An open thread for reports from the Cinematic Titanic shows in Milwaukee Friday and Saturday night.

UPDATE: Rick Katschke checks in for OnMilwaukee.com with a report (and apparently didn’t get the memo that we aren’t using the Time Tube photo anymore).

I’d like to say to all that go to the shows– Cinematic Titanic, RiffTrax, or even Franks Cartoon Dump. Tell people about this site, when we saw C.T. in Boston I told this guy we met that was a big fan of M.S.T. and he said he and his son bonded over the show and never knew that there was a RiffTrax or Cinematic Titanic. When I mention this site his son looked it up on his iPhone and was checking it out while we were waiting in line for the meet and greet. I’d like to make up cards to hand out at the shows to get more people to see this great site, post pictures, and see more comments about the shows like the one last night. I remember saying last year how I wish more people would post stuff on here and someone said maybe a lot of people don’t know about this site. So when you go to shows let people know and maybe we’ll see more about the shows on here. I do want to say the shows they did last month did get a lot of peoples comments, it was great. And one last thing I hope a lot of the fans don’t miss the Manos show in August because they didn’t know about it. I’d like to see it be a sellout with people invading their local Cinema’s dressed in costumes from the movie. Can you say Rocky Horror midnight shows??? The poor person at the 7-11 telling his boss there’s a strange customer with really ” BIG KNEES ” at the Slurpee machine, and should he call the cops????

Attended last night in Milwaukee to a packed house and ROTFLOL fest. The movie Doomsday Machine is wonderfully kitschy and the commentary was truly gut-busting. I’ve posted a link to Satellite News at my Film Hound blog.

I’m going to tonight’s show. To clarify: The meet-and-greet is held after the show, right? I’m planning to bring my Amazing Colossal Episode Guide for signing.

Hey, Captn! You’re very right. I think I could do a better job of promoting this site as well, since I’m at almost all the shows. I’ll start tonight.

Sani – Yes the meet and greet is after the show. Don’t miss it! And please look me up at the show. I always love meeting members from this board.

#4-RAD: I have met you at the shows and had a great time talking with you. I’ve said before it was like talking to a friend and a fan of all these talented people as well as a husband of —- — —-. I also said if you came to Boston for a C,T. show I’d take you and that wife of yours out for dinner and drinks. I’d like to take you to a place in Melrose Ma. called Turner’s it’s a raw bar/ sea food place. They have a Lobster Cocktail that will knock your socks off, fold them neatly and remind you to take them when you leave. It’s not a drink, it’s Lobster ( tail, claw, & knuckle ) Martini with drawn butter and cocktail sauce. Lobsters have knuckles?? Yes they do and I can remember many a knight as a small child going to the ocean late at night and hear ’em cracking their knuckles, a sound similar to spring peepers. Also a little known fact, they don’t scream when you boil them but they do crack their knuckles while they’re waiting to get BOILED. DEAD LOBSTER CRACKING!

Had an extremely excellent time with both shows. Personally, had a lot more fun with Doomsday Machine, purely because of its insanity, but both movies were quite terrible, and riffed to oblivion by the crew. I especially enjoyed the pre-show act by Gruber, as it’s not every day that you see a man in his mid-50s lipsync “Shape of My Heart” perfectly.

Had a really good time at my first live CT show. The crowd was, uh, lively. Maybe “thoroughly sloshed” is more the phrase I’m looking for. Joel had to tell some guy in the front row to shut up several times, which was fun to see from a distance. I enjoyed the bits before the show — BTW, is there a list somewhere of the songs Gruber used for the “sing-along”? Frank got the crowd rowdier with his political commentary, and I’d say the crowd was about 80-20 in his favor. I had no idea what the movie was going to be about, but I was pleasantly surprised. Mitchell is one of my favorite episodes (though not because it’s Joel’s last), and this was a crappier story in the same genre. I stood in the (very long) line for the meet-and-greet afterwards to get my ACEG signed, and Joel was gracious enough to get a photo taken with me. I also picked up copies of Mary Jo and Trace’s books, so I have those to look forward to as well. I hope they come back through Wisconsin again soon!

Hello all! Fellow MSTIE reporting for duty! First of all, what a great show! The Titans are, as one might say, at the top of their riffing game. Saw The Astral Factor last night, and I’ll admit, after looking at clips of the movie unriffed, I was afraid this one would be dreary dark and dull. But have no fear, their movie choices haven’t faltered yet! This one has a little ‘Human Duplicators’ 70’s-ness, mixed with a little ‘Girl In The Gold Boots’ greasiness….loved it. Usually J. Elvis kills it and gets the most laughs (this is my 4th or 5th show…BE JEALOUS!) but I gotta say…tonight was Joel’s night. He had everyone rolling in the aisles. One side note, I line up perfectly with Franks politics but even I got a bit uncomfortable with the political tilt of the show these days…it’s CT live, not a rally. But aside from that I think it’s right up there with the best they’ve done. A couple call backs to the old cow-town puppet show got great reactions, and some ad-libbed lines even broke up the Titans themselves (MY favorte part of these shows!) Kinda bummed I won’t get to see ‘The Doll Squad’ until they come back around (probably next year) but I’m happy for the Titans as they SOLD OUT THE SHOW. Please come back. We love you. And release ‘Rattlers’ already, we’re dying here.

