Vol. 24 Details

Here’s the press release on Vol. 24, including street date and extras:

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: XXIV
4-DVD BOX SET FEATURING 4 EPISODES PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED ON DVD TO BE RELEASED BY SHOUT! FACTORY

IN STORES JULY 31

Los Angeles, CA – Put on your spacesuits and get ready for a summer vacation on the Satellite of Love! Shout! Factory has announced the newest release in their Mystery Science Theater 3000 line, readying Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIV for release on July 31. A must-have for fans of cult television shows and B-movies alike, the 4-DVD set features four episodes previously unreleased on DVD: Fugitive Alien, Star Force: Fugitive Alien II, The Sword And The Dragon and Samson Vs. The Vampire Women. Also included are all new bonus features, including introductions by Japanese cinema historian August Ragone, You Asked For It: Sandy Frank Speaks!, MST Hour Wraps, Life After MST3K: Frank Conniff, MST3K Shorts: Snow Thrills & A Date With Your Family, Lucha Gringo: K. Gordon Murray Meets Santo, and four exclusive Mini-Posters by artist Steve Vance.

The cult comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000 has always welcomed immigrant films with open arms. One can almost imagine a Satellite of Liberty greeting the waves of foreign films seeking a more prosperous life in America. Its inscription might well read, “Give me your tired plots, your poor acting, your muddled directors yearning to be schlock-free.” It is in this spirit that Volume XXIV presents four of cinema’s transplants — from Russia, Mexico and two from Japan —that simply didn’t take.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIV brings us Fugitive Alien, wherein our hero Ken is pursued as a traitor by his own race because he refuses to kill humans; Star Force: Fugitive Alien II continues the story of Captain Joe, reformed interstellar marauder Ken and the rest of the crew of the Bacchus-3 as they set off to destroy an alien race’s super-weapon; The Sword And The Dragon, an epic journey of a mythical knight and his fights against a barbarian horde in an ancient land; and Samson Vs. The Vampire Women, featuring Mexican wrestling hero Santo saving the locals from Vampire women awakened by their leader with orders to find him a bride.

Thankfully, Joel, Mike and their band of robot brothers (Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot) alleviate their (and our) suffering by watching these movies with a joyously irreverent stream of higher consciousness. You have in your hands passports to laughter. Consider them riffed and stamped by those tormented souls aboard the Satellite of Love.

Wow, a Sandy Frank interview. Never thought they’d score that one!

I guess the inclusion of those shorts is a subtle hint their respective episodes will NEVER COME OUT ON DVD.

  9. Yeah, I’m pre-ordering as soon as this site puts up the Amazon link (to help, right?).

I’m glad it’s streeting that soon, as we put our rotation on hold for a bit but can’t wait for more than a few more months to restart(and we’ll run into the FA episodes soon after that). I think this will work just about perfectly for my wife and me (not that that’s any consideration for anyone other than us :>).

With the great stuff Rifftrax has been putting out (and the Manos event) we keep getting fantastic news here. It’s going to be a very good year.

Sounds like a KILLER set with some killer extra features. Shout Factory spoils us MSTies in the best way. :D The Sandy Frank interview should be a real treat!

Sandy Frank interview! And continuing the new

This could also mean Volume XXV will come out late Nov.
or early Dec.- just in time for the holidays.

This is great news, but I am concerned about the inclusion of Snow Thrills and A Date with your Family. Does this mean that It Conquered the World and Invasion USA will never be released on DVD? Frownskins.

  14. fatbarkeep says:

Call me naïve, but I firmly believe that every MST3K will eventually appear on DVD.
It’s just a matter of the rights holders realizing that they can make much more money by releasing them to Best Brains.
Which of us MSTies has not discovered a new director whose movies we now seek out and even purchase sometimes. Coleman Francis is no longer languishing in the Land of Unknown Directors because of MST.
I myself have recently purchased every Gamera movie. Would I have done this without MST reviving them? A resounding NO!
Money will win in the end. It always does.
Then I will just have to buy all the KTMA episodes on-line and I will be happy!
Looking forward to the day, years in the future when I can watch them all in order.
    Believe!

I wonder if Shout! will dig out the respective promos for the episodes included on this set? They’re so short, they wouldn’t take up much space on a disc. I would like to see that trend continue on future sets, much like the inclusions of MST Hour Wraps for episodes that had them. There’s even some Sci-Fi era promos, although they are a bit repetitive. Still awesome, though.

If Sandy Frank is going to talk about MST3K that would be a big 180º turn.
But Roger Corman is still being a D*ck.
He really thinks his films are so precious?
I suppose the Universal films will be permanently off limits too.

Sounds like a nice selection, and am glad there’s more August Ragone- I found his previous extras really interesting.

It is strange/worrying to see isolated shorts as extras- although maybe they just couldn’t conceive of/afford any other extra-filler for Sword and the Dragon?

