Every single episode is absolutely welcomed into my DVD collection, so I’m not complaining one bit. I love them all!

Not what I would’ve thought for a 20th anniversary but it will do…since any episode on DVD is better than not..
How can you not have any key episodes except Laserblast ?
These are good episodes, but for a 20th Anniversary..hmm..
I really was expecting something more mind blowing..something more appropriate for a 20th anniversary, unless throughout the year the will have a key episode

The “Future War” crew are cool, and totally get this! I hope they make a bundle.

Yay! This is great for me, since I’ve never seen the last three. And First Spaceship on Venus is one I’ve always wanted to see in a DVD release.

    Plus, a CROW FIGURE!?!?

First Spaceship On Venus is one of the worst episodes in the series. I believe in the episode guide they all but admit it unto themselves. The other three are top notch, though.

I would have preferred a more even distribution along the show’s timeline (only one Joel episode?) but I realize ya gotta go with what you can get the rights to. And a few of these are among my favorites, so I’m definitely not complaining.

    Meh.

I’ll buy this set of course, but, meh.

I have always felt a little bit of a bond to 211, my VHS tape of it broke sometime around ’95 and I had to tape it back together to get it to play. Scotch tape works wonders…

Only Laserblast sounds appropriate for a 20th Anniversary set, but I suppose it will have to do. Any new MST3K on DVD is fine with me, but I hope next time we get more Joel and especially season 3.

First Spaceship is lackluster & they MST3K crew said it was a crap episode, furthermore it was low on the Rhino Poll..
The other 3 I think were higher up on that poll…gee this set reminds me of a Rhino set LOL
I think its the supplements that will make this set
I cant believe that theres no Crawling Eye or some episode that was key other than Laserblast…
I am happy about this set, but somewhat underwhelmed over the episodes..
Thank god for the Crow figure

How can you not call Werewolf a key episode?

    It’s absolutely fascinating.

Werewolf is a popular episode, and its a good one, but not key like a Frank leaving, or a Joel leaving or something key..
That shoutfactory “whoops” was a cover up, they knew the word leaked about Werewolf..

Well, let’s think about this. Most of the really good episodes have been released already:

    Mitchell: Joel leaves.
The Brain That Would Die: Mike arrives.
Manos the Hands of Fate: What’s there to say?
    Red Zone Cuba: See previous.

I, personally, would replace 211 with 201, which is big as it introduces Kevin and Frank, and it’s where the show really began to rock. “By this time my lungs were aching for air.”

But these are all very good selections, and hopefully we’ll learn more as time carries on.

I personally am thrilled with all 4 of those choices. To me, a nice somewhat random selection is always a good thing. Pick a few that people request, and throw in a couple that are COMPLETELY unexpected (ie 211)…. THAT to me is the best way to go.

If they stuck only to the most requested, they’d run out soon, and then the people requesting them wouldn’t buy any more of the other sets. Ya gotta spread it out, like butter on a baby’s butt.

Really…poor Josh indeed, makes me wonder if anything else from Season 1 will ever come out in addition to Season 3. This would have been the set that something from Season 1 would have made sense from a historical standpoint

  22. crowschmo says:

Hey, it’s only their first release, with hopefully, many more to follow. Time enough to get other episodes. Remember, there’ll be lots of good extras. And a Crow figurine!! I want that Servo one that Kevin had in the pictures, too. Maybe the next one? Will there be a Gypsy? (What the heck does the rest of her look like?)

  24. Bob says:

All good episodes, although I feel they should have at least split evenly between Joel and Mike episodes for such a momentous 20th anniversary set, after all, Joel created the show, the puppets, etc.

Nevertheless, these are some fine choices. First Spaceship On Venus is an absolute favorite episode around our house. All the space exploration movies they did were goofy fun and favorites for us. Werewolf and Future War are two of the better Sci-Fi era episodes. Laserblast was a surprisingly strong episode considering the recent upheavals in cast and known cancellation of the show at the time. I will definitely be buying this set.

