For ages — after all of the “miracles” Shout! Factory has made happen with rights to movies that the owners (Sandy Frank) swore “Over my dead body” – I’ve thought of suggesting a weekend survey of “What movie/episode would you almost bet money Shout! Factory will never be able to get the rights to release?”
Between the movies that Rhino screwed up with (Amazing Colossal Man, Godzilla vs Megalon), the way things go in and out of copyright (the “Robot Rumpus” short) and the fact that some of the movies are owned by corporations who think the movies are decent or at least still money-makers (Space Travelers), you keep thinking there’s at least one that’s going to end up being impossible.
My guess was always Revenge of the Creature. Because even though it’s not one of the studio’s best efforts, Universal is notorious about protecting the image of their Monsters – even the minor ones. I thought there was no way we’d see that on home video…
Yes, another miracle.
So what episode do you think will never get released on home video?
Posted by Sampo, on August 17th, 2012 The Titans will do a show Sunday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Saban Theater, 8440 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, Calif. The movie they will be doing is “Doll Squad. Get tickets here.
An organization called “The Cinefamily,” which runs The Silent Theater at 611 N. Fairfax Ave. in Los Angeles, is throwing at 10-day festival (that sounds like a LOT of fun) called the Everything Is Festival.
The night after the Cinematic Titanic Show, Monday, Aug. 20, Joel host something called “Show & Tell with Joel Hodgson.”
It would probably be best if you read their explanations for all this.
Posted by Sampo, on August 16th, 2012 Well, the big surprise, I guess, was the appearance by our pal Rupert Munch, the guy who is making the “Manos” sequel, as Torgo, and his music video at the end.
My theater was about 3/4 full and they seemed to really enjoy it.
The shorts really warmed folks up nicely. Norman and his catchphrase will immediately enter the lexicon.
There were a couple of points, where I heard, in my head, the MST3K riff, but for the most part I completely forgot about them.
I really appreciated the moments where they just let the movie be the movie, and didn’t feel the need to say anything.
What did you think?
UPDATE: Chris Griffy of Examiner.com liked it.
Posted by Sampo, on August 16th, 2012 Alan Scher Zagier of the Associated Press has a piece about movie riffing in general, with quotes from Joel and Mike.
Update: It looks like this piece is getting picked on the wires and lots of different outlets are running it, including the Washington Post.
