Well, I laughed my grass off.
My first quick impressions: I watched the “3 riffer” DVD over the weekend, and I would estimate there were about 60 to 65 percent new riffs. Some gems from the previous version remained but it was mixed in with a LOT of new stuff. There was also a higher total riff count.
My theater (in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Pa. area) was about three-quarters full and people seemed to really be having a great time.
The sound (in my theater anyway) of the first short itself was a little quiet, but still audible, though the riffing was nice and clear. All the levels were good starting with the second short.
The Lowtax videos were fun and very cute. The premovie stuff on the screen had people really laughing. If I think of more stuff I’ll post later.
I was laughing so hard at the second short, I was having trouble breathing!
Can anyone post the list of the 10 winners of the Riff contest?
I din’t realize that the movie had been colorized. But why the people in charge chose such awful colors for the guys suits is beyond me. And why they felt they had to gift the reefer smoke colors like pink and purpls.
I saw it in Coral Springs, FL. The theater was by no means full, but we had a good time. The cut to the clay dolls in the Grass short damn near killed me–like Bookworm, I couldn’t breathe for a few minutes. Bill in the headdress just topped it off perfectly. The movie itself was a lot of fun, although there were a few conspicuous silent patches.
My only complaints: the Lowtax shorts seemed like a waste of time (cute as they were); I would’ve preferred Jonathan Coulton again. Also, the Grass short isn’t the freebie. :sad: I’ll have to download it when they put it up.
Well, I’m off to wash my clothes in gasoline!

Surprisingly large turnout in Chattanooga, TN….It was great…needed sodium…but it rocked!
Just got back, overall a fun show.There wasn’t any one single moment that was the highlight of the night (like the “Rudolph, I need you” line from the Christmas show), but it was consistantly funny. The grass short was probably the funniest thing of the night, it got the best reactions of anything. No one in the theater, myself included, so much as chuckled at the Lowtax shorts. Honestly, they might have been cute, but they were jarringly unfunny and really out of place. Thankfully they were really short and there’s only two of them. Guys, if you’re mining the internet for filler for your shows, might I suggest 5 Second Films?
And according to my biologist friend who went to the movie with me, corn is grass!

i was almost late to the party. I had to bathe the little guy (9 months) before the babysitter got there and i’m drying him off and lotioning him up… he pees on me.
I thought about just going like that… but i did change. i should have just sprinkled some gasoline on my pants.

The bizarre dry-cleaning with gasoline short had people chuckling. The bizarre 1930s animated short had us guffawing. And the make-things-with-grass film?
Howling. The entire theater.
By the time “Reefer Madness” finally came on, the audience was warmed up. And it was the first time I’d ever seen any version of this film. The entire audience seemed to enjoy it. Solid riffs all around, very few duds, tons of belly-laughs.
The only thing nobody laughed at: The weird little girl cartoons.
Nice turn out here in Manhattan, at the Union Square theater. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. As usual, the pre-show trivia was a hit. The shorts were great fun, but there seemed to be an audio problem. We could hear the riffing very well, but the first short in particular (which was hilarious, btw) was very quiet. The Lowtax stuff was cute, and worth a chuckle, but the show doesn’t need it. Reefer Madness is a deadly slow movie, but the guys managed it admirably. The dig on John Hodgeman was priceless!
Looking forward to Halloween and House on Haunted Hill for the 28th!! :cool:
A decent turn out at the KCMO Barrywoods theater. There was even a guy in a kilt!
Loved the shorts. The gasoline short with the woman and her fake flames was awesome. The other two were funny and just plain weird. The animated ones were alright, but I was glad they were short.
Happy the guys got right down to brass tacks, no host or music act.
I am looking forward to the Halloween show. :grin:
PS- @Doug (#6) PLEASE no Jonathon Coulton again. I’ll take these mostly unfunny shorts over him any day!! Also, the guy in the headdress after the grass short was Kevin. ;-)
Respectable, but not massive, turnout at Tysons Corner in N. Va. The “fake” movie trivia was hilarious, and the shorts were gold. I was also really pleased with how many new riffs there were in the feature, and agree with those who called it consistently funny. Nothing stands out in particular as the best because there was so much! The worst, by FAR, was the only thing un-riffed: the Lowtax shorts. I think there were a few sympathy chuckles, but it was mostly “WTF?”
The event was particularly delightful for me because I’m a younger mst3k fan, and although I was introduced to the show when I was about 9 and it was still on Comedy Central, I’ve never seen a live show or attended any mst3k-ish event before. I’ll definitely be at the October Rifftrax!
After all this time I still can’t quite judge whether Reefer Madness was meant seriously or not. I have read that the infamous piano scene (Faster! Faster!) is a parody of a scene from the musical 42nd Street, which I have not watched. And surely the film-makers must have realized that they were putting the bulk of the anti-marijuana messages in the mouth of one of the most repulsive-looking characters I’ve ever seen in movies. I swear there isn’t one shot of Dr. Carroll where he doesn’t look like he’s about to sink his bared teeth into the person nearest him.
Lowtax’s shorts would be more tolerable if they were shorter. He doesn’t ever seem to realize that his gags aren’t good for more than about fifteen or twenty seconds.
Decent turn out in Livonia, MI, and everyone was having a great time. Lots of out-loud laughing. The shorts were great and Lowtax’s stuff was well received. I agree with Sampo that there were still a pretty high number of old riffs, but the new stuff was great. They did scroll the names of the riff winners in the credits, but it ran by VERY fast. I didn’t hear any of mine anyway.

