Werewolf is easily one of the top 15-20 episodes of the entire series.

Laserblast? Oh poopie, there goes my dream of a Complete Season 7 Box Set. Not that SF was likely to get the rights to half that season anytime soon anyway.

Had that particular complaint been made yet?

Well, maybe their second set will be the complete Russo-Finnish quartet?

While I was kinda hoping #101 would be in the set for the Alpha/Omega effect, the lack of Season 1 eps on DVD is mostly due to rights problems with Radar Men From the Moon, as opposed to any continuing ban by the Brains, right?

  3. outerspace says:

Theres a huge problem with doing themed box sets.

What theme could a movie like Final Sacrifice possibly fit in other than season nine episode theme?

    @202

Radar Men from the Moon is in the public domain, so that’s not an issue.

  5. happy says:

yup, a lot of hype over this anniversary set and we get 4 random episodes. At least Laserblast was a key one. 101, 1001 would have been better choices given the set, but oh well, no one claimed SF were geniuses either

I was going by that “Likelyhood for release by Rhino” thread, which says it’s not certain if Hal Roach Studios or Lion’s Gate owns the rights. Has someone else done a more recent list that says it’s PD? I’d think Commando Cody is old enough, but it’s not as old as Phantom Creeps, is it?

And I wasn’t suggesting that all or even a significant fraction of future 4-packs be themed, just that there were exactly 4 Russo-Finnish epics whose rights might just all become available around the same time if they’re not PD already, so why not release them together? I doubt there’s any potential customers who dislike them all so much that they’d refuse to buy that particular set.

  7. John Seavey says:

I would point out, BTW, for the people complaining about a heavy Sci-Fi emphasis, that if you actually run the numbers, the Sci-Fi era isn’t represented any heavier than any other season. Yes, they did do a couple of sets (4 and 5) that were Sci-Fi only, but the first three sets and all of the single releases had no Sci-Fi episodes, Set Six had no Mike at all, and the sets after that have been balanced pretty evenly. There doesn’t seem to be much of a bias anywhere in particular (Season Three seems a bit underrepresented, but that stems in part from the fact that they dipped heavily into Sandy Frank’s ouvre that year.)

Really, all the seasons are a bit thin–no season has even half its output officially released yet. Personally, I’m enough of a fan of the whole series in all its forms that I just want more in general. Eventually, I want every single episode, so apart from a few personal preferences (Zombie Nightmare, Pumaman, Bride of the Monster, Day the Earth Froze), it doesn’t matter what order they come in, as long as they keep ’em coming.

I will cherish this set. And hopefully the next set will be:

    Bride of the Monster
    Santa Claus
    Pumaman

Judging by Kevin’s comments in the ACEG about First Spaceship…, I think he disliked the host segments… and most of them are pretty bad, to be honest. I do like that Klack sketch though, has some really funny freeze-frames.

    @ Dr Batch #200

I know I’ve seen it, most likely millions of times, and as soon as I sit to watch it I’ll emit a long “Ohhhhh yeah!” I just can’t for the life of me remember what goes on in that movie or even the host segments.

I’m tempted to look it up or watch my **cough** bootleg, but I decided to give myself something more to look forward to with this set.

    # 207 : Set 6 had no Mike & no SciFi as Sets 4 & 5 were all Mike and Scifi, I guess Rhino had just gotten the rights and licensing for them
    # 209 – the crew loathed show 211 they went on a vacation after it. its not a great episode, but I do like the “Million Pounds of Doodie” riff that Joel says. Its a good one when you are in the mood for a color scifi movie on a low budget. Its not a very popular episode. This just leaves 6 Season 2 episodes to go, 1 of which is Godzilla vs the Sea Monster and is untouchable..

  12. Cornjob says:

I think an underlying issue here is that in order for more box sets to be produced and more money generated to get the rights to what most of consider to be the “better” episodes, each one of these fairly expensive box sets has to sell pretty well. That’s why I think episode choice is so critical because I doubt that there are too many completist fans who will buy any episode simply because it’s become available. I, like many other fans, have a lot of the DVDs and also boxes full of eps on VHS. The Rhino sets, especially up to 11 had 3 or even 4 exceptional shows and I was excited to get them. Most of the eps on the final Rhino and this new set, are, well, shows that I haven’t felt the urge to watch again since the time I taped them and threw them into the box. So I won’t be getting either any time soon. I hope Shout will be able to put together stronger sets in favor of whatever they can get the rights to to meet a release schedule (not that I’m saying they did that…). Maybe they can look at delivery options for some of the less great eps – I might pay 9.99 for a single no frills disc of “First Spaceship on Venus.”

Okay, is this officially the most responded to thread here now? This shows that there is still an audience for it. I’m just glad that no one has complained that Joel and Jim should have gotten the reunion show going(though I’m sure that someone will after this).

Anyone think there will be a 20th anniversary set Volume 2 in 2009 ?

  19. Just watched Future War again on YouTube. Utterly worthless. Drink-coaster material. I did find myself laughing occasionally over how utterly pathetic it was. And it was nice to notice the Forry Ackerman cameo. And Mike+bots gave it a go, but the few really good lines were about how breathtakingly lame the movie was.

“This is a case where the parents *should* have crushed the child’s dream to become a filmmaker”

“My theory is, the director filmed this movie without actually ever looking at it.”

