Weekend Discussion Thread: What Episodes Should Shout! Re-Release This Year?

Alert reader Kris writes:

What episodes should Shout Factory release, or re-release, in 2012? Or beyond? Boy, so much to choose from, right? Immediately, I’d say the big ones are “Mitchell” and “Diabolik,” but I’d also love to see re-releases for “Time Chasers,” “Bloodlust!” “The Deadly Mantis,” “Danger! Death Ray” and “Quest of the Delta Knights.

Here’s a vote for episode 506- EEGAH!

What’s your pick?

Slime People and I think there’s one in there about a Deadly Mantis or something or even High School Big Shot.

I’d really love for Mitchell to get the two disc special edition treatment that Manos did!
I don’t know if it’s possible, but a sit down interview with Joe Don would rule.

Maybe a Joel and Mike joint interview….

    Hey I can hope!

As far as a re-release, I’d suggest “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians”, as long as they gave it the same good treatment as they did with “Santa Claus”.

And maybe they can clear up the rights issues and put “Amazing Colossal Man” on DVD.

For rereleases I’d like to see them get out the rest of the episodes featured on Volume 9, as it’s probably the most ridiculously overpriced Rhino collection on Amazon Marketplace.

As for future sets, I’d like to see a Planet Killer theme set with Deadly Mantis, She Creature, Riding With Death, and Agent for H.A.R.M.

My re-release wish list has 4 titles on it: Mitchell, Wild Wild World of Batwoman, The Brain that Wouldn’t Die, and Eegah!

As for new releases, if I could name my own episode box set, my dream titles would be:

    The Slime People
    Untamed Youth
    San Francisco International
    Riding With Death

But, when it comes right down to it, any new release makes me happy. :-)

Rereleases, I agree that it would be nice to have Amazing Colossal Man, if possible, on DVD.

Sadly, my MST interest was dormant in the 2000s until CT and RT re-awakened me. So, I missed out on the now out-of-print Rhino box sets. Thus, I would like Creeping Terror, Cavé Dwellers, Wild Rebels, and Mitchell.

I also wish Shout would sell each episode (new release or re-release) individually and/or come up with some drm-free download mechanism like CT uses.

It seems like all of the “Shout Select” titles so far have been ones that are available to watch instantly on Netflix (before they got taken off that is) and/or Amazon. Based off of this, I’d like to see Eegah, Cave Dwellers and Pod People. The latter two aren’t favorites of mine, but I’d like to see more complete versions of all of these episodes (with all the missing bumpers added back in, I mean).

As far as other out of print episodes go, I’d love to see a special edition of either Mitchell or The Brain that Wouldn’t Die. Or both? Please? Can this be done? And how about super hard to get ones like Wild Rebels and The Sinister Urge? I’m not gonna spend over $100 for Vol. 9 you know. I’m not that crazy.

  16. I accuse my parents and Wild Wild World of Batwoman. I missed out on them before, and I’m not paying nearly 50 bucks on amazon or ebay for old Rhino copies of them.

Both Godzilla films from season 2 and all of the Universal flicks from season 8 for releases. For re-release, wow yes, a two-disker for Mitchell AND for Batwoman. Yes, I just said that. And, I never realized that Amazing Colossal Man never got a dvd. Craziness. I thought I was being behind the times buying them on VHS back in the day.

So, how impossible IS it for Shout to finish up their anal-retentive chronology of Commando Cody S1 episodes?
They’ve got Slime People and Robot Holocaust left to go, and think MGM’s still got Holocaust. Not sure where the copyrighted American Int’l’s are these days, maybe the two Colossals might be up for grabs right now.

(I hope I’m not confusing the OP by mentioning strange, unfamiliar Comedy Central episodes.) ;)

Count me in for “Slime People” and the Godzilla films as well.

Also, I’d like “Black Scorpion” from towards the end of Season 1. I really can’t explain why but I unabashedly LOVE that one.

  21. Canucklehead says:

Stressfactor (#20) re: Black Scorpion. I agree with you on that one. I absolutely love that one un-MSTed, but really want to see what Joel and the Bots could do with it, especially the little kid. Truly, in a world full of monster movies where idiotic kids continually cause trouble by going where they’re not supposed to, that kid is king of the idiots.

Re-release- Space Mutiny, then everything else that Rhino put out.

    Release- EVERYTHING.

But, realistically, the early SCI-FI episodes probably won’t ever come out, or, episodes like “Kitten with a Whip”- but there’s no reason why failed TV pilots and crap fests like “High School Big Shot” and “Screaming Skull” can’t be issued.

The only title I would care about being re-released is THE GIANT GILA MONSTER as I was lucky enough to get a volume 10 with GODZILLA VS. MEGALON intact, but I never got that there replacement disc.

Everyone else is talking new releases, though, so here’s my wish list, I’ll pick ten Joels and ten Mikes:

    201 ROCKETSHIP XM
    310 FUGITIVE ALIEN
    311 IT CONQUERED THE WORLD
318 STAR FORCE: FUGITIVE ALIEN II
    401 SPACE TRAVELERS
    405 BEING FROM ANOTHER PLANET
    411 THE MAGIC SWORD
416 FIRE MAIDENS OF OUTER SPACE
418 THE ATTACK OF THE THE EYE CREATURES

    516 ALIEN FROM L.A.
    523 VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS
    618 HIGH SCHOOL BIG SHOT
624 SAMSON VS. THE VAMPIRE WOMEN
    704 THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN
    705 ESCAPE 2000
    806 THE UNDEAD
    814 RIDING WITH DEATH
913 THE QUEST OF THE DELTA KNIGHTS
    1013 DIABOLIK

I have all previous releases so the Shout Select re-releases do nothing for me (unless it;s a deluxe edition like Manos) But as far as never before released, Sci-Fi era episodes are been nonexistant for a year now. So give us some of those. Not saying an all Mike set or anything, spread the love, but give us some later episodes.

