Leslie Nielsen, RIP
FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. — Leslie Nielsen, the handsome leading man of the 1950s who, in the 1980s and ’90s discovered a new career as a comic actor, died of complications from pneumonia Sunday, Nov. 28, at a hospital near his home here. I grew up watching his movies and TV! I miss him! So, the next time someone offers me a cigarette, I’ll just say: “I know.”
I’ve not seen ANY of the Airplane! or his other movies (that I can recall) less “Creepshow”. To me he seemed completely malevolent. And effective.
My first memory of Nielson was about 1971 as a 6 year-old watching my then-favorite actor Don Knotts in ‘The Reluctant Astronaut’, one of a handful of Don Knotts movies that I loved along with The Ghost & Mr Chicken (my favorite), The Incredible Mr Limpet, The Shakiest Gun in the West, and The Love God.
As usual back then, Nielson was the straight man, an astronaut.
So growing up having seen him in all his straight normal roles added to his genius when he finally began doing the comedy roles of Airplane, The Naked Gun, and Police Squad.
Another of my favorite Leslie Nielson movies was ‘Wrongfully Accused’, a spoof of mainly ‘The Fugitive’, along with other movies.
To this day I chuckle to myself when I enter a door that says ‘Men’s Room’, thinking about when Nielson was in the bait shop and answering the guy’s questions by reading everything he saw around him on the walls.
“I am serious and don’t call me Shirley.”
Rest in peace, Leslie. We will ‘Shirley’ be missing you a lot!
