George Maharis RIP

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF — Actor George Maharis, the star of TV’s “Route 66,” who went on to appear on “Fantasy Island” and other shows, died here May 24.

Maharis co-starred with Martin Milner in “Route 66,” and received an Emmy nomination for his role as Buz, a handsome beatnik-adjacent working class guy. Part way through the third season, Maharis left the show after being hospitalized for hepatitis.

Longtime MSTies will remember his role as Les Phillips in the movie in episode K13- SST: DEATH FLIGHT.

Variety has the story.

Thanks to Tim for the heads up.

Thoughts:
• This episode premiered on Aug. 19, 2022.
• Plenty of laughs in this one. Very funny stuff. But though the riffing was great, the movie put me to sleep.
• Callbacks: a Spanish version of “Every Country Has a Monster.” “And watch out for snakes.” “Hi keebat!”
Fave riff: “When I heard the title ‘Batwoman,’ I knew there’d be a lot water, but this is ridiculous”
Honorable mentions: “And mink,” “Pull the chain for ping-pong balls,” “Put your hands on your hips…,” “Where was she keeping that smoke bomb?” “Wow, negging totally works,” “I do NOT like the sound of that transmission.” “From here to infirmary” and “A pledge pin??”

RIP Tina Turner

Zurich Switzerland — Singer and actress Tina Turner, whose soul classics and pop hits like “The Best” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” made her a superstar, has died at her home near here. She was 83.

Turner had suffered a number of health issues in recent years including cancer, a stroke and kidney failure.

No MSTie could forget Mike’s impression of her in a host segment in episode 706- LASERBLAST.

Thanks to Ray for the heads up.
