Weekend Discussion Thread: Fave Season 2 Host Segments

Sorry this is a bit late this morning: I’m a little under the weather.

Pick your top three host segments of season two, and give us a little explanation as to why.

Mine, in no particular order, are:

From episode 204- CATALINA CAPER: Joel vapor-locks as he remembers the ’60s.
I think it helps to be a certain age to appreciate this one. I’m almost the same age as Joel (a couple of years older) and this is a very funny take on that time period.

From episode 210- KING DINOSAUR: Crow asks “Am I qualified?” Wonderful wonderful writing a Trace just knocks it out of the park.

From episode 213- GODZILLA VS. THE SEA MONSTER: Song: “The Godzilla Genealogy Bop.” There are a lot of songs in season two, but this one is my favorite.

Honorable mention:
From episode 212- GODZILLA VS. MEGALON: Dysfunctional popcorn commercial. This isn’t as funny as it used to be, as the Reddenbacher family have faded from view, but it makes up for that by being incredibly prescient.

Oh and, a new feature: WORST host segment:
From episode 203- JUNGLE GODDESS: The “Bela’s OK Discoveries” infomercial. Infomercials were new then, but had already been parodied to death and there’s really nothing new in this. A total flop.

Those are mine. What are yours?

How dare I forget the Jet Jaguar translation song!

“He crotch it made of steel!”

One of my top 10 series-wide host segments!

212: Godzilla vs Megalon, arguing over whose monster is cooler — I sometimes can’t breathe from laughing during this, particularly the poem with the line from Frost.

    My fav three are
If shauffuers ruled the world from 206 ring of terror

Wild rebels Cereal from 207 Wild Rebels

Probably Creepy girl from 204 Catilina Caper
I guess i have a thing for the songs

My least favorite is definatly the Popcorn skecth from Godzill vs Megalon. The skit makes absolutly no sense. They could have done so much better

Maybe the best season ever for host segments, so it’s a tough choice, but here’s my favorites…

    1. 212 : Popcorn sketch – This one’s hands down my favorite host segment of the entire series. Takes the common commercial that SNL, and others, have done to death, and takes it off the rails with an inspired bit of lunacy. I’ve yet to come across anything funnier on TV than the end of that stetch.

    2. 208 : Hugh Beaumont visits the SOL – A sentimental favorite. This was the first ep I ever really watched, and this stetch, more than anything else, was responsible for turning me into a fan. Takes completely obvious joke fodder – that Hugh was the dad on ‘Leave it to Beaver’ and turns it into an incredibly sureal and original bit of comedy.

    3. 212 : Rex Dart, Eskimo Spy – Sure it makes no sense, but that just adds to the charm. As Joel said, the right people will get it.

    Honorable Mention:
    213 – Godzilla Geneology Bop
    207 – Intellectual Bikers
    206 – The OLD School

I’d have to go with “Godzilla Genealogy Bop” – the quality of host segments is pretty consistent during this season.

(By the way, do you think the people who keep mentioning Sci-Fi episodes really don’t know that the show ran for 7 years before that, or are they just being obstinate?)

Oops, I need two more – Joel’s ’60s rant (I can totally identify – I was about the same age as Joel, and lived only a few miles from Woodstock), and the JC and Gooch segment from Sidehackers

For sure, Orville Popcorn and Rex Dart, Eskimo Spy, head and shoulders above all else.

I’d have to say “Reddenbacher” tops the list. Nothing beats Crow screaming “I’m the god!!” “The Old School” from Ring of Terror always cracked me up, too.

Really…. “Godzilla vs. Megalon” is an all around outstanding episode and arguably the first “perfect” episode in the show’s run, the movie is ludicrous and the host segments are all spot-on.

Megalon’s popcorn commercial. Sorry to be unoriginal, but that was hands down the best season 2 ep.

OK, i worked my list down to 8, and lunch is almost over, so here goes.

tied for 1st : Klack, Creepy Girl and My White Goddess. each has a hit-the-nail-on-the-head quality that transcends humor. Klack should be preserved as a Cultural Artefact ( Skin Mittens ! ). Creepy Girl gets big points because KM sings so beautifully. MWG maybe just the strength of the theme song, everything else is gravy.

tied for 4th : Old School, The Sixties, Only Love. A little more raw than the first 3, but inspired non-the-less. Only Love… because JR doesn’t sing as well as KM.

Honorable mentions : Funny Not Funny Floating & Rex Dart. There is one line were JR sells the funny floating lecture… yes, EXTREMELY funny. And I believe that Rex Dart Eskimo Spy may the funniest phrase ever constructed by humans, but did they do enough with it ? naaaaa.

ok, back to work. crunch crunch crunch

To poster # 14: Captain Cab.
The riff is “NBC (not ABC) Mystery Movie” and it refers to the opening of the show. This was a revolving wheel of 3 to 4 different TV series (‘McCloud’, ‘Columbo’, etc.) and in the opening, they had on screen someone in the dark with a flashlight waving it around while the theme music (probably played on a synthesizer) was played during which they flashed on screen which series was on that night. I hope that helps.

It’s tough to name a favorite of season 2 host segments. Most of that season is very good.
I guess the first segment with Frank and the “missing” Dr. Earhart from ‘Rocketship X-M’.
Least favorite? Probably Frank’s Tupperware Party from ‘Catalina Caper’ (not a favorite episode either).

I think Glad2haveGila was actually responding to a question by poster # 15. It was NBC…. here’s the opening in question:

    My fav from season 2:

Wild Rebels: The Wild Rebels Cereal commercial! How hilarious was that?! “Eat it, or you’re a wimp.” LOLOLOLOLOL.

The Sidehackers: The sidehackin’ song. I love most of the songs on MST.

Catalina Caper: This is one of my least fav episodes, but I love Tom’s ‘Creepy Girl’ song! It was so funny!

Rocketship X-M. What’s your dream? Where do you want to be in two years? Joel and the Bots sit around trading quotes, Tom stumps everyone with a line from season one’s Crawling Hand “Dames like this always got beer around” and then Mike shows up in drag (another season one reference).
Plus Joel’s reading of the line “You’ll never get any satisfaction out of me… God she’s ugly.”

A big thanks to Glad2haveGila and forkliftkiller for answering my question. :)

On another note, just watched the new 10.2 skit. Joel and the gang and it was wonderful. Frank and Trace’s timing was as good as ever. Was also great hearing Trace voice Crow again (Frank was fine as sort of a Weinstein’esque Tom) and loved seeing Joel back in his parental role trying to prevent the bots from bootlegging the Godzilla DVD. “Hey, Tom. I’ll see you later, wink wink.” haha

Where is this 10.2 skit located?