And check out the comments at YouTube, too. Clearly, SF should have given this one a pass, public domain or not.

Man… there really is no pleasing a lot of you… I am happy to have “any” episode added to my collection that I don’t already have. PERIOD… Do some of you actually think Shout wanted to disappoint anyone?… They busted their asses to make the best set they could within the time they had… And it is apparent that they payed very close attention to the fans and did what they could which I agree with some of you as a very nice set. Unless those of you who are wining want to apply to shout factory or do what you can to help them acquire the rights to the episodes you want… Then you should probably calm down an be happy with what you get (I promise you they did their best)or just sit and pout and refuse to buy the damn thing… It’s funny because most of the complainers will end up buying the set anyways…

  21. Hey, I’m just riffing on Shout Factories inclusion of Future Wart on the “20th Aniiversary” set. I see nothing wrong with that, particularly because I *am* buying it. I’m entitled.

Well, MST3K is celebrating its 20th anniversery. This makes me feel OLDER than dirt. Enjoyed this show for years and hopefully for many more to come. Not too worried about the episodes released. Haven’t seen 3 of the episodes – only Future War. So hate to be a FANBOY, but for now I’m satisfied.

To be honest, I’m a little disappointed in most of these choices, seeing as how this is the much anticipated ‘MST3K 20th Anniversary’ release. With the exception of “Laserblast'(a fitting end to the series on Comedy Central), I don’t remember these episodes, though I know many fans consider ‘Werewolf’ a great choice.
Okay, I’ll give you those two as good picks. BUT…there are far better Joel choices and while I’m on my soapbox, WHY only one Joel to three Mike episodes (considering this special 20th Ann. release). It should have been two of each of the shows hosts. After all, without Joel, the show would never have even existed and they both hosted close to the same number of shows.
Just doesn’t seem right at all.

Well, I believe there were at least 3 other Canadian films riffed (any slightly more rabid fans with confirmation?) so they could do a Back Bacon Box…

  33. Rotten as British Teeth says:

Thinking more about this, I am willing to chalking this up as a “getting the kinks out” on Shout Factory’s part. I will get the box set, simply for the strength of “Laserblast”, “Werewolf”, and the fact that “First Spaceship to Venus” was considered an unlikely candidate to attain rights to. Who knows, perhaps that little bit of info about “Venus” may be an underlying hint that SF is willing to spend the extra money on getting so-called “doubtful/highly doubtful” movies.

Or, it could be me just being over-optimistic! Like I said before, SF’s second release will be a more telling indication of how serious they want to please MSTies.

the only other Canadian film i can think of is Zombie Nightmare. I think Pod People may be too, but that train has sailed. Doubt they’ll ever do a themed set like all Gamera or all RussoFinnish and I hope they don’t. Though 4 70’s would be sweet..

  35. fishbulb says:

As for themed sets, it may not be doable, but how about “Master Ninja”, “Master Ninja II”, “Riding with Death”, and “San Francisco International”? The all-failed-TV-series set.

Mainly just to be a part of this super long comment list, I’ll add my two cents. It is twenty years later and someone actually is taking the chance to put MST3K out on dvd. I’ll see if I can get some family to chip in and get it for Christmas.

we expected something that would be a good representative of our favorites show’s 20 yr history, not 3 random probably easy to get episodes..1 Joel episode on top of that…Again its not really whining, people are saying that this isnt really a 20th Anniversary Set per se..good shows, yes to most, but not what one would expect from the hyped to death 20th Ann. Set. I think its safe to say many of thought and figured Crawling Eye was a lock since its the first ever ep in CC, and this set seemed to be right time to release it. It will be a good set with the episodes, however some us feel the 20th Anniversary Set is mis-represented here. If saying we what think & feel = whining then so be it ..boo-hoo…
I pre-ordered this long before the eps were even announced just like I do with all the sets. Its not so much the eps , moreso the words “20th Anniversary Set”. A lot of us expected better. Its all written in above comments. This set was overhyped for sure…
I love this show, and im glad eps are being released on DVD, but please don’t mis-represent box sets..(imagine an MST3K set called The Gamera Collection with one Gamera movie, Gorgo, Colossus and the Headhunters and Moon Zero Two – a good set – maybe/maybe not, a Gamera set, not really )

I thought Shout Factory was the one that created all this hype that the set ultimately didn’t live up to? Calling the set a 20th anniversary edition and waiting until a 20th anniversary reunion to announce the contents instead of just issuing an internet press release far earlier like Rhino used to made the set seem like a bigger deal than it actually turned out to be.

Myself and others assumed from the manufactured hype that more than just one series landmark episode would be included even if they weren’t all that funny like episode 101.

#217: What would they call that hypothetical set? Why, “From Russia With The Satellite of Love”, of course!

OK, the Iraq war tangent was fun, now I’m gonna’ hijack this thread in the interest of any toy collectors on the board:
Did they say if the Crow figure is articulated, or just a statuette? How much you wanna’ bet we’ll see this repainted into Timmy for a set that includes “Fire Maidens of Outer Space”? Will they do figs of human characters as well, or just bots? They could get a heckuva lotta repaints/remolds out of a Mike fig (Eddie and Mirror-Mirror-Mike for starters). I’d love a Frank fig, but there’s already a G.I.Joe called Road Pig that bears an uncanny resemblance…
