RiffTrax Partners with Hulu and Overcast Media for Pre-synchyed Riff Test

RiffTrax, partnering with Overcast Media and Hulu, have released a free beta test of a pre-synched streaming riff of an episode of the 1970s “Incredible Hulk” TV series starring Bill Bixby.

Check it out here (you will need a moderately fast connection, but I have crappy DSL and it works pretty well for me).

Watched the first 5 minutes. Not terrible, I guess, but leaves me feeling kind of empty ( and I’m a huge FilmCrew fan ). Maybe they’re trying too hard ? If I remember correctly I was also less impressed with the MST3K treatment of General Hospital ( another TV how ). Maybe I’ll try to choke the whole thing down this weekend.

Technically it worked great ( hyper-fast connection here at the office ), but I could do without the wrestling ads.

    (I watched the whole thing)

Great stuff one of the funniest things they have ever done.

I will definitely pay good money for this.

The first five minutes weren’t so great, BUT they got into the flow of it later on. Some GREAT riffing on this one. I’ve been a bit behind with Rifftrax for about six months, I guess I should fix that.

On the technical side of things, it worked really well. It was never out of synch (actually, I didn’t really understand that it even *was* synched until after I watched it. Not sure how they do it, but it works GREAT.

    More, please.

Any news on the DVD front with Rifftrax? I remember not too long ago someone mentioned a DVD of Rifftrax Shorts would be coming out (Conor maybe???) but nothing seems to be happening on that front.

I know I should get into the whole “download” thing…….

Why in the world would you do that?

Please, skip it. We don’t want anyone hurt.

This is a great idea! All those old t.v. dramas and “high-concept” shows just waiting to be riffed. MST3K did a great job on things like “The Master” and “The Gemini Man” when they were turned into movies so I don’t see how this can be a bad thing. I like the idea of it and look forward to more. Technically, it worked well for me (I have a cable connection to the ‘net).

I am ready for more of these– you keep riffin’ them and I’ll keep listenin’ to them!!

  7. Pemmican says:

I was a tad confused at the start, until I remembered that TV shows used to show you what they were going to show you before they showed you the show. I mean… the little preview segments.

If I understand the RiffTrax concept correctly, they basically just release an optional ‘commentary’ (which happens to be hilarious, of course,) so they won’t have to bother with silly things like “copyrights,” and “Sandy Frank.” More public domain (?) offerings such as this episode of Hulk would be great to get the brand name out there. I have a mid-range cable hookup, and the video loaded quite promptly, with no lack of synch.

I had to get organized for the rest of the day, so I also only viewed the first five minutes. I promise though, that I will not “choke down” the rest this weekend! I’ll take it as a suppository.

I have enjoyed many of the RiffTrax movies, but I just couldn’t get into this Hulk episode. I gave up after five minutes or so – (1) maybe because of the faster pacing of the beatdown scene? (2) maybe the episode sounded much louder than the riffing? I dunno…

But because of your comments above, I will give this a second try.

Dear God was this a thing of beauty. The first few minutes were a bit slow, but once the episode kicked into high gear the amazing jokes just kept coming. Loved The Incredible Hulk as a kid; I really hope Rifftrax does more episodes!
I love Hulu and I like having everything pre-synched (I’m lazy).
Favorite line: “Come for the comic book action, stay for Bill Bixby’s ‘O’ face.”

I don’t know which will stay with me longer… Mr. Corbett’s kind concern or the mental image of Pemmican’s non-standard viewing choice.

I dunno, the opening stuff during the opening credits has had me laughing pretty hard. As well as everything leading up to the “Fake Rocky” bit. Haven’t resumed it yet but I had to spit my soda back in the can for fear of choking.

As far as the embedding, I think it’s impossible with the Overcast Media part. Which is the riffing audio portion. I want to watch it in full screen too, but at Hulu the episode is of course without the Rifftrax commentary option.

Bill, Mike, if there is any way possible, please, please look into the possibility of riffing some Full House episodes or some modern soap operas. Both are goldmines.

Fantastic! This was a lot of fun. I like the format, and the show. Maybe they can do an episode of the live-action Spiderman show next? Dukes of Hazzard? Hardcastle & McCormick? Buck Rogers would be good, too….

This was a really good concept. Very funny and well done. BUT, what was this really a test of??? Surely if they do any more in the future I imagine they will not be free. Is this just a try at doing old tv shows? I’d love to see a Lost in Space episode.

