News About the MST3K: The Movie Release — The Dave Alvin Version of the Theme

From Jordan at Shout!Factory directly:

As always, we try to fulfill fan requests, and so for our BD/DVD release of MST3K The Movie, we asked Dave Alvin for help in locating any recording of his version of the MST3K theme song. He unearthed a 2″ tape, which we had baked and transferred. Sure enough, it contained a single 3 1/2 minute unmixed take (circled on the original engineering log sheet). We had it mixed at Chace Audio per Dave’s instructions, and it sounds incredible. By the time this all happened, however, our BD/DVD menus had been locked, so we couldn’t make it an official extra. Best we could do was to play the song in its entirety over the bonus menu. But it’s all there, and it’s every bit the rockin’ version of legend. Thanks, most of all, to Dave Alvin, who really came through for all of us.

Good enough for me!!

A message from Mary Jo

Mary Jo asked us pass this message along:

Hey, everybody!

I’m trying something new and exciting. I’m doing a live reading of some short selections from my book, “Employee of The Month And Other Big Deals.”

Wednesday, July 17, 8:30 p.m. eastern time, 7:30 p.m. central time, 5:30 p.m. pacific time.

I’ve seen a lot of you saying, “Aw, wish I could be there.” Well, you CAN!

It’s via StageIt. Stageit is an online venue where artists perform live, interactive shows for their fans directly from their laptop offering fans unique experiences that are never archived. Live! From your computer! It’s like, ya know, SCIENCE!

Check it out: www.stageit.com

I’ll read a couple of stories from the book, there’ll be a very special “Show and Tell” about the making of “Employee of The Month”, and a few Q&As.

It’s fun, it’s free, it’s 20 minutes max.

(StageIt indicates that it’s “pay-what-you-wish” — but you don’t have to pay anything. Just join us!)

If you do decide to tip, the top tipper will win a ticket to a Cinematic Titanic show (check our upcoming schedule here: www.cinematictitanic.com).

The second toppest tipper will get an autographed copy of, “Employee of The Month And Other Big Deals”.

Thirdliest tipper will receive someone else’s book autographed by me. I’ll show you all the books I’m about to bring to Half Price books, you’ll choose one, and I’ll autograph it!

Hope to see you there!

Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Star Wars References

Alert regular Paul suggests:

What are everyone’s favorite Star Wars references made by the Mystery Science Theater crew?

My favorites include riffs made during opening text crawl shots in the experiments that remind the riffers of the opening Star Wars text crawl shots, like the mild joke during start of The Phantom Creeps serial during Rocket Attack USA (Did George Lucas make this?), as well as the more overt jokes during the opening text crawl in Teenage Crimewave.

I was a little hesitant to do this one, because I didn’t think there were really that many. But since Paul emailed me, I’ve been noticing them in a lot of episodes. So, okay, let’s tackle it. I think I would have to pick the shot of Mama Trumpy’s cave in “Pod People,” prompting Tom to do his Yoda impression: “Luke! Finish your training, you will!”

What’s yours?