In Nashville, TN the theater was about half full but every one had a good time. As we were leaving, I overheard someone say, “My sides hurt”.
I had a blast! The riffs were outstanding! There was a much larger crowd than the last outing. I throughly enjoyed all the shorts. Who knew gasoline was so dangerous? I liked how the show got started quickly. I want riffs and I want them now. Thank you Kevin, Mike and Bill I had a super evening and I am looking forward to the 28th of October Show.
In an Oaks, PA theater where I watched it, there was a very small crowd. But the crowd itself were loud with laughter, so it was still a great experience.
Now, I enjoyed the Christmas shorts movie a great deal, but there weren’t any of those shorts that I bought once they became available. This time, I HAVE to buy that “grass” short. I cannot remember laughing harder at a short since Hired Part 2. It of course helps that the short itself is so unintentionally funny, but I loved and laughed at this short so much that my sides ached.
To echo most of the sentiments here, I didn’t find the Lowtax “shorts” funny or charming or entertaining in the slightest. But since somethingawful.com is so great, I will give it a pass.
Overall, an awesome show was had by all and I can’t wait for October (although I kinda wish they were riffing on the newer House On Haunted Hill).
Not too great a turn out in Columbia SC, but when the laughs came they were loud and proud. Love the Rifftrax guys and can’t wait for October 28th now.
Fave line of the night: “Are my dinners ready yet?” Almost peed my pants.
well I seem to be in the minority with the lowtax shorts. I loved the premise-his daughter was recorded telling a typically fantastical story for her age which was then set to animation recreating her words. Her story was silly and fantastical and very imaginative and she recites it barely taking a breath. If people didn’t find this funny it is because it was meant to present a child’s train of thought set to animation which left me more amazed than doubled over in laughter.

Everyone was happy with Reefer Madness although I wish the dialog in the movie could have been easier to hear.

