@ #10 “don’t hold your breath for any of those first nine episodes from Season 8”

Well I now have a glimmer of hope for the Universal movies. Shout Factory has an in with Universal now. SF has been the one that has been releasing Universal-owned TV shows that Universal started releasing and then stopped for whatever reasons. For instance SF released Dragnet 1968, 1969, and 1970 after Universal only released Dragnet 1967. Same goes for Simon and Simon and seasons of Adam 12 and I believe Emergency as well. So there is a foot in the Universal door with these.

Plus Universal might realize that they’ve probably tapped the dollar for Revenge of the Creature, Mole People, Deadly Mantis, and Leech Woman by already giving them their own releases in box sets from quite a while ago. I don’t know how much more they could expect to make from that market without going all out in super-duper special editions for all of those in addition to releasing The Thing That Couldn’t Die in the first place. Maybe this would mean being able to get San Francisco International and other Universal stuff and TV movies.

I still have foolish hopes that Shout Factory might even be able to convince Roger Corman yet too. Their Roger Corman Cult Classics line has been rather well done so far with bonus features aplenty for the most part all paying tribute to Roger left and right. Why not make an extra dollar or two now that you’ve got accolades coming fast and furious on new Deathrace 2000 and Rock N Roll High School DVDs, Mr. Corman? So who knows? We never thought MST’s Gamera would be making its way into official DVD release and that’s almost out now. Shout Factory seemingly has connections that we only dreamed of previously.

I already own those episodes from Rhino, so it makes no sense for me to buy them again.

Just for the record: I actually L-O-V-E Hamlet. That is the only version of that ghastly annoying play I will watch.

Gunslinger was not great. I think it was the next to last one before Joel left. Having read about why he REALLY left, it does make sense, because back then my mind couldn’t process the reasons he was giving.

I need to get BEGINNING OF THE END since I never got the Rhino single disc for it. The thing that I always love about HAMLET is hearing Ricardo Montalban as a member of the English dubbing cast. I kept expecting him to suddenly break out with a, “Welcome to Fantasy Island”.

Good job Shout Factory! It makes perfect sense to release these alone, because if Gunslinger or Hamlet had been put in a set, it would have been a wasted spot. I’m serious, I think releasing all these singly is a very well-thought out move.

I would much rather that a extraordinary episode be used in a boxed set.

I think Tiscwslab & Beginning of the End could have been set worthy, but ‘Tisc’ was already in a set and the ‘Beginning’ has been released for a long time on video, so it made sense not to waste a spot on an upcoming set just the same.

Now that clears the way for the next great set, which I would suggest to be:

Riding with Death, Track of the Moon Beast, Last of the Wild Horses, and Teenage Crimewave…..and make it a 5 movie set and throw in The Painted Hills (Lassie)….or if you want to go all Mike, make it The Incredible Melting Man, Danger Deathray, or The Horror of Party Beach.

Oh that still leaves SO many good candidates. Diabolik, Squirm, Village of the Giants, Time of the Apes, Operation Double 007, Space Children, Neptune Men, Deadly Mantis, Mole People, Girls Town, The Violent Years, Rocketship X-M, The Day the Earth Froze, San Fran Int’l, It Conquered the World, Jungle Goddess…These are all episodes that should have long been out on DVD by now, and there’s still many more good ones.

Were not getting any younger, you know. Shout Factory, you’ve got to provide product for your fan base while we, the market, still exist.
That goes for you too, Cinematic Titanic.

And come on, is it really that hard to get rights to ‘Night of the Lepus’ at this point?

OK slightly off topic, but does anyone have any scoop on if Shout’s volume XX will be showing it’s cute little face on Netflix any time soon? I checked the message boards and I haven’t seen anything about it at all. Seems like they usually show up on Netflix within a month or so after release…

No, I didn’t buy it, so would love to be able to watch it on Instant (but I did pre-order Gamera so I’m not completely lame).

Yeah, and what about Killdozer? It’s been mentioned so many times on MST3K that CT, or even Rifftrax, has to riff the movie.

Laura – I agree with you. I love the MST version of Hamlet. If you want to see the ultimate Hamlet, I would suggest the 70mm Hamlet by Kenneth Brannah. It is the ENTIRE play – no cuts.

I would NOT recommend Branagh’s Hamlet. Granted, it looks beautiful, but there’s a very good reason every other film adaptation (and many stage productions) edit the hell out of the play. I genuinely like Hamlet – dreary and dour as it is – but not 4 hours worth of it.

I’d recommend Zeffirelli’s film from 1990 (starring Mel Gibson, of all people) as a much more easily digestible version, although it goes a little heavy on the Freudian overtones, which I don’t think were ever Shakespeare’s intention. And, of course, there’s Laurence Olivier’s classic from the ’50s. I still have to check out the recent BBC production with David Tennant and Patrick Stewart…

And avoid the gimmicky film starring Ethan Hawke at all costs. Ugh.

@ #21 I agree. The shorts volume 3 needs to be reissued. Any subsequent shorts volumes will be a welcome addition to my collection.

Hamlet, really? In my opinion the worst MST episode ever.

Wouldn’t mind having Beginning of the End though, since my tape is wearing out.

If you can get past the dreary visuals of Hamlet – the riffs are hysterical. Case in point: Polonius goes to hide in what looks like confessional with a curtain in front of it. He closes it just as Ophelia kneels down to pray. Crow riffs: “Pray for me while I shower.” LOL
