RiffTrax Live: They Did It!

Today is the final day of the “stretch goal” in RiffTrax’s latest Kickstarter campaign and … they did it! At this writing they are $5,000 and change over the $250,000 goal that will allow them to do “Anaconda” in theaters nationwide on Oct. 30. That’s on top of “Sharknado” on July 15 and the 1998 “Godzilla” on Aug. 14.

The employees at my local theater are gonna get to know me!

Joel to Teach Class in Aug.

Maine Media Workshops + College is a non-profit, non-traditional school that provides experiential education for students of all skill levels in film, photography, writing, multimedia and design.

They have just announced that Joel will teach a class in “Late Night Comedy Writing” (is that writing for late night comedy or writing comedy late at night?).

This class explores various approaches to creating late night and cable comedy-variety content, including monolog, running bits, sketches and short comic vignettes of the Funny or Die type.

Fluency in Yiddish not required, but encouraged. Also the ability to recognize the previous sentence as a joke.

More info here.

Thanks to Michael for the heads up.

RIP Jacques Herlin

Herlin PARIS — French character actor Jacques Herlin, who had more than 100 roles in a busy career, died in a hospital here on June 7. He was 86. MSTies will remember him as Ross in the movie in episode 504- SECRET AGENT SUPER DRAGON.

His obit is here, but, um, it’s in French.

Thanks to Duane for the heads up.

Weekend Discussion Thread: Your Top 5 Riffs of All Time

I know, there are thousands of brilliant riffs, but let’s hear your five all-time favorites, the ones that made you fall off the couch.

Here’s mine:

1. “Nipple, nipple, tweak, tweak, fly! fly! fly!” — The Corpse Vanishes

2. “Its Gloria Estefan and the Catalina Deus Ex Sound Machina!” (One of the greatest riffs ever, that’s FIVE JOKES IN 10 WORDS!) — Catalina Caper

3. “Gomez! I’ve invented the wheel!!” — Cave Dwellers

4. “Get back in your little boat, Grandpa!” –The Deadly Mantis

5. “Okay, stop. Everyone go up a shirt size.” — Werewolf

Let’s hear yours! Give both the riff and the episode it came from.
