Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite In-Theater Sound Effect

Alert reader Robert suggests:

I was watching “Hercules vs the Moon Men” and Kevin/Tom, imitating Hercules, says “My thighs are really rubbing together today” and makes some apposite thigh-rubbing noises.

And I thought: How about readers vote for best in-theater sound effect?

Here are the rules for everyone to immediately totally ignore: Entries are limited to a sound effect performed in the theater by Joel/Mike or the bots.

My pick: The sound of Leonard Driscoll cleaning his filthy glasses in “Riding with Death.”

What’s yours?

Does ‘bra snap, toke’ from Giant Spider Invasion count?
I also love any and all instances of phone voice, especially Joel’s.

Servo making laser sounds when Mr. B Natural is pointing and saying the spirit of music’s inside every member of the audience (“In you! In you! In all of you!”).

For me it’s the opening of beer cans in Devil Fish. Makes me crave a cold one every time.

In The Sinister Urge, there’s a scene of a guy being interrogated in the police station. In the background is the sound of a police car going by with its siren on. Crow adds the sound of squealing tires and a crash to great effect.

My vote is for the squishy sounds made when Coke-bottle glasses wearing Green is massaging nightclub owner/toga wearer Chillas in Daddy-O.

Definitely 314- Mighty Jack. The scene where the leader of Mighty Jack is smoking his pipe. Joel and Tom are sounds like he’s getting high…so funny! Makes me laugh so hard!

I forgot which episode, but it’s a Joel. When Tom makes a fart sound and Joel says “I didn’t know you had fleshy parts…?”

That whole sequence. Love that! I guess 90% of the time when I pass gass that passes into my mind too!

Oh yes, in “Final Sacrifice,” there’s a shot of Troy looking for some landmark thing in the distance. He looks kinda squinty and snaggle-toothed at that point, and one of the bots makes a kind of snarly, growly noise as if the kid were some feral creature! Random and hilarious to me.

Then there’s the bit in The Movie where Cal’s in the automatic plane. As it disappears in the fog, Tom makes a great stuttering-crashing sound. “How It Should Have Ended”, anyone?

@60: Yes, the feral creature/demented Igor noise in The Final Sacrifice makes me laugh every time. They do a similar one with the bug-eyed minor character in Attack of the the Eye Creatures.

Let’s also not forget the she-Nosferatu hiss used to great effect in both Escape 2000 and Space Mutiny…

There is a not too noticeable sound effect done by either Mike or the Bots in “Jack Frost” when the Matchmaker tries to pair up Marfuska (sp?) with the “oaf”. All throughout this scene “oaf” sits at the table with his mouth open and someone in the theater makes mouth breathing sounds. It’s barely audible but it is there!

I love in “The Girl in Gold Boots” when Critter punches the oily right hand man of the bad guy and Servo says “Splash” each time.

A few memorable sounds effects that haven’t been mentioned yet:

Prince of Space: Servo doing some merry-go-round music whenever the object in Krankor’s ship that resembles one appears on the screen and adding some Japanese style music (I’m guessing something similar to an ice cream truck) when the PA car warning people about Krankor drives by.

Devil Fish: The added sound effects of Dr. Bob downing a six-pack during the scene where an audio recording of the title creature results in absolute silence.

“I think the coast is…*THUNK* OH NO HIS HEAD MUST HAVE FLOWN ABOUT 25 FEET!!”

(the squeaky sound of the guy cleaning the windows inside the tractor-manufacturer’s office in ‘Invasion USA’)

    And in Girls Town: ‘Gi-gan-tooorrr.’

  17. Also, I have to mention the sound effects of the heavy puffing and panting as the fat guy runs up the stairs at the end of “Wild Rebels.” That was the first episode I ever saw, so it has a special place in my heart. (sniff)

    @67

    – Oh man, now you made me remember another puffing and panting: that of the head of Novacorp in ‘Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.’ The burping and gasping for air that even cracked up the guys.

re: 67 & 68 – don’t forget the panting and puffing whenever Mitchell does a chase scene!

My favorite special sound effect on the show was when a character opens a door (say a closet) and Tom makes a very Frankenstein-esque “GRRRRR!” See it in Bride of the Monster and many other season 3 & 4 episodes.

Devil Fish: When the British guy plays back, what he thinks, is a recording of the monster, Servo makes the sounds of beer cans being opened and the beer being drunk.

I split my sides twice from onomatopoeic jokes in Quest of the Delta Knights: once when the Hanson kid throws a duffel bag and the cast makes a cat yowl, and the next when the soldier goon wearing a horned helmet gets hit by a laser beam and the cast goes “moo!”

The chicken noises in Prince of Space.

There’s also clown music in Home Economics story when one of the girls is making/modeling a striped “dress”.

    This Island Earth:
    “2486 parts.”
    *crunch*
    “485, sir!”

And sticking in one for CT:
In Danger on Tiki Island, as the mad doctor gets his speech in while a midget servant upstages him with a palm fan, the CT’ers add the “(whhff!…whhff!)” into the microphone

The movie The Brain Wouldn’t Die” (Jan in the Pan)
The doctor dad and son are operating on a body. The son says to the dad “Your patient may be dead but I’m going to save mine.”
Servo makes a “shooooooo, thddddd” sound like it’s an arrow making it’s mark.

Also, in the Touch of Satan, Melissa puts a curse on the cattle and servo says
“MOOOO..(thump) ugghhhh” as the cattle falls over dead.

Also, anytime the actors in the movies smoke a cigarette, Servo or Crow usually cough
