I recently rewatched Deathstalker and the Warriors From Hell. I love scene where the hero is watching the girl being cremated and they riff “He was overwhelmed by feelings of ambiguity.” How many times have these movies presented us with scenes that are supposed to be heart-wrenching and tragic and all we can do is shrug? I think it’s worth discussing.
So let’s discuss our favorite expirations. One of my faves is that guy in “Devil Fish” whose long, drawn-out passing caused Crow to declare: “Jeez, Francisco Franco died quicker!”
What’s your favorite?
Posted by Sampo, on August 30th, 2012 LOS ANGELES — Actor Steve Franken, perhaps best remembered as the wealthy and snobbish Chatsworth Osborne Jr. on the early 1960s sitcom “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis,” died of cancer here on Aug. 24. He was 80. MSTies will recall him as Henry Maitland in the movie in episode 305- STRANDED IN SPACE.
His NYT obit is here.

CINCINNATI–Neil Armstrong, the soft-spoken engineer who became a global hero when he made “one giant leap for mankind” with a small step onto the moon, died Aug. 25 following complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures. He was 82.
MSTies will remember that Joel and the bots paid a tribute to him and the other astronauts of Apollo 11 in a host segment in episode 111- MOON ZERO TWO.
His A.P. obit is here.

I noticed in the Rifftrax Manos something I had previously ignored: in the Master’s Valley Lodge there’s bookshelves in every room, and there’s a couple books on each of them.
What *do* the MiSTed movie characters read in their spare time, and why?
The Master’s Valley Lodge books all seemed to be bound volumes of the state penal code, so I’m guessing Torgo was trying to pass the Texas bar exam. This also suggests he was maybe working for the Master to pay off his student loans, which is at least as depressing as anything else in the film.
I’m guessing that on the nightstand of J.C. of “Sidehackers” is Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”
What’s your suggestion?
Posted by Sampo, on August 24th, 2012 The awesome Chris Hardwick and Nerdist podcast crew interview Joel and Joel says a couple of little things about the show’s origins that I don’t think I ever heard before.
