Weekend Discussion Thread: Ringtones

Alert reader Kyle writes:

I have a smartphone and I was looking for ringtones/alerts. I found an app that I like for tones and decided to look up MST3K, not expecting anything! But I did!! They have “It stinks!,” “Whaddya think sirs?,” Torgo’s theme, some buff names from “Space Mutiny,” and theme songs with Mike and Joel. Which ringtone(s) would people want? Theme songs? Quotes during the movie? Mike, Joel, TV Frank? The list would be endless.

The RiffTrax guys created a bunch a few years ago. I downloaded a few, including “Boil ‘em, mash ‘em, stick ‘em in a stew” from their riff of “The Two Towers.” But I currently use the Schnappi theme song as my main ringtone.

So, what ringtones do you have, and what would you want?

    I have the Master Ninja Theme Song as my ringtone. Hearing it go off always makes me smile, which is great because I hate phones otherwise. I keep waiting for the day someone hears it and actually knows where it’s from.

    I also have a couple clips from the Secret Agent Super Dragon song for my alert sounds. If someone leaves me a voicemail, it says, “Wai-wait a minute, you mean it just goes on like that?” And if I get a text it says, “WITH BOATS BRM-BRM-BRRRM-BRRRRM!” And yes, I am giggling to myself right now just thinking about it, because I am a ridiculous human being.

    I’m surprised that I’m the first one to say the jingle from the lead-out/lead-in to the commercials. It’s immediately recognizable, punchy, and is a perfect fit for a ringtone with its short duration and catchy, looping qualities.

    Whenever I’m in public and someone’s ringtone is a comedy bit that I’m not aware of or partial to, I always find it brain-searingly annoying, especially if it’s something like a text alert that goes off once every three minutes. I would shudder to think of the impression of MST3K I would be giving to people if I were to use a riff from an episode as a ringtone.

    It’s basic, it works, and more importantly, if it rings on a bus, it won’t get the strange looks from passersby that an inscrutable SyFy cult-fanboy phrase would get.

    I don’t have any cool ring tones, as I have a very basic phone. But, some of the ring tones I would like to have are:

    The theme song from “Operation Kid Brother” in Italian. We bought the CD of the soundtrack and the Italian version has an intensity that is lost in the English version.

    Another good one is the “poopie Suit” song from “Starfighters.”

    Or to annoy everyone, Dr. Watney’s incessant “Cabot, Cabot, Cabot…” from “Outlaw.”

    I actually heard the dance tune from “Catwomen of the Moon” as a ringtone at work, but the woman who had the phone had no idea where the music was from.

    I also have a co worker who has the ring tone “ring ring…ring ring… ring ring” in increasing volume. Cracked me up the first time I heard it.

    Three I’d enjoy:

    1. Butta-bean, we’re living in Deep 13. Ruling the world with our heads in a swirl and it’s keen, living in Deep 13.
    2. I don’t know nothin’ about nothin’ about no candy counter.
    3. You disgusting wooooorm!

    Joseph Klemm says:

    A few Rifftrax-related ringtone/alert sound ideas:

    -”Hanging Out With My Family” from Birdemic;
    -Kevin’s version of “Bella’s Lullaby” from Twilight;
    -Marv’s laugh from Tooth Truth (either the real one or Bill’s version of it during the closing credits);
    -Norman’s catchphrase.

    Danzilla "Cornjob" McLargehuge, Student of Kaijuology says:

    Oh boy, this is a good one. I’d really love the AWESOME dance hall music from The Creeping Terror! I’d dance to it and forget I was getting a call.

    Imagine a room of people hearing “mom… my nuts?” coming from your pants. Or a Tom’s Berry White voice and sleazy sax music saying “oooohhhhhhhh baabbbyyyyyyyy…”

    Priceless. Smile

    How about:

    “Hi Everyone, Let’s Pitch In ‘N Get Cracking Here In Louisiana Doing Right, Eh? Now Then. Hateful Rich Overbearing Ugly Guys Hurt Royally Everytime Someone Eats A Radish, Carrot, Hors-d’ouvres, And Never Does Dishes. Eventually Victor Eats Lunch Over Peoria Mit Ein Nauesburger Tog”

    or if that’s too long:

    “I didn’t steal no bike, neither!”

    "Hotcha!" says:

    A certain person I know would get, “You’re an Ugly, Stupid, Little Dummy” From Devil Doll as their tone. But then they’d probably call while I was in an important meeting and had forgotten to turn off the phone.

    All others would get, “It Stinks!” from Pod People. Just the thing to hear coming out of my pants.

    Bombastic Biscuit Boy says:

    ….as for nicer ringtones, either the haunting “Ken’s Theme” as harmonized by Crow and Tom

    I love Ken; he is my sweet friend and I love him…I’m so blue; ’cause I don’t think Ken loves me…I’m all messed up inside; I might have to off him…

    or the charming “Bicycle Song”…

    We’re gonna ride our bicycles; we’re gonna go and have some fun! We’re gonna fill our hearts with love; when we ride our bicycles!

    My notification alert sound effect is from Overdrawn at the Memory Bank: “‘I have a communication for you:’ ‘BITE ME!’”

    Tangentially related: My warning beep on my PC is “Ow, over” from The Clonus Horror, I think.

    GypsyHoney says:

    When I text my husband, his phone says, “I don’t get you.” in Gypsy’s voice. When he gets an email, Cowboy Mike yells, “We-hell HOLD ON THERE, PARTNER!” When he calls me, the ring is the Commercial Sign Vamp. We have also used the CT theme on and off for ringtones, ever since we heard Frank’s phone do it.

    Getting emails in the middle of the night can be pretty shocking if we don’t turn down his phone… Pain

    Riley says:

    I’d want the ringing telephone sound from 522 Teenage Crime Wave, with the riffing, “It’s that thing again! What does it mean?”