Excellent show. This was my first time at a Rifftraz Live event. The theater I was at was fairly sparse, but then, I’d imagine there were more people interested from the “college” side of El Paso than the “just in from Juarez” side. The shorts were hilarious. Using gasoline to Dry clean, wow. And grass…yeah, perfect choice. The cartoon was just odd, but then, most cartoons of the day were at that level if memory serves. The Lowtax shorts were nice and I’m sure gave Mike, Kevin, & Bill a chance to rest and do any last minute corrections. Reefer Madness is a fun movie to do, and the riffs were excellent. All in all, totally great.
Took some friends to see it who are not very familiar with MST3K and they cannot wait for October!
Clay heads in the Grasses short got a HUGE reaction in my theater!
Not a huge turnout in Peoria, IL, but, after some early technical difficulties, it was pretty non-stop laughter. The shorts were awesome!
Pretty much sold out in Albany NY…great show…lots of big laughs….
Well here’s my report from Albuquerque, NM:
1. I went to the Rio 24 (that’s right it’s got 24 theaters!)
2. BIGGEST surprises? – 1) it was the least attended of the 3 Rifftrax events so far. I know some people stayed away probably because they riffed on it already OR they’re still bitter about the Poll fiasco (I know I know why bother with a poll with choices if they were just going to riff on “Reefer” anyway?) or maybe they just couldn’t afford in these rough economical times but C’MON! Most people probably KNEW they riffed on “Plan 9” on DVD earlier but the theater was packed then so what’s up now? & 2) How CRAZY and amazingly funny the 3 shorts were. The Gasoline short was one of the most insane they’ve ever done (almost on a “One Got Fat” level) and they milked much humor from it. The Grass short was just as nuts & funny. And I still don’t believe that “Hobo Father & Son at the North Pole” cartoon was based on an actual Aesop fable but it was another comedy gem.
2. Most notable? – The show started off PERFECTLY. It was on time. No technical glitches. No Gloria Estefan live concert footage intro. This would’ve been the biggest surprise if the audience hadn’t been as small as it was.
3. BIGGEST laugh? – When the lady came out of the house with “fake flames” on her in the Gasoline short & any mentions of celebrities in Reefer.
4. the “odd or maybe not as funny as the rest of the show bit?” choice (aka the Jonathan Coulton award?) – the 2 animated clips from Mr. Lowtax and his 5 year old daughter. They were funny and fwiw I wouldn’t mind watching some more tales from her & her Dad but I have to say I preferred the 3 shorts Rifftrax riffed on more. At least Mr. Lowtax & his daughter were funnier than JoCo and got more to say than Weird Al did.
5. How did it compare to other Rifftrax events? – I had a GREAT time! I thought it was just as funny as “Plan 9” and “Christmas Shorts” and I’m VERY glad I went. Can’t wait for “House On Haunted Hill” near Halloween!

The turnout here in southern Indiana was about the same as the other Rifftrax Live shows. This part of the world is so “back-woodsy” that I wouldn’t expect more people to appriciate something as witty and entertaining as anything related to MST3K. I live in “Bizarro World”. :roll:
Anyway, I thought the show was wonderful. I laughed my butt off the whole time and had a blast, like always. The shorts were fantastic, especially the “Grass” one. That was my pick for highlight of the night. The new jokes for “Reefer Madness” were great. I did catch a few of the jokes from the first version, but they were all just as funny this time.
I’m just so glad that the spirit of riffing bad movies is still alive and well, even after nearly 20 years since I first came across MST3K. I can’t even put into words how much laughter and joy everyone from that show has and continues to put into my life!
I can’t wait for Oct. 28th! It’s going to be, yet again, another blast…I just know it! ;-)

