Weekend Discussion Thread: Double/Triple Features

Alert MSTie Andrew noticed the same thing I did…

Thread poster Mitchell “Rowsdower” Beardsley, in our discussion of “12 to the Moon”, mentioned an Anthony Dexter triple feature. Tempting, but what are some other favorites? What shows just go well together? For my money, back-to-back eps “King Dinosaur” and “First Spaceship on Venus” go well together as they are not only similar genres, but are good examples of the show’s ascent. In that vein, “Boggy Creek” and “Track of the Moonbeast” remind me how great the final days were.

My double feature pick: Catalina Caper and Horror of Party Beach. Lots of teener action.
As for a triple feature –and, wow, if you can manage a triple feature of MST3K you are hardcore (but if you frequent this site, I guess you are) — I would suggests a tribute to 1987: Alien From L.A., Robot Holocaust and Space Mutiny.

What would you pick? Use any criteria you want.

An obvious one would be Mitchell/The Brain That Wouldn’t Die since it ends the Joel era and begins the Mike era. But I do enjoy the idea of a Manos/Incredibly Strange Creatures… double feature. Creepy hunchmen madness!

    Biker 3X = Sidehackers/Wild Rebels/Hellcats
Spider 3X = Earth Vs The Spider/Giant Spider Invasion/Horrors Of Spider Island
Spy 3X = Secret Agent Super Dragon/Operation Double 007/Agent For HARM
Super Hero 3X = Wild World Of Batwoman/Puma Man/Diabolik (Wiki lists him as an anti-hero comic character/close enough)
Something Fishy Around Here 3X = Revenge Of The Creature/Devil Fish/Blood Waters Of Dr Z
Excuse me, I think I have to go to Wendy’s for a Triple Baconator and Burger King for a Triple Stacker.

A Christmas Double Feature with Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Santa Claus.

For the triple feature, I’d go for a giant bug theme, with The Black Scorpion (scorpions are bugs, right?), Beginning of the End, and The Deadly Mantis.

I swear we’ve done a topic like this before. Sampo, you really should keep a record of the used topics and provide a link to it with each Weekend Discussion.

    Some obvious ones:

    Master Ninja I/Master Ninja II.

    Manhunt in Space/Crash of Moons.

    Some less obvious ones:

Revenge of the Creature/The Mole People, “it’s a veritable John Agar filmfest for you.”

City Limits/Zombie Nightmare, for that eighties bad film feeling.

For my troika I’d open the 9’th gate of hell with a Coleman Francis triple feature, all three films in order (Yucca Flats then Skydivers then Red Zone Cuba). I’d even make a little party of it where coffee and frog legs would be served, perhaps some beans if someone brings a can.

I’d pair I Accuse My Parents with The Violent Years, just to show how awful parents are, what with throwing money at their kids.

Then I’d have Daddy-O and Girls Town, for the wronged teen who proves his/her worth. Yay, teens!

I recently watched season one eps in “Commando Cody Order.” And I always feel a duty to the other Gameras if I watch any one of them. Same with the Master Ninjas, the Rocky Joneses and the early sci-fi’s that were all Universal B/W’s. they’re like comfy, feng-shui’ed furniture.

    The Horrors of Spider island
    Swamp Diamonds

(Honorable?) mention, since I can’t think of its title.
.What’s the movie where in the beginning
there’s a shot of a nude woman swimming in a water tower? Is it the one where Joel opens an

Very obvious, I realize: Earth Vs. the Spider and Beginning of the End for my double-feature choice. B.I.G. Bugs. ‘Nuff said?

I also love Sampo’s choices, though, so inspired by him I’m going to go with Daddy-O, Girls Town, and, yes, I Was a Teenage Werewolf for my triple-feature choice, since the latter features some cool “jive-talk,” and thus puts it in the vicinity of the other two (sort of). (Also, it seems to me that Mamie Van Doran could easily whip Michael Landon, and it would be fun to watch her do so.)

Just to see the differences in the series run, my triple header would start out with The Crawling Eye (101), then Eegah!(506), and to close, Diabolik (1013).

@#3 Sitting Duck — there have been some similar weekend discussion threads, but not this exact one. There was “Joel/Mike Double Features” in 2010, https://www.mst3kinfo.com/?p=7145 and then “Mixed Double Features” (one from Cinematic Titanic or Rifftrax and one from MST3K) in 2011, https://www.mst3kinfo.com/?p=10609 .

I have a Halloween theme that I’ve actually planned titled “Werewolves and Zombies and Heads, Oh My”– consisting of “Werewolf,” “Zombie Nightmare” and “The Thing That Couldn’t Die” I could extend it to a five-film extravaganza with “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” and “TISCWSLABMUZ”–but this’ll do for a start.

trickymutha–you actually have double/triple features with your gf on gentle winter days?–You are one lucky dude. Hang on to her man, she sounds like a keeper!

    (aka Andrew)
A fun-loving “Deathstalker” sandwiched in between the sub-heros Cabot and Watney in “Outlaw” and the highly-effective Ator and Mila in “Cave Dwellers” is nice. A marathon of the entire Shorts library is great! With Halloween approaching, “Tormented” and “Screaming Skull” over a never-ending bowl of Kit-Kats and Three Muskateers sound appetizing. The possibilities are endless!

Someone already mentioned “Cave Dwellers”/”Pod People”. That’s a great one!

  32. Green Switch says:

Untamed Youth, Daddy-O, and The Beatniks are great for a triple feature about 50’s angst and musical numbers.

Manos, The Incredible Melting Man, and Hobgoblins would be ideal for a worst-of-the-worst endurance test.

For a perfect whiny protagonist double feature, try Teenage Strangler and The Final Sacrifice. You’ll be convinced that there needs to be a TV show where Mikey and Troy team up to solve crimes in the wussiest manner possible.

  35. Bob(NotThatBot) says:

“The Thing that Couldn’t Die” goes well with “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” ’cause we get both a male and female perspective on not having a body, and two heads are better than one.

For a triple feature, I like “Teenage Strangler,” “Teenage Crime Wave,” and “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” because it’s important for us all to be more aware of the issues facing today’s youth of today.

Shouldn’t “Untamed Youth” and “Girls Town” be a Mamie Double D Feature? :-D

How about a Skipper Triple Feature with “The Crawling Hand”, “Angels Revenge”, and “The Giant Spider Invasion”, followed by a Professor Double Feature of “MST3K: The Movie” and “The Space Children.”

Maybe a Depressed Dad Triple Feature with “High School Big-Shot” and “I Was a Teenage Werewolf”, followed by the oft-referenced and much better “North By Northwest” (For those who don’t know, the same actor was in the crop-duster scene with Cary Grant).

And another, even though it might have been said already-
The Swinging Sixties Shindig Dance Party Double Feature, with Catalina Caper and Girl In Gold Boots….I’d throw in the party scenes from Horror Of Party Beach, Wild World Of Batwoman, Hellcats, and others, but this is full features, not a youtube montage.

Speaking of, I guess because they were all too expensive to get, none of the films referenced in the Rocky Horror song “Science Fiction Double Feature” were ever on the show, nor have they been done by Cinematic Titanic or Rifftrax. The more you know….

    For the record, they are-
The Day The Earth Stood Still
    Flash Gordon (serials or films)
    The Invisible Man
    King Kong
    It Came From Outer Space
    Forbidden Planet
    Tarantula!
