Weekend Discussion Thread: Animated Versions of MSTed Movies

Alert reader Patricia muses:

I know you’ve had a discussion about which movies would be good remakes, and I know that when there was a discussion about the MST movie being remade, Canucklehead actually mentioned Pixar remaking it as an animated movie.

But what if the Pixar/Dreamworks form of 3-D animation was used to remake, oh, Manos: The Hands of Fate, or Gamera vs. Guiron? Would the movies be more watchable? How would that serve a movie like Hobgoblins or Pod People? Imagine what the animators could do with the scene of Tor chasing the kids in Beast of Yucca Flats? And just think how the outhouse scene in Boggy Creek II could come alive!

All I know is, if I were very, very rich, I’d fund one of the studios to turn Wild Wild World of Batwoman into an animated romp. Fun!

So which MSTed movie would you like so see in an animated version? What would it be like?

I think “Teenagers from Outer Space” is a good candidate. The gargon could look like anything!

What’s your pick?

Giant Spider Invasion, done in early 90s GI Joe animation. It’d be amazing.

making ‘Beast of Yucca Flats’ into one of those trippy ’70s movies where a little acid goes a long way might not help make it completely comprehensible, but it would definitely look cool. maybe add a little wocka- wocka bimg bang while Tor’s struttin’ through the desert like the ‘Doo Dah Man.’

…OR…’I Accuse My Parents’ done up ‘Heavy Metal’ style. young Jimmy gets sucked through the vortex of hell, is transformed into massively bulky ‘Jim’eee the barbarian.’ he meets bar singer Kitty, who has a more pronounced figure and very little clothing, they fall in love and after 2 gratuitous sex scenes are split up when Overlord Blake swoops in and kidnaps her. Jim’eee is left for dead by Blakes thugs but is soon revived by burger flipping spirit walker Al. our hero rides off, slays the villain and gets the girl. Movie ends with Jimmy waking up in class as he’s being called on to read his world saving essay about his home life.

As a usual practice, I loathe 3-d. Tried the “new techniques” with Avatar but got a headache before it was over (I wear glasses- it’s still a pain using them with 3-d—but for a Mysty movie remake it could be fun and I’d make an exception. The Creeping Terror would be interesting (although you’d tend to fall asleep waiting for the people to crawl into the Terror). Thrill as the guitar playing folksinger swings his instrument (the guitar- you prevert. The Coca-Cola Company will hear about that!) right at the screen. Gasp as the screen erupts in violence and blood in the dramatic ballroom fight scene. Wonder as Steve McQueen and the Blob battle the Terror…oh wait, that’s still a preproduction spec.

I don’t know where to start, but maybe Mighty Jack! Although the GI Joe cartoons are pretty much the same thing.

Oops. ran out of time before I got to the animated portion of the Terror 3-d remake. To be brief, I see it like the Cars movies, with the terror rather adorable and misunderstood. But the people in the movie, including Doctor handsome (the scientist), still being irredeemably stupid.

Coming up next on Toonami, Japan’s favorite harem anime, The Violent Years! And then, Colman Fracigara’s magnum opus Red Zone Okinawa. And then some reruns of Scooby Doo.

I’m definitely not what you would call an anime fan, but an anime version of Final Sacrifice seems just about right.

I was thinking that Jack Frost and/or The Sword and the Dragon would’ve benefited from being Disney-style animated movies as opposed to live action. They weren’t all that bad (dubbing aside), but the stories were too larger than life for a live action movie to portray properly.

Well, if we broaden it to include both MSTed and Rifftrax-ed movies, animated versions of “Bride of the Monster” and “Plan 9” would mean we’d only have one Bela Lugosi instead of, respectively, two (one real, one in platform shoes) and three (real, chiropractor and one other).

And animated versions of the “Fugitive Alien” “movies” might turn out OK, with improved spaceship effects and bigger stuntwork for the Wolf Raiders.

And, echoing Criswell (#12), and differing with AngryBanjo (#13), I’d prefer Rankin-Bass Animagic versions of the Russo-Finnish fantasy movies and “Jack Frost”. Those would naturally lend themselves to that approach.

A CGI motion-capture version of “Hamlet”. Maximilian Schell reprises his role as Hamlet. In post-production, black mustaches will be added on to everyone. The whole film will be completely black, save for objects and characters.

An animated version of “Incredibly Strange Creatures…” would be interesting. Although i hope nowhere near as headache inducing as the original.

Oh hey, and what if Dreamworks did a full length CGI feature starring……. COILY THE SPRING SPRITE?!

  23. ‘I Accuse My Parents’ done in the style of an early 1970s Filmation cartoon. Of course everyone in that movie and in Filmation cartoons are so stiff and awkward that no one would notice the difference.

Amazing Colossal Man as made by Pixar. There is a cool story there if you strip away Glenn’s depressing monologues.

Earth vs the Spider. Again, good idea, and how cool would the giant spider look animated?

Black Scorpion. Imagine all the scorpions fighting! But the annoying kid has to go. (I’ll take care of dem!)

I like the idea of Teenagers from Outer Space being animated, not only could the Gargon be anything, the ‘teenagers’ could be teenagers this time!

    But

re: #2 – ‘Beast of Yucca Flats’ into one of those trippy ’70s movies where a little acid goes a long way.

Hmm, now I’m imagining Yucca Flats as a 70s movie by Cheech and Chong at their height (no pun intend … ah, who am I kidding). It may not make the movie comprehensible, but it might actually make it interesting. Cheech and Chong, enough weed to keep ’em going, and a CGI Tor Johnson. I think we can make it work.

My first thought is “Overdrawn at the Memory Bank” in Dreamworks/Pixar style. Except that the inside the computer scenes would be anime and, obviously, the computers would need to be updated to be realistic.

I think an animated Future War may be a little more dramatic. The special effects would certainly be better, but I don’t think Robert Z’Dar’s chin would have the same impact.

I’m thinking Mole People with cool purple underground color schemes, Cool aquas and blues for the Royal court, and golden hues for the above-ground ruins and mountains. Plus a more nerdy John Agar with glasses, bulked-up Hugh Beaumont, and a really obese LaFarge who gets eaten by the Mole men. Plus, although I don’t want to tinker with the plot too much, make the archaeology team much bigger so it starts out as a 12-member team and all die except for Agar and Beaumont. And a girl for Beaumont, too. And Adele doesn’t die at the end. Could include a spectacular earthquake/lava/explosion scene at the end in slo-mo of the Sharu dynasty finally getting its come-uppance.

Hmmm. I believe Santa Claus would be an excellent candidate for CGI enhancement. The movie has the feel of a long, goofy short anyway, so why not? That giant ear and the weird mouth thing and the crazy laughing reindeer might seem less creepy if they were animated.

“Escape 2000” in 1930’s-style B&W animation, with mice as the Bronx resisters and cats as EvilCo’s minions.

A Syncro-Vox version of “The Creeping Terror” couldn’t help but be an improvement.
