Oh and while we’re on the subject of miscellany, yes, we know that a visual on “The Daily Show” last week used the phrase “Mystery Finance Theater 2012.” But it was such a glancing reference (Jon Stewart didn’t even say it) they we didn’t think it worthy of its own item. It’s kind of like how, about 10-15 times a year, some movie critic will invoke the show, as in: “This movie is so bad it would be worthy of Mystery Science Theater 3000.” It’s become such a lazy cliche there’s really no point in mentioning it every time somebody does it.
Oh, I like this one. Alert emailer “Timberwlfy” suggests:
With the spate of superhero movies this summer, and the success of Avengers, who would comprise your “MST3K Avengers”? I think my team line up would be: The Indestructible Man, Puma Man, Eegah, Commando Cody, and Beverly Garland just because she’s Beverly Garland! (every team needs a strong female character, and she’s the pick of the MST3K litter on that point) Of course, a team needs a foe. Perhaps they band together to stop a rampaging Colossal Man, or the Phantom of Krankor? I can see quite a bit of fun to be had with this idea.
It’s Sunday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Saban Theater, 8440 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, Calif. The movie they will be doing is “Doll Squad. Get tickets here.
And: we don’t normally mention RiffTrax products without Mike, Kevin or Bill in them, but we make an exception for our pals, the very funny Janet Varney and Cole Stratton. They have a new one out.
