  1. Ah — well the interviewer is terrible, and there’s not much we haven’t heard before, but it’s always nice to see some of the gang.

I thought one interesting comment was Joel thought CT wouldn’t have done well if MST3K hadn’t gone before (because they were “themselves” as opposed to characters riffing). I’m not so sure that’s true.

It was an okay interview, to me. Always nice to hear from Joel and Trace (and Trace and Joel, too).

I can see what Joel is saying about being accepted as themselves because of MST3K. I think he is exactly right. I think just doing the riffing as themselves in the CT manner wouldn’t have worked as well. They are able to do that, as well as the Rifftrax gang, because of the popularity and greatness of MST3K. Would people have watched a show like CT back in the 1990s? I think it would’ve been harder to win people over. MST3K had skits and songs and personalities that made the show more attractive to viewers.

I don’t think all of the Cinematic Titanic & Rifftrax groups would’ve had as much success if MST3K didn’t happen and their current presentations might not have worked out as well. Not anyone can go out and do the riffing. These two groups have cornered the market on riffing movies.

Would any of us who frequent this site and the CT and Rifftrax site, or anyone else who enjoys that type of humor, for that matter, accept anyone else doing this? Is there anyone whom enjoys this kind of humor who ISN’T an MST3K, Cinematic Titanic and/or Rifftrax fan? Perhaps we are our own little society. Who would be able to mount up a production like CT or Rifftrax and be successful at it?

One begot the others. This couldn’t have happened in any other way, to my way of thinking.

  4. Ralph,

No biggie (since it can’t be proved) but I think you’re wrong. I’m not so sure Joel and Co. could have done what they are doing now back in the day, but if MST3K hadn’t happened I still think people have gotten pretty hip about pop culture critique, and their present act would play very well without any preamble.

While those of us here tend to think MST3K is hugely important, we forget that for about 80% of the general population it’s never even been on their radar. Indeed, I believe it was the Rifftrax people themselves who said that their audience is mostly people who have never seen MST3K before. If that’s true then it’s proof that MST3K did not have to blaze the way for CT or RT.

The world itself has just gotten very very hip. MST3K may be just a very tiny part of that process.
