Weekend Discussion Thread: Ringtones

Alert reader Kyle writes:

I have a smartphone and I was looking for ringtones/alerts. I found an app that I like for tones and decided to look up MST3K, not expecting anything! But I did!! They have “It stinks!,” “Whaddya think sirs?,” Torgo’s theme, some buff names from “Space Mutiny,” and theme songs with Mike and Joel. Which ringtone(s) would people want? Theme songs? Quotes during the movie? Mike, Joel, TV Frank? The list would be endless.

The RiffTrax guys created a bunch a few years ago. I downloaded a few, including “Boil ’em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew” from their riff of “The Two Towers.” But I currently use the Schnappi theme song as my main ringtone.

So, what ringtones do you have, and what would you want?

I like the song midway through RiffTrax’s The Guy From Harlem about being in Florida & looking at the boats-I don’t think the song has a name. I didn’t see it with the other RT ringtones.

I’m surprised that I’m the first one to say the jingle from the lead-out/lead-in to the commercials. It’s immediately recognizable, punchy, and is a perfect fit for a ringtone with its short duration and catchy, looping qualities.

Whenever I’m in public and someone’s ringtone is a comedy bit that I’m not aware of or partial to, I always find it brain-searingly annoying, especially if it’s something like a text alert that goes off once every three minutes. I would shudder to think of the impression of MST3K I would be giving to people if I were to use a riff from an episode as a ringtone.

Since the question mentions the RiffTrax fellows, and they respect the horribleness of “The Room,” I’ll mention that my text message tone is Johnny saying, “Oh, hi, doggie.”

From this discussion thread, I might have to steal some the ideas of others a bit: @itsspideyman: that whole speech; @Rob: “Torgo’s Theme” for his parents; @guest: hi-kee-ba; and @Mr. E: “Master Ninja Theme Song!”

For the super klutz in your life – I’m a Danger to Myself and Others
For the meat lover – Clay and Lar’s Flesh Barn
For the creepy co-worker you have to carpool with – Torgo’s Theme
How about the Ren & Stimpy music from – Century 21 Calling? PUSH BUTTON PHONING!! Sharon Lawrence’s speech about the future of phones would make an excellent hold message.
And one for me – “I like it when I get a call in my pants!” from Once Upon a Honeymoon

In terms of basic functionality, what’s wrong with “Hold it, you guys, (Clever Joel nickname for Dr. F and Frank of the week) are calling.”?
It’s basic, it works, and more importantly, if it rings on a bus, it won’t get the strange looks from passersby that an inscrutable SyFy cult-fanboy phrase would get.

That said, I second/third the Fake Phone Noise from Monster a Go-Go. :)
You’d think someone by now would have come up with a ringtone of someone saying “Ring, ring.”

my current “main” ringtone is from the end of Quest of the Delta Knights, Bobo exclaiming “would somebody please pass the syrup!”. I get the strangest looks when it rings.

I also made one from The Mole People.
Movie Boy: Kwitara, High (I actually start it right after Kwitara.but the reference is hard without it)
    M&TBs: Hi!

#24 I’d want an old-school phone ring, followed by the riff (can’t remember the episode) that went something like “WHAT IS THAT SOUND?!?!?!?”

Or better yet, Crow’s “WHAT FRESH HELL IS THIS??” from The Magic Voyage of Sinbad.

I also like the fake ringing from Monster A-Go-Go

I have Torgo’s theme and a piece of the original main show theme on my phone. Others that might be good would be pieces of some of the funny songs on the show like Wild Rebels Cereal, Sidehackin’, Toobular Boobular Joy, etc.

As for catch phrase jokes for ringtones, how about, “By this time my lungs were aching for air.”

I used to use “Doodly doodly doo! Shipment’s in!” from Mitchell as an IM alert years ago. If I were to make a ringtone today, I’d use something from Ennio Morricone’s soundtrack to Diabolik, which I adore. Sadly, an official soundtrack was never released, but there are a few versions of it floating around out there.

I hate phones. And wouldn’t want to be borrowed by one ringing in my pocket, car floorboard where it fell, or even vibrating next to my genitalia. But if it did I’d have to have Torgo’s music coming out of that sucker! :

  37. Slartibartfast, Maker of Fjords says:

I don’t have any cool ring tones, as I have a very basic phone. But, some of the ring tones I would like to have are:

The theme song from “Operation Kid Brother” in Italian. We bought the CD of the soundtrack and the Italian version has an intensity that is lost in the English version.

Another good one is the “poopie Suit” song from “Starfighters.”

Or to annoy everyone, Dr. Watney’s incessant “Cabot, Cabot, Cabot…” from “Outlaw.”

I actually heard the dance tune from “Catwomen of the Moon” as a ringtone at work, but the woman who had the phone had no idea where the music was from.

I also have a co worker who has the ring tone “ring ring…ring ring… ring ring” in increasing volume. Cracked me up the first time I heard it.

I think the “only Love Pads the Film” music from Sidehackers would work wonderfully: it’s very recognizable, and not too annoying right away, and it works with or without lyrics.

Also, the “baaaaaaa, ba ba baaaaaaaaa…” jazz vocals from Starfighters: with increasing volume, you’ll answer that sucker, alright.

Oh boy, this is a good one. I’d really love the AWESOME dance hall music from The Creeping Terror! I’d dance to it and forget I was getting a call.
