Tom T. Hall RIP

Franklin, Tenn. — Country music songwriter Tom T. Hall died at his home here Aug. 20. He was 85.

Known to his fans and fellow musicians as “the Storyteller,” Hall was among a small circle of Nashville songwriters, including Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller and others, who imbued country lyrics with newfound depth and insight in the 1960s and ’70s.

MSTies will recall TV’s Frank declaring his admiration for Hall in a host segment in episode 318- STAR FORCE: FUGITIVE ALIEN I.

There’s an extensive appreciation here.

Thanks to commenter “Brock Lee Rubberband”for the heads up.

A Couple of Obscure Obits

LONDON — When Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer for the Rolling Stones, died on Aug. 24 (he was 80) in hospital here, I wasn’t sure there was a MSTory connection. But I was reminded of conversation about drummers in a host segment in episode K18- THE MILLION EYES OF SU-MURU. So all we can do is remove his asterisk and say RIP.

Actor Masanari Nihei, who played Jerry in the movie in episode K14- /314- MIGHTY JACK died on Aug. 21; he was also 80. He was perhaps best known in a number of Japanese TV shows starring Ultraman.
We’ve found brief mentions (in Japanese) but nothing like an official obituary. If you see one, let us know.

Sonny Chiba, RIP

Kimitsu City, Japan — Actor and martial artist Sonny Chiba died at a hospital here Aug. 19, due to pneumonia caused by COVID-19. He was 82.

A pivotal figure in the 1970s explosion of martial arts cinema, he is perhaps best known as the “fists for hire” trouble shooter Takuma (Terry) Tsurugi in the popular “Street Fighter” series of action films.

MSTies know him for his portrayal of Ironsharp a.k.a. Space Chief in the movie in episode 819- INVASION OF THE NEPTUNE MEN.

Anime News Network has the story, although we’re sure there will be many tributes in the future.

Thanks to “Albuquerque Turkey” for the heads up.

RIP Roger Cudney

MEXICO CITY–Roger Cudney, A prolific actor in movies and Spanish-language telenovelas, died July 5 at a hospital here from complications following a serious car accident in May. He was 85.

This report may need some translation.

Thanks to Gordon for the heads up.