Something I forgot to mention: Even though the show was sold out, I somehow ended up next to an empty seat. I dunno why — I showered and everything! :) I guess someone ended up in someone else’s lap somewhere.

And it was an odd experience to sit next to two people who apparently refused to laugh or applaud the whole time, and who left in the middle of the standing ovation. Maybe it was a really awkward first date or something.

Slightly off-topic, but the time-tube has been retired? I guess studio DVDs really are finished then, huh? :\

    @10 and 11
Sampo linked to an interview with Joel a while back where he said they had abandoned the studio DVDs and the time tube concept. Shame really. I do like the live DVDs, but the studio shows were fun in a different way.

@12 thanks for the info, didn’t know that. I agree though, it is a shame. The live format is okay, but I really did prefer the studio approach.

I actually didn’t buy any CT DVDs until recently, and I have to admit I’ve enjoyed Cinematic Titanic much much more the 3 times I’ve seen them live. The studio DVDs are a little disappointing by comparison. Honestly, Santa Claus Conquers The Martians is the only one that’s gotten repeated plays. The live DVDs are much closer to their best work, and personally I enjoy them much more. I only wish they’d include the the pre-movie stuff on the DVDs, too.

Having not had the opportunity to see CT live [yet], every little bit added to the discs from the show would be gravy.

I agree with piratejoe. They need to come up with a ridiculous storyline for why they are no longer using the Time Tube, not the dumb real reason of “it wasn’t that funny an idea and we abandoned it”. We need closure.

Trace dismantled the time tube, since they didn’t need it anymore. He’s the one that made it,didn’t he? That’s what happened to it..As far as studio or live dvd’s,I don’t care as long as they’re funny! That’s the main thing, isn’t it? Though the studio ones were fun and all,the live ones are A LOT funnier and that’s the selling point. That’s what keeps me coming back every time..Closure? You need closure in a relationship, don’t you?

“One side note, I line up perfectly with Franks politics but even I got a bit uncomfortable with the political tilt of the show these days…it’s CT live, not a rally. ”

Exactly. I’m on the other side. I admire Frank a lot and it pains to see this side of him. I always knew it was there, but I feel this situation calls for the “can’t we agree to disagree approach.” After all CT is entertainment and should be an oasis island and a break from what has become a contentious day to day issue. I’m also disturbered by the 80/20 crowd slant in his favor. Does this mean he’s starting to run off those he’s disagreeing with? In the long run this isn’t healthy. Since we are talking about an artist owned venture, it isn’t a good idea to alienate roughlty half your audience when you are depending on roughly half your money coming from them. Or maybe the crowd split is more attributed to the fact this was in a left leaning city in the first place.

So to sum up just put the politics (to the point of pep rally) aside and lets laugh. If you are going to do it, it needs a Saturday Night Live type of balance.

    *Get’s off soapbox*

I saw Astral Factor only. It was great. I’ve heard good things but that said I was still nervous about this one. I’m not a big fan of Mitchel and figured this would be in the same vein and to a great extent it was. But the large sold out audience put the laughter is contagious principle in full effect and that helped so much.

As usual Gruber’s warm-up material was great. And the pre-warm up sing alongs were a great idea to pass the type to the official start of warm-up. I envy the people in NJ last week that got to see him riff. I’d like to see it. (It’s like my enjoying my favorite songs covered by other bands I enjoy.) You know what, I think he should be added to riffing. Since CT has proven five can riff just as well as three I bet they could fit in one more. So what if he was never on MST? He fits in and I bet most who have seen these live shows are starting to consider him one of the gang anyway. He’s earning it.
The scarred for life moment was the brief rear nuditiy scenes. And let me tell you the women were just as hideous as the male lead. In the 70’s NO ONE was sexy.
Loved the “It Stinks” Pod People callback. Predictably it got a great reaction.
    Joel was in rare form.
More and more I’m seeing Trace as the unsung start though. His sound effects were great and delivery is always solid. He seems to be the most shy member of the group and rarely never interviews and I’m yet to see any kind of long-form podcast interview. I’d like to get to know him better.

    Keep it up guys.

Oh I forgot to comment on Josh’s Elvis Costello. I love this more and more. It’s the second time I’ve seen him do the MST theme song on in the voice of Elvis (in addition to seeing him both live and hearing podcasts where he does other Elvis stuff) and I could stand to have an MP3 of it so I could hear it on demand.
After years of not knowing the guy, now that I’ve seen KTMA and seeing him with CT I really think of him as the prodigal and am happy he’s back!

Gary #22> I was born in 1973 so my memories of the 70’s are limited. I’ll give you Raquel and Ann Margaret. Donna Summer, Lynda Carter and Cheryl Ladd I’m going to say overrated. Heather Locklear I personally associate more with the 80’s. About half your list I’m going to say is before my time.

As for Stefanie Powers and Else Summer in this film. I’m going to have go with not sexy.

Sounds like 2 great shows. I wish CT would schedule shows in Atlanta. They haven’t been here since I knew they existed (the inconsiderate bums!), and I had to miss the shows in the Carolinas. :-(
