Have you got one? Something that just makes you cringe, but every time you find it on TV you drop whatever you’re doing and watch the whole thing? Tell us! It can be something MST3k/RT/CT has done or it can be something else. Spill!

If you’re reading this blog, then I assume that you are into bad movies as much as I am. I got into a discussion the other day about one that is very close to my heart: 1987’s “Masters of the Universe.” It came up because apparently a remake is in the works. :::sigh::: How can you possibly improve on a movie that rivals “Road House” as the best bad movie ever made? I mean that cast! (Dolph Lundgren, Frank Langella, Meg Foster, Billy Barty, a so-young-she’s-positvely-dewy Courteney Cox, Jon Cypher, James Tolkan, Christina Pickles, the list goes on and on) and scene after incredibly riffable scene of nonsense played (almost) completely straight. It’s a guity pleasure and my nominee for a list of the truly great bad movies.
Have you got one? Something that just makes you cringe, but every time you find it on TV you drop whatever you’re doing and watch the whole thing? Tell us! It can be something MST3k/RT/CT has done or it can be something else. Spill! German director Kurt Maetzig died Aug. 8, according to this report from Reuters. He was 101. These European sources don’t often list the place and cause of death, but he was living in the German village of Wildkuhl and at age 101 we can surmise natural causes. In 1960 he directed “Der schweigende Stern,” based on Stanislaw Lem‘s novel “The Astronauts.” It was dubbed, edited and re-released in 1962 as the movie in episode 211- FIRST SPACESHIP ON VENUS.
![]() I’m likin’ this one already, just by the title. Download it and see a sample here. Meanwhile, Barry Thompson of the Boston Phoenix interviews the guys as the “Manos” show gets ever closer! Josh is a guest on the Dork Forest podcast with comedian Jackie Kashian. They have a great raport, and the discussion is wide-ranging to say the least.
Well, this wasn’t what I was going to do this week, but then the gang at The Onion’s “A.V. Club” posted this article in which they list their 10 “essential” episodes. And I KNEW this would lead to days of people discussing where the list went right and where it went wrong. So why not just make it the WDT and leave it at that?
So, to be clear, this ISN’T your 10 FAVORITE episodes. It’s the 10 episodes you think everybody should see. Here’s my list: What’s yours? (We had a little glitch and comments got closed [and I also fixed those wayward question marks]. Sorry. Open again.) |