Same on the 23rd St. Clearview theater (about 85-90% sold). Other than the free “Incredible Hulk” episode they did a few years ago this was my first Rifftrax anything. It felt so relaxing to be in a movie theater with like-minded individuals laughing hysterically at what is essentially an extension of the Sci-Fi “MST3K” era humor/mentality. I haven’t had this feeling since I saw “MST3K: The Movie” in theaters twice back in ’96. Corbett’s Crow is my favorite MST3K character of all time (Trace’s Crow is awesome, I just like angry Sci-Fi Crow better :twisted: ), I loved to hear Bill’s voice was so much like hearing Crow dishing sarcasm on the stuff being riffed. Didn’t really like the idea of seeing Kevin/Mike/Bill on a ‘Brady Bunch’ split-screen next to the movie (my attention was solely on the movie/short with only ocassional glances at the guys) but, during a couple of slow patches/botched jokes, it was clear Kevin loves to ham it up (pointing, winking, etc.). And Good God, Mike looks like he’s had Botox injections and plastic surgery done on his face! :shock: The ‘fake’ trivia cards were OK.
The Lowtax shorts were out of place but they were quick, harmless and served their function (give the guys a breathing break and warming us up). The first short about gasoline fires was hysterical; the ‘burning’ accident had the entire theater laughing so loud and hysterically we lost about a dozen riffs during/after that scene. The one about ‘grass’ had my favorite riff of the night (‘David Lynch’s Wedding Registry’ :mrgreen: ) and the ‘Isop’ cartoon was surreal. ‘Reefer Madness’ being in color kind-of ruined the experience a bit since the coloring harkens back to the Ted Turner era of bad colorizing technology (unlike, for example, the seamless colorization done to Harryhausen’s “20 Million Miles To Earth”). Besides the jackets the individualized color of each person’s smoke was just stupid, though Kevin got a couple of zings out of that. No one riff stands out but there was a consistent, solid amount of jokes (loved the running gag about the leader of the gang of drug dealers always wanting to/thinking about eating) to a flick that pretty much sends itself up. The entire theater ate it all up and a good time was had by all. Loved when a good third of the audience pointed out to each other (i.e. all of us) the ‘Dick Tracy’ headline during the movie’s newspaper headline scenes.
So, my first Rifftrax experience and I can safely say I’ll be a returning customer. While I don’t feel that Mike/Kevin/Bill can match the togetherness of “Cinematic Titanic” (it’s just three guys talking, versus “CT’s” team of comedians performing) the proof is whether I laughed or not and whether I want to get that “MST3K: The Movie” togetherness feeling in a movie theater full of MiSTies (or MiSTie-like folks). The answer to both is a resounding YES so I’m definitely coming back October 28th to see ‘burn victim’ Vincent Price do his thing (and the Rifftrax gang do theirs).

When the lady in the movie asks her boyfriend to pour her a bigger drink he says “where do you put it? Do you have a hollow leg?” To which they respond with “that’s what Paul McCartney says every time he writes an alimony check.”
Yeah, that McCartney joke got pretty much the biggest reaction at my theater as well. So terrible and yet so great.
Went to see it in Buffalo, NY. Very little turnout, but the audience more than made up for it in the laughter department. Took my Dad, this is his first event though he is pretty familiar with MST3k, and he LOVED it. When we left, the first comment he made was, “can’t wait for October!”
We enjoyed all the shorts, but, like many of the other comments mention, the “Grass” short stole the show. I had a hard time breathing through it because I was laughing so hard. The gasoline short also got a tremendous amount of deep laughs and certainly broke the ice in our theatre. The Aesop (Really? Not familiar with THAT story of his) short had people laughing out of terror as well as humor. Mainly because it was just so dang bizarre.
The Lowtax shorts were well received, for what they were. Truth be told, I’d rather have those shorts than Coulton (though some of his music is ok) or Veronica Belmont (who, while attractive, is neither funny nor a good hostess). The shorts were quick, cute, and the best non-Rifftrax element they’ve had at the live events so far.
Hadn’t seen “Reefer Madness” in a while, and have never seen the 3-Riffer Edition, so all the jokes were new to me. Thought the riffs were well spaced, but have to agree that there were some slower spots, but almost all the riffs worked, so can you really complain?
I’ve been to all the live events so far, and am definitely going back.
Probably the biggest groaner for me was the Smoot-Hawley joke. Makes me wonder which of the Rifftrax writers is the history/economics geek.