  21. MileHighManning says:

If the short is a extra on a box set, its not good for that episode. They got the rights for the shorts, but not the movie. The rights are coming to a point where they are starting to become harder to get of whats left. I know there are plenty left but now it might be a uphill battle.I hope not, but…

“Why release A Date With Your Family again when it’s already on the first shorts DVD?”

Because it’s out of print and not everyone managed to pick it up the first time. Everyone who feels the need to ask this question—get used to this. Eventually, you may even see previously released but out of print shows come out in a *gasp* new box set.

  31. “Eventually, you may even see previously released but out of print shows come out in a *gasp* new box set.”

That’ll be great news, as long as they’re in their own box set, or as individual eps like they’re doing now.

If they mix them with newly-released episodes like Rhino did with Manos, that would be horrible. Fortunately, Shout! has shown no inclination to do that sort of thing.

Off to preorder XXIV now — wait a minute! There’s a link right above here to pre-order. How convenient!

  32. Ethan V says:

Well, it’s four more not-very-good eps (I like the episodes with movies that are funny on their own, like Riding With Death and Horror at Party Beach, best.) but let’s get them out on dvd and out of the way for the next release. Which, here’s hoping, will contain High School Big Shot or San Francisco International!

SHOUT FACTORY just continues to please and impress. I have to say, I love the MST Wraps, and I’m glad we’re getting them. I was also thrilled with the latest release, and the COMPREHENSIVE collection of Comedy Central ads for the show. I was expecting a handful. I think they released ALL of them.

Could do without the documentaries about K Gordon Murray Meets Santo and whatever. I know other people will like them, but so far, they’ve been heavy on the “nerd” and lacking very much information. Just please scrape up EVERY LAST BIT of MST3K promotional stuff, and continue to release it all. More Turkey Day bumpers, for example, PLEASE. Debbie Tobin of Edina Minnesota may need a retrospective.

    Keep ’em coming, Shout!

    HEY PEACE FRIENDS!

is this the first time Shout has released shorts as bonus features?

cuz i’ve been kind of ignoring their single-title re-releases, but if any of them have shorts i’ll have to pick them up. thanks for the mst3k info.

  39. Colossus Prime says:

Awesome bonus material as always. Which is good because for me the last set had no episodes I actually like. I don’t dislike them, they’re just all middle of the road for me. Still I buy every single set because it is MST3K! But those great bonus features make them worth every penny.

    Pre-ordered via your link!

Random thought, and hopefully this isn’t too off-topic. Do you suppose that Shout would ever sell new PACKAGING for the episodes Rhino already has out? It’s a long shot, I know, but I’ve much preferred Shout Factory’s DVD art to Rhino’s, and if they just released the boxes with the Shout-style art, it’d look much nicer on the ol’ shelf while preventing a total double-dip. Does that make sense? In other words, Shout whips up just the DVD cases and art, you put your already owned Rhino DVDs in them.

Again, unlikely, but just an idea.

    @ Jay K.

No that makes total sense! I printed out Joshway’s awesome DVD covers in 2008, but since Shout has been releasing stellar packaging since the beginning, I’ve wondered if they could sell only their versions of covers and make the collection feel more cohesive.

Really looking forward to this set thanks especially to the Fugitive Alien episodes. The extra features sound terrific. I just watched “Incredible Mr. Lippert” on Volume XXIII last night and it was fascinating and well done. Shout! just keeps getting better.

As always, thanks for these great early updates on extra features and such here on Satellite News!

I always wondered what Sandy Frank had to say about MST3K after all these years. I guess we’re about to find out.

  46. ck says:

I also just watched “The Incredible Mr.
Lippert.” It humanized him warts and all,
including his anti-union views, but also made him
a generally sympathetic character who had some
real contributions to 20th century cinema.

Next up (I’ve never seen it) the apparently awful,
but perhaps also entertaining, Castle of Fu Manchu.

#42… Yeah, it’s probably a long shot and all, but I sorta agree! The design work on most of the Rhino packaging is… well, pretty bad. It’s like someone knew how to use Photoshop but didn’t know anything about good design. I guess some enterprising fan could try to match the outside covers.

  49. Severen86 says:

I can see why they’d release Snow Thrills, as It Conquered the World is not likely to get released (it is currently owned by Susan Hart), but A Date With Your Family? Not only has that already been released via Rhino, but it’s paired with Invasion USA, which, last I checked, was in the public domain. SHOUT! should have no problem at all releasing it. On the “Likelihood for Shout Factory Release List”, it is listed as “EXTREMELY-LIKELY”. What is SHOUT! trying to tell us here?

    Snow Thrills!!!!!!
Has anyone else truly stopped and taken this in? Just think, in the span of JUST a year or so-ish we’ve gone from “Sandy Frank deplores MST3K!!” to a Gamera box set, Mighty Jack and Fugitive Alien releases, AND a Sandy Frank interview.
Truly, these are good times.