All of the episodes that have had poorly produced retail DVDs by Rhino.

Specifically Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders and The Dead Talk Back. Merlin for its very dark picture and The Dead Talk Back for all the horrible tape hit visual artifacts.

I would like Shout to correct their own bad DVDs that have visual artifacts, but its apparently something they’re unwilling to do.

For some reason my merlin’s mystical shop of wonders dvd seems to have a squished black level. The silhouettes disappear when the movie goes dark, which they typically compensated for by raising the pedestal (increasing the luminance) of the movie footage. It might just be the original mastering for that episode though. Maybe Merlin by itself can be re-released as a special edition shout/criterion joint effort which is what the movie really deserves. Mst3k’s production can act as a meager extra on the 9th disc of the Merlin platinum monkey toy collector’s set. HA!

  29. hungry and a little confused says:

As far as specific episodes i hope to see soon: 108- Slime People, 305- Stranded in Space, 405- Being From Another Planet,418- Attack of the Eye Creatures, 510- The Painted Hills, 519- Outlaw, 614- San Francisco International, 704- The Incredible Melting Man, 814- Riding With Death, 817- Horror of Party Beach, 913- Quest of the Delta Knights, and 1007- Track of the Moon Beast.

That’s the usual twelve episodes a year and these (to me) would make it a great year.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a reissue of The Killer Shrews just so there’s no question about everyone getting a proper copy – I tried back in the day to get a corrected one from Rhino, alas, to no avail. Otherwise I definitely agree with the suggestions of the other titles that Rhino had originally issued as single discs just to keep them available to the latecomers (and avoid the skyrocketing eBay prices).

Another vote for a two-disc Eegah: Special Edition. I would love “I Accuse My Parents” as well, but due to limited mad money, I much prefer that Shout! focus on new-to-DVD releases.

For new release, one that first introduced me to the show via a friend’s tape: Jungle Goddess.

I’ll go for Eegah, Bloodlust, Mitchell and The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. Minus Bloodlust, I think the episodes should get a special treatment. Eegah – since it’s one of the worst movies ever made, like Manos. Mitchell – because it’s Joel’s last episode. And Brain That Wouldn’t Die – because it’s Mike’s first episode.

Great topic! For re release, The Brain that wouldn’t Die and Eegah, would be great.

As for new, I’m still hopeful thtat we’ll see Riding with Death and Puma Man coming out soon. Maybe pair them up with a couple of made for tv bombs from the Joel era to maintain that kind of theme(sorry, my brain is barely functioning this morning…)

I’d like a two disc re-release of Pod People, EEGAH and Monster A Go-Go, complete with a funny mini-poster for each film, the original uncut film and exclusive interviews with the cast, Richard Kiel, Arch Hall Jr and Bill Rebane.

For releases…I’d like to see Alien From LA, I Accuse My Parents(but they didn’t listen so I killed them…I don’t think they’ll be laughing at me NOW…), Attack Of The The Eye Creatures and Robot Holocaust.

Probably re-release all the episodes that have gone out-of-print and those that have audio/visual glitches (Both Rhino and Shout).

As far as new episodes, “Horror at Party Beach” and “Pumaman”.

It’s a lot to ask, but I would like to have the original releases of the movies with and without the riffs.

  44. Cornbred says:

Danger Death Ray, Pumaman, Riding With Death, Deadly Mantis (any of 801-809 really, but Mantis was my favorite), and the two Cold War Films 602, and 205 I believe. Any of those for a new release. And the remaining two Russo-Finish films, I love those episodes so much, and a nice clean transfer would look great. Those are some of the only films they covered with visuals worth looking at.
I don’t remember what is out of print for rereleases, but I thinkg the Incredibly Strange Creatures is out of print and shouldn’t be, and Amazing Collosal Man of course. The latter should be a priority if it is at all possible to get the rights. And also . . . Chip Hitler

Invasion of the Neptune Men, to go with my Prince of Space disc (or wait, is it the other way around? The two are practically interchangeable.)
Riding with Death — best ’70s crap ever

I’d buy a special edition of Mitchell, too. How about a two-disc set, one with the MST3K version and one with the uncut movie, because some scenes were cut and most of the John Saxon ones make no sense.

I think the topic got a bit jumbled due to how its designed. It supposed to be about re-releases, but the quoted message in the topic starter mentions new releases as well.

I definitely want to see The Pumaman released. I guess that type of wishing is supposed to go in another thread though.

  49. Slartibartfast, maker of Fjords says:

Since we have all of the Rhino and Shout! DVDs, I am less interested in re-releases, except The Amazing Colossal Man of course, than in new releases. Since the next release by Shout! has a little less than a killer lineup, I was thinking of what a killer lineup of new releases would be. So, this thread is very timely. What I came up with was The Slime People, since our copy is not very good and the movie is a classic baddie, The Black Scorpion, because almost anything Ray Harryhausen did was good, Quest of the Delta Knights and Track of the Moon Beast. But, any new release is a good release.

Cave Dwellers! As a single, because my dvd cracked
and it’s prohibitively expensive to buy an Amazon dvd set
    just to get it.

And it’s always interesting to see the tire tracks
at the end of the movie, preceded by Ator’s amzing journey
through history flying his glider past all and sundry, visiting
Mad King Ludwig’s Bavaria, inventing scads of stuff to fly his glider, etc.
