BRENTWOOD, CALIF.--Actor Carl Esmond, who escaped Nazi Germany to find success in America, died at his home here Dec. 4 of natural causes. He was 96. MSTies will recall his performance as Professor Janos Steffanic in episode 815- AGENT FOR H.A.R.M.

Born Willy Eichberger in Vienna, he studied at the city's State Academy of Dramatic Art and already had a successful career in German films in the 1930s.

But as Hitler's power grew in his homeland, he fled to England and arrived in Hollywood in 1938. After changing his name he found work in many notable films, beginning with "The Dawn Patrol" and continuing with "Sergeant York" "The Prisoner of Zenda," "Ministry of Fear" and more.

In the 1950s and '60s he began getting television roles as well, often playing sinister foreigners on series including "77 Sunset Strip," "Maverick," "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "McMillan and Wife" and "The Big Valley." He retired from acting in the 1980s.
