Weekend Discussion Thread: “Funny All By Itself” Movie Moments

Alert reader Joe writes (and by the way, keep those suggestions coming!):

On the “Overdrawn at the Memory Bank” topic, someone mentioned how unintentionally hilarious the line “Mom, my nuts?” was by itself.
I’d like to suggest a topic regarding unintentionally amusing lines in MSTed movies that didn’t require any “enhancement” from Mike/Joel and the Bots.
Example: The line “Get outta here YOU DISGUSTING WORRMMMMMM!!!!” from “Outlaw” was HYSTERICAL and it only got stunned giggles from the riffers. The line alone was funny enough.

A lot of these became stingers, of course.

I’d say one of the classics is the inexplicably rage-filled shop keeper from episode 702- THE BRUTE MAN. “Creeper! Creeper! Creeper! YOU give me the creeps!”

What’s your pick?

Of course from wairwolf … that’s absolutely fascinating … is in a class by itself.

followed by the man-girly howl from our hero Dave Ryder (which happens to be my uncle’s and cousin’s name) …

‘I hope he said peanuts!’ Touch of Satan, retort when old man was bragging about his hard cider and what secret ingredient he puts in it. Yes, a bit obscure but I always say this when my girlfriend says peanuts, we both get a chuckle out of it.

I find a lot of the movements/actions by the giant monsters (Godzilla, Gamera, etc) to be hilarious on their own. They’re just so goofy.

Squirm- “Now You Gon’ Be Da WORMFACE!”

The “dancing” guy who looks like he might actually be having a seizure in “The Creeping Terror”.

The enormous Amazonian woman who tosses her partner around like a ragdoll AND the possibly retarded photographer in “Skydivers”.

The liturgical dance sequence in “The Mole People”.

Torgo awkwardly fondling the heroine, The wives “smearing” Torgo to death and any scene where Torgo has to walk in “Manos”.

The line, “Plenty of lip and tongue action” in the “Speech” short.

    Trumpy. Just Trumpy.

Warwilf is defintely one of the all-time best.

EVERYTHING in Manos might qualify for this, except for the fact that it’s more the idea of how bad it is that’s funny than it is to actually sit through it.

I also agree with the previous poster who mentioned Trumpy; especially with “evil Trumpy,” much of the material in Pod People that’s meant to be scary is actually very amusing, riffing or not. While I’ve never seen it without riffing and therefore can’t be sure, I always imagined that though it is enhanced by riffing, I could easily have got a non-riff-inspired laugh out of the scene where they “move [the girl’s] spine around alot.”

  17. Iggy Pop's Brother Steve Pop says:

That endless, agonizing, yet unintentionally hilarious opening scene of “Track of the Moon Beast.” The whole point of the dialogue is that Paul reacted strongly to the prank, and the other actors behave as though Paul did (rather than treating the lines ironically), and yet the actor playing Paul showed all the intense emotion of a slab of concrete. I can see why the Brains dedicated a host segment to playing up the contrast.

The canvas skull from “The Brain that Wouldn’t Die” also pops to mind, but maybe that’s because I just rewatched it the other day.

I agree with #2, “Get your tickets here!” is classic. Another one that stands out on its own is from Boggy Creek 2 –
    “I saw the little creature!”
    …..yes, I bet you did.

Space Mutiny: ANY of the “action”/floor polishing scenes.
Cave Dwellers: The exposition — have you actually listened to that tripe? It’s hilarious!

Plus, I can’t help thinking of a scene from “East Meets Watts” — back when it was called “Dynamite Brothers”, and the Titans did a show in Boston.

There’s a scene with a small man and a very large desk and chair set. No riffs, just an entire audience, and performers, laughing at the absurdity of it.

From Deathstalker – Troxartis. Just Troxartis. He’s such a ham that he only has to sashay into a scene and open his mouth for the comedy to begin.

Another one from Space Mutiny – the oh-so-80s dance club, complete with half-hearted dancing, hula hoops, spandex in every shade of the neon rainbow, and of course Leah showing off her butt at every opportunity

The first appearance of Pumaman. When I saw that ridiculous costume, I almost died laughing. And when Pumaman started flying, I was doubled over.

The absurd monsters from Horror of Party Beach are worth mentioning as well. Who the hell thought of stuffing hot dogs in their mouths?

    Oh, so many:
Cave Dwellers: the hang glider first sails into view.

Bride of the Monster: every appearance of Tor Johnson but particularly the first, where it honestly looks like he’s waiting for Ed Wood to tell him when he put his arms down. (“Close your mouth, Tor, you’ll drown!”)

Warrior of The Lost World: Megaweapon! Megaweapon! Megaweapon! Also any time the Paper Chase Guy gets really whiny, e.g. “Why are we wearing these clothes?”

I Accuse My Parents: When Kitty first invites Jimmy over and the first thing he starts talking about, without prompting, is his frickin’ parents.

The Brain That Wouldn’t Die: The extremely unconvincing motor accident.

Invasion U.S.A.: When we find out that exactly two men are guarding the Capitol near the end of the movie.

The Sinister Urge: When we first see Dirk hiding behind a tree waiting to knife Mary Smith in the park. He looks like an idiot, not a murderer, with that Big Boy hairdo and a goofy grin.

Escape 2000: A few pistol shots cause a helicopter to explode.

Prince of Space: The hero and the scientists get very temporarily trapped near the end of the movie–“caught like rats in a trap!”–and the ungrateful babies all gather round the Prince and glare at him with these, “You didn’t bring me home a Hershey bar like you promised Daddy!” looks.

Space Mutiny: Lea takes her wide-legged stance in the middle of a corridor and grins like a moron, firing wild shots as Kalgan runs his floor waxer over her.

Pumaman: CAN YOU HEAR HIM VADINHO CAN YOU HEAR HIM! WWAAAAAGGGH!

The Final Sacrifice: Every single “Rowsdower?”

Future War: The shirt “ripping” incident.

The MST Meetup group in Chicago recently watched “Girl In Gold Boots.” It was the largest group we’ve ever had, and when Critter breaks out his guitar and sings a mournful song in the rain, you could barely hear him or the riffing for the laughter, especially when an image of Michelle was superimposed on the right side of the screen.

I think Michael D. has it nailed. Pumaman’s erratic flight pattern and flailing limbs probably made me laugh harder than any riff. Laughing now just thinking about it.

Gloria on the Sinister Urge. Them outfits are amzingly bad, even for the era in which Ed Wood made this turd. Looking at Arch Hall Jr. makes me laugh every time. The Eye Creatures are pretty funny. I like how some are in full body suits. Hearing Bela Lagosis’ voice and even Tor Johnson saying things like “Time to for Bed.” Hercules and any other foreign films dubbing. Torgo big knees. The possiblities are endless!!!!!!
