Our pal and TIME Magazine’s resident MSTie Richard Corliss has a nice piece on RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic, including some fresh quotes from Joel and Kevin.
It’ll be interesting to see if this sparks a round of other media coverage. In other media mentions, the terrific “Topless Robot” site recently did a list of its favorite MST3K guest stars. I’ve been getting some good suggestions for discussions (and keep ’em coming!) but this one is actually one I thought of! Go figure!
In this week’s episode guide entry, I noted that a few minutes of theater riffing from that episode was included on the “best-of” tape Best Brains used to sell the show to The Comedy Channel. And I wondered: was this three minutes or so really among the funniest moments from the KTMA era? So, here’s the challenge for this weekend’s discussion: Let’s pretend that there is a chance that all 10 national seasons of MST3K could come back to TV. But there’s one problem: The network executive who is going to make the decision has been living in a cave somewhere. He or she has never heard of MST3K, never seen it. And, let’s pretend that you, MSTie that you are, are being asked to help put together a “best-of” compilation that will convince him or her of what a great show it is. You have to select two three- to five-minute theater segments — one featuring Joel and one featuring Mike — that you think will show the executive what a funny show this is. For the Joel segment, I’m going to go with the section toward the beginning of The Magic Voyage of Sinbad, right after Sinbad arrives home (“and nobody seems to care!”) For the Mike segment, I would pick almost any moment from “Incredibly Strange Creatures…” but especially any of the musical numbers. What would you pick? In the weird-but-true department, 81-year-old Sandy Frank and his 57-year-old wife, Brenda, have both been charged with assault for throwing drinking glasses at each other. Gamera would definitely not approve.
The encore showing of last Thursday’s RiffTrax Live show is running tonight in many — but not all, apparently — of the same theaters. More info here.
Stone Bistro and Brewery in San Diego will be showing “Twilight: New Moon” with Rifftrax commentary (pre-recorded, not live) tomorrow night. More info here. And, if you attended the show last Thursday, you got this one as a freebie. If you didn’t, here’s your chance to pick up: A cautionary tale about NOT, repeat, NOT washing your clothes in tubs of gasoline! Whew! Glad somebody told me! We don’t normally link to blogs that often, but I thought this was interesting: Cinematic Titanic and the iPad.