Weirdest observation? – Mike is starting to look and sound a little like former Top 40 DJ Rick Dees! Remember him? Maybe I should just ignore this and hope he never does a cover of “Disco Duck” for Rifftrax? :roll:
Went to a different theater than the other two shows. Much less people than before, but it might be the norm for this one, hard to tell.
Loved the pace. They hit the ground running, slowing just a touch for a little bit of Lowtax. Whether you liked them or not, they were quick and didn’t grind the show to a halt, though I agree that the second Lowtax felt like it was accidentally shown when it was.
Thought the shorts were fantastic, with Grass being the best of the three. Aside from the minor sound balance in the first short, did anyone else feel like Bill wasn’t quite with that one? Nothing terrible, just a little more stuttering and the like than normal.
The main event, always a classic, but I always forget how much it drags near the end. Plenty of new jokes and very little downtime. I was a little disappointed they didn’t mention the Dick Tracy headline on the newspaper and I really wanted a riff on the judge being the same judge from Disorder In the Court (AKA the one 3 Stooges short you can buy anywhere for a nickel), but otherwise I was quite happy. I’d go so far as to say as far as content and presentation, easily the best of their live shows. Looking forward to the next one!
So does anyone remember any comment about the iPad contest winner?
I couldn’t go and I won’t be able to go to the encore show since it’s playing an hour away from me and my mom won’t take me! :cry: :evil:

I hear rumors that the iPad winner blew by during the credits, but I didn’t see it at all.

Went to the same place as last summer’s, in one of the Denver suburbs. Seems the turnout was lower than for Plan 9. Agree with most of the comments on the lowtax videos; a pure waste of time in my mind. I’d rather have some music with clever lyrics composed by an adult familiar with humor, satire, etc. Yes, the clay heads in the grass short got a great reception in our theatre, as did the fake flames on the housewife. As for Reefer, I knew going in they were presenting the colorized version, and actually dug the purple smoke! All in all, a good show and most of the audience seemed in great spirits at the end.
It was awesome! I had to go to a theater in a town near mine, since our town’s theater wasn’t playing it. But I was quite shocked at the number of people that attended. Almost the entire theater was filled. I laughed so hard that my ribs still hurt. The whole theater seemed to love it. This was also the first live RiffTrax show I’ve attended. I’m definitely going to the live show for ‘House on Haunted Hill’ on October 28th. It’s gonna be a blast!

