiffTrax use the MST3K name freely, and in very similar ways. Nothing has come of it, so one assumes they’ve gotten any necessary permissions.
