Posted by Sampo, on June 13th, 2013 BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF.–Actress Maxine Stuart, who had a long career on stage, in film and on TV, including memorable guest appearances on “The Twilight Zone” and “The Wonder Years,” died at her home here June 6 of natural causes. MSTies will remember her as Peggy in the movie in episode 615- KITTEN WITH A WHIP.

Posted by Sampo, on June 10th, 2013 JACKSONVILLE, FLA. — Don Barton, the mad genius behind the movie “Zaat” — better known to MSTies as the movie in episode 1005- THE BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z, died here June 8 of complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 83.
His hometown paper has his obit here.
Mr. Barton took a dim view of MST3k mocking his masterwork. I got an email from him a number of years ago, in which he insisted — as he has on many occasions — that Sci-Fi Channel, and later Shout!Factory, never had the proper rights secured to allow MST3K to do the movie and, later, sell the DVD. Everyone else I’ve spoken to who was knowledgable about this says he was wrong, but as far as I know he went to his grave convinced otherwise.
Update: I’m being told, by several people who sound like they know what they’re talking about, that I don’t have the facts exactly right, and in fact there were issues with the Scifi Channel getting the rights, which were settled out of court, and that there was not any issue with Shout. That is not what remember Barton telling me in his email to me, but my memory may be faulty and that was at least two hard drive crashes ago and I have long since lost my copy of the email. So, since I can’t prove it, I will give these people the benefit of the doubt.
Posted by Sampo, on June 9th, 2013 Eagle-eyed MSTies noticed this on Amazon and alerted us. We knew they we were working on something like this, but this is the first we heard that it was definitely happening.
Here’s what Shout is telling us now:
* They’re releasing a collector’s edition Blu-ray/DVD combo. Both discs will have identical content. The cover will be the original theatrical poster; and it’ll have a reverse cover with new art from Steve Vance.
* There may be more extras, but these are the extras that are definite:
— The Making of Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie (the EPK that fans have probably seen around)
— Two new docs from Ballyhoo: “Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Movie: The Motion Picture Odyssey” (including new interviews with cast and crew and never-before-seen behind the scenes footage) and “This Island Earth: 2 1/2 Years In the Making.”
— Original trailer.
Update: And for those who have been asking:
— Deleted scenes including the removed sequences from the riffed motion picture and the alternate ending.
I know people are going to start asking about other extras. The answer, up front, is we don’t know … yet. You’ll know when we do.
Incidentally, if you’d like to pre-order, we’d be happy if you’d use one of the following links:
Pre-order from SHOUT! Factory.
Pre-order from Amazon.
Posted by Sampo, on June 8th, 2013 Alert reader Ryan asks:
What MST3K characters would you want in your foxhole? The enemy has surrounded you its you and your five, and you gotta hold out till reinforcements arrive (or till the bitter end). Who would you have with you (and why)?
I can’t come up with five, but I know one for sure: Ator. He could make a quick hang glider and fly us to safety.
What’s your pick?