  20. Captain Cab says:

Auntie Maim: Actually my username is A-Team inspired. “Captain Cab” is from the the episode “The Taxicab Wars'” one of Murdock’s many personas. Love Dwight Schultz. And yeah, A-Team and the others you mentioned are prime candidates. Whoa, while we’re on pandora’s box, I just had an epiphany. What could be as good or maybe even better than Danny, Uncle Jesse and Joey getting riffed to shreds? Howza bought Family Matters??? Talk about the Mike-as-Urkel skit coming full circle! Again I ask, any rifftrax folks reading these comments? ;)

  21. Captain Cab says:

Again I say to the good folks at rifftrax: The Hulk preview was great. Now, give me other riffed TV shows like Full House, Family Matters, A-Team, ect. and you’ll get my money whether it’s through Hulu or the standard RT format.

  22. Vornoff says:

OK, I’ll admit, this is the first full-length post-MST riffing project (Film Crew, Rifftrax, Cinematic Titanic) project I’ve looked at. Up to now it’s just been the trailers.

On the plus side, I did enjoy it. I think I’ll give some of the other material a try.

On the minus side, I *really* missed the puppets, the fanciful characters and wraparound story, and the host segments. It just seems – incomplete. Maybe I’m just too nostalgic?

  23. Matt D. says:

I just finished it, and overall it was great. The best riffs were about the comparisons to Rocky. “Say hi to your cousin Pauli.” It’s Adrien…a” and the like.

I heartily endorse doing older shows after seeing this one. And I only had one stutter of the Rifftrax, right after the first break. Other than that, the episode worked perfectly, and that is great because the regular Rifftrax is sometimes very hard to sync.

On another note, I already hate the new Blackberry Storm.

    Vornoff,
If you want a wraparound story, puppets, etc. consider downloading the ICWXP offering on the Rifftrax site. It is MST3K inspired, and IMO it was really funny.

I would agree that it doesn’t start off well, but it builds and builds until the brilliant ‘But David Banner…’ bit over the end credits which had me doubled over in laughter.

  26. Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk says:

I’m really trying to feel this, but I think they’ve either lost the magic or are just rushing these things out. There are a few good laughs to be had, which instantly makes it better than most anything on TV, but I really expect better out of these guys. One riff was like buying milk that had expired a year ago… Mike’s line about Rocky’s big chance being the first baseman for the DEVIL Rays.

Terrific stuff – I’d love to see the Rifftrax guys get to do some audio commentary on some of these cheesy, retro TV shows that are getting unloaded on DVD. Heck, I’d actually buy an A-TEAM DVD for one Rifftraxed episode . . .

Update: Okay, ye “5 minute” viewers, know thy loss!

Several other comments have pointed out that the riffing really picks up a few minutes in, and I agree. You’ll be treated to gut-busting laughs, and not just from the riffs. This episode of “Hulk” was apparently made only for the purpose of being mocked 30 years later. I wasn’t even an idea in my parents’ mind 30 years ago!

Keep it up, Rifftrax! There’s a lot of great b-grade television out there, ripe for the picking.

I’m definitely in the minority here but I thought this was one of their lesser rifftrax efforts. Like everyone else, I’m happy to see them doing a free riff and I’m happy to see them doing cheesy old TV like the Hulk, but that doesn’t change the fact that I thought the riffing was just average compared to their other trax.

I suggest riffing on ‘The Greatest American Hero’. With the way MST3K: Puma Man referenced it, it’d make a nice full circle to reference Puma Man.

  32. The video is still available. We’re not going to be taking it down and it doesn’t expire from hulu in the foreseeable future, so it won’t disappear. People have had trouble watching using google chrome, but if you’re using firefox or ie, you should be fine.

Be that as it may Friend Conor, all I’ve gotten today is the message : “This video is not currently available at this site, but you can view this and other Hulu videos at Hulu.com”

and I can in fact see the straight Hulk video there, but no soap at Rifftrax, at least at the link published above : rifftrax.com/hulk

Is there a way to play it in full screen or is it confined to that smallish box?

  35. Well it seems to be working fine for me and most people. Rather than posting your tech support issues here, I would recommend sending an email to the address specified on the hulk page or posting in our forum (there’s a link on the hulk page as well), where both our web guys and the guys from Overcast Media will be able to help you. Be sure to tell them what browser you’re using and what type of connection you’re running on as well as any other details about your system.

  36. FYI, after hearing that some people had issues with “this video no longer available” i tried out other web browsers myself.

IE 7 loading a white box, no message

Google Chrome got the “video no longer available” message.

So please use firefox til we get it figured out. Again, if you have an issue, I suggest posting in it in our forum or emailing, since the people who can help you (not me) are not reading this site.

The overcast guys are working on how to get a riffed hulu video to play full screen. It’s one of their top integration goals.

Conor @ Rifftrax : Note also that Friday, here at the office the Hulk/Hulu/Riff came though perfectly ( see #1 above ) but today ( Monday ) back at the office, I’m now getting the same unavailable message as I was getting at home.

not really griping, just trying to provide some potentially usefeul diagnostic info.