And the extras will (presumably) be limited to the “History Of” featurette, the Comic-Con Panel and a Crow figure.

Wow … I think I may have just saved myself a lot of money.

the selections have much more to do with the cost of the rights than of the “keyness” i would think. just watched 211 this week and i agree its a big so what, but very, very excited for the others, especially Laserblast “Are you ready for some foooootball?”

I think people who are stoked over the scifi episodes really havent seen or appreciate the Joel era…he made the show..why did they choose a crappy Joel episode to represent the 20th Anniversary set ??
I would have switched 211 for 201 (unless its part of a Lippert set)
Werewolf and Future War Id have waited for the next release – something that didnt say 20th Anniversary on it. It just seems inappropriate to me, as much as Im glad to see these to get the DVD treatment
It just doesnt seem right…all that hype and I get a SIGH from all of this..

  29. Eric says:

It sounds like there’s some confusion on what “20th anniversary set” means. I always assumed it meant only that it happens to be the 20th anniversary, so they’ll release whatever four DVDs they were going to release anyway and call it an “anniversary set.” And it sounds like that’s what they’ve done. Did they ever give us any reason to assume it would be something more momentous than that?

Whee. Coolness. And as I eventually want EVERY EPISODE EVER released (well, post-KTMA, anyway — those have historical value but face it, they seriously did not have their riffing mojo going yet), I don’t care what comes out in what box, when, as long as they ultimately all come out.

  31. happy says:

What do you expect for people to think for an Anniversary set ? A set of 4 generic episodes ? 4 crappy episodes ?
    DUH !!
You want something that exemplifies why the anniversary is there, you show what made the show, you show the key episodes that helped get it to the 20th Anniversary

  32. Edge says:

Given their unwillingness to release the KTMA episodes, they had only 12 Josh episodes to choose from.

And with all all due respect to Josh: “I hate Tom Servo’s Old Voice!!!!” ;-)

It’s a good assortment. I would have liked to have seen one of the Russo-Finnish movies, myself, but I can take this group with no complaints.

  37. Edge says:

OK ‘happy’ (#31) as someone else said, then they should release Manos, Mitchel, Pod People and Laserblast as those are some of the best and most significant episodes.

Otherwise, you can’t make everybody happy, as opinions vary as what makes a great MST3K episode and even if we all agreed, they probably wouldn’t be able to get the rights for all the top episodes.

Ok “edge” maybe you don’t get it..
Manos & Pod People are GREAT episodes but not KEY..thats the different
Mitchell is a Big time key episode, but it was already released..
This has nothing to do with what is a good or great episode, but more to do with an appropriate title for an Anniversary set…
Even the MST discussion board members arent too thrilled, at least some of them. You cant please everyone, that is true..I think these eps would be a great on a non anniversary set..

  40. happy says:

I think you mean KTMA Tarpo :)
About First Spaceship…even in the colossal movie guide that show is so crapped on by the cast, why this was selected for this set is perplexing..
The best part of all this is there are going to be more releases more frequently and we will all get what we want in the long run (hopefully!!)

If you read through the latest CT email, you’d have learned that there will be special 20th Anniversary documentary footage and interviews with everyone and that the Comic-Con panel is being filmed for inclusion too.

  42. S.Mc. says:

Interesting: according to the breakdown made by the guy in Ward E about the likelihood of each episode…
    Werewolf & Future War: “Extremely-Likely”
    Laserblast: “Likely”
    First Spaceship on Venus: “Possible/Not-Likely”
That could bode well for other movies in the less-likely categories (depending on the reasons, of course). “The Crawling Eye” and “Rocketship XM” are both in that possible/not-likely category, so maybe those of us that want to see watershed episodes on DVD may be able to get that wish granted!

I basically agree with most people. Pretty good, but not great. Feels a bit lopsided with 1 Joel and 3 Mikes. Laserblast is a lock and Werewolf was good. Future War never really stood out for me. First Spaceship on Venus is nice but again not really a stand out.