As for Lowtax’s contributions, well, let’s just say it’s a lot easier to single out the few moments that DIDN’T have the crowd guffawing. Cute, but out of place.(But I’ll take JoCo over Lowtax any day…)
So. Is it October yet?
The show was great fun, especially the shorts. I thought they might have tweaked one of my submitted riffs by changing the wording a bit (two words were altered), but I didn’t see my name in the credits, so someone must have submitted an extremely similar one before I submitted mine. :| Oh, well.
The theater wasn’t as crowded as I was hoping, there were only about 30 people. (We were in the Gulfport, Mississippi Cinemark.) We were the first ones there, and it was beginning to look like there’d only be six people until about two minutes prior to the show beginning. The “something awful” shorts still feel like filler, but they weren’t just plain stupid like the ones at the “Plan 9” show, so that’s a plus. Honestly, I wish they would just stick with the feature and a few shorts. I understand why they feel the need to include some more bonus things like that, but it’s really unnecessary(and since the level of quality isn’t on par with the rest of the show, what’s the point?).
The first two shorts damn near brought the house down; the laughter was so loud and continuous that we could barely hear the short itself. The riffing on the Aesop’s Fable short was a little sparse, but as someone who really digs old and odd animation, this one was interesting enough all on its own. I really hope they do more obscure animated shorts in the future.
The Rifftrax of “Reefer Madness” is one of the few of their DVDs I don’t own, so I’d never seen it. The riffing was all new to me. We really enjoyed it.
It looks like we’ll be unable to attend the showing of “House On Haunted Hill,” which is a damn shame, since I love Vincent Price movies. They really need to stream these live shows on their website for a few dollars cheaper so people who can’t go out of town that day can still see it. I’m sure many of us would watch it that way. Conversely, maybe I’ll get extremely lucky, and they’ll actually broadcast it to the theater in town here. Hattiesburg is a college town, and I’m sure they’d draw a decent crowd. Bigger than the crowd in Gulfport, in any case!
Ugh! My theater messed up the audio so there was no sound for the first 5 minutes. They finally turned it on after the Gasoline short was underway (missed all the riffs during the explosions). But with that fixed, the show was awesome. Saw it in a Daly City multiplex, right outside of San Francisco. Sparse but enthusiastic attendance, maybe 30-40 people in a room that seats 300. Oh well. Any other West Coast theaters have this problem or was it only mine?
We were missing sound at the beginning, but thankfully, it only lasted about 30 seconds.
Saw the show at the Cupertino AMC (near San Jose,Ca). The theater was more than a third, less than half full. But lot’s of laughter. The grass short had the best reception by far!. There were more people there then when I saw Xmas Shorts in San Diego, but still the best experience was seeing Plan 9 live after Comic Con (or the 2 CT SF Sketchfest performances)! We did have a slight sync problem for our showing, which wasn’t bad enough to ruin the experience but was slightly annoying. Anybody else have this problem at their show? We had a blast anyway and are eagerly anticipating October 28th!
My theater wasn’t sold out, but it was pretty full. There were enough people there to have quite a few (mostly late comers) sitting down in the neck killer rows of seats on the floor right in front of the screen, which is usually what I consider a “crowded” theater. The sound over all felt too low, and had a weird echoy quality which made it seem like we were getting more of the theater audio (of the films, not just the crowd) than a straight feed of the film itself. The audio of the first short was obviously old and low already, so it was a little hard to hear because of this, but the rest of the shorts and the film were better as far as being audible (well the third short didn’t have any dialog anyway so it didn’t matter). I don’t remember this being an issue at all in the first two live shows, and I’d prefer to have the movie audio be a little clearer than it was here, even if we can’t hear as much of the live audience at the performance. But in all once Reefer Madness was on for a while the audio issue became secondary to just laughing my ass off. The Lowtax shorts weren’t great, but they were indeed short, so I they didn’t mind them. Much easier to sit through than the Jonathan Coulton songs from Plan 9. I’m sure Lowtax had a blast working on them with his daughter, but as an outside observer I’ve seen the same idea done a hundred times before, and in ways that were much more fun to watch. The audio of his daughter especially felt very heavily edited, which took away most of the feeling of fun spontaneity you get when an excited child is telling you something like that.
In all this show was great, and I feel sorry (well actually no I don’t) for any dolt who didn’t go to it just because Reefer Madness wasn’t a new movie for them to do. Neither was Plan 9, and I don’t remember people complaining about that. And this Reefer performance was very different than the DVD, much more so than the Plan 9 show. I’ve seen the three riffer version of Reefer Madness two or three times, and I only recognized a few of those old jokes tonight. I’m sure there might have been more old jokes that I just didn’t recognize as old (I mean I don’t have it memorized or anything), but I’d still say a huge majority of it was new material. I’m definitely going to buy this one when they release it on DVD.
Oh and in the end credits they listed the people who submitted jokes and right after that the person who won the iPad. I was reading the previous credits, and they were flying by at a pretty good rate so I didn’t quite catch the name of the iPad winner, but I did see just before it went off the screen that it started with a “J” which was enough to tell me I wasn’t the winner.
My theater in Springfield, Oregon was about 2/3rds full and I actually recognized a few faces from the last viewing. From the sound of everybody around me, this was a big hit.
I was really impressed with the pacing of this show. When you compare this with Plan 9, they definitely trimmed out the fat and left no “slow bits” behind at all. The shorts were a riot (the boy in the grass mask will probably haunt my dreams) and Reefer Madness had enough new riffs that it felt like a new experience. I’m surprised that so few people like the Lowtax bits. I thought they were funny, fast, and just the right breather. Maybe it’s because my daughter is about that age, but I dug them. All in all, this was the best show yet, and I already have October 28th marked on my calendar.
Time to snuggle into my asbestos blanket and catch some sleep…

That’s the sort of trivia where, you come across it in a book, you set the book down and tell it that it’s going to have to take a “time-out” now and later if it wants to not say such patently ridiculous things then maybe it can come out and be read further.
