Weekend Discussion Thread: When the Riffers Interact with (or block) the Screen

Alert reader Susan suggests:

What’s your favorite instance of Joel, Mike, or the bots reaching up and touching the screen, as a sort of visual riff? Mine is in the classic “Space Mutiny” when Mike reaches up and feels our hero’s bulging biceps.

I want to include anytime the riffers were up out of their seats in this. My favorite is Mike and Tom taking a spin around the dance floor during “The Starfighters.”

What’s your favorite?

I like the Space Mutiny one. I like The incredibly Strange Creatures. .. .. when Tom jumps up to kiss the girl. It’s simple but cracks me up every time.

I definitely second the dancing during “The Starfighters.” For a big, dumb human, Mike has some moves. :-)

I also love the moment during the short Last Clear Chance when Crow puts his head down on the train track and says “I hear it coming!” Perfect setup.

@4-Mike does the pool cue thing in Girl in Gold Boots. He waited a long time to do it. :-D

I always liked it when Joel holds the cue cards for Dr. Bellows in Project Moon Base. Also when Joel rings Ator’s “doorbell” during Cave Dwellers.

  6. Weepy Donuts says:

Joel openning an umbrella in the theater to block some nudity was very funny. I’ve only seen this episode (City Limits?) once when it aired on Comedy Central, but it is forever stuck in my mind. It is also a great example of Joel’s charm as host. His relaxed delivery of the joke was incredible.

I want to second Joel’s opening of the umbrella during City Limits. They executed that brilliantly!

I remember Joel always used to get up in front of the screen, but somewhere along the lines probably mid season 3 he didnt get up as often (probably burnt out I guess)
I liked when he ran during the beginning of Warrior of the Lost World and when he went all the way back to the camera in Godzilla vs Megalon :-)

In “Women of the Prehistoric Planet” when Joel gets up out of his seat and resets the controls so the characters in the movie crash into the prehistoric planet. Also in “Pod People” when one of the hunters gets on all four behind another hunter and Joel tries to push him over.

Joel getting up and “growing” before the screen like Jeb Jaguar in “Godzilla vs. Megalon.”

Joel getting up to look over the lip of the Valley and saying “There’s really a lot going on down there,” in “Gamera vs. Baragon.

And of course, the “failure dance” in “The Day the Earth Froze.”

  15. Dark Grandma of Death says:

Right now I’m watching The Crawling Hand, and I’d forgotten how Joel stood up to interact with the scientists during their discussions: pacing back & forth, leaning against the wall, etc. I like it very much.

But my favorite is the brief moment in Angels Revenge, when all the angels are lined up by the van, making their plans. One of the girls (Terry, I think) has on a middy shirt, and Crow leans over and makes razzing sounds on her stomach – not once, but twice. It’s so quick, but it gets me every time.

In “Sinister Urge”, just after the raid, Mike pokes at the photographer’s rump while he’s sitting down and says something like “He’s a human bean bag chair”. Also anytime Joel or Mike punches some guy on the jaw during a close-up of his face.

I’m going to go with Joel going back to the camera during the film break in the last Commando Cody short and then running to get back to his seat when the real movie started.

    Don’t know if this counts…

Herc vs Moon Men: Herc (facing the camera) is about to drink the drugged wine, the queen looks away, and he dumps it out and Joel & crew act like it spilled all over them. (My favorite moment from that movie.)

Also, I think there was a scene from Lost Continent where Joel helps one of the rock-climbers by pushing on his hinder.

  23. marcusvermilion says:

There’s a scene in “The Crawling Hand” where the possessed astronaut keeps asking ground control to push the self destruct button as he can’t. Joel then gets up and says “I’ll push the button” when a shot of the button is shown.

In Cave Dwellers, during the opening credits, Joel looks over the black bar to see what’s going on. Come to think of it, there was a lot of screen interaction in that ep!

  25. I think it’s funny when the Titans bring out “the breast blimp” for Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks. Okay, I get why they’d have to avoid nudity for the show even on cable, but this was for home video only! I mean, why not just show the breasts? I guess just to have that ridiculous blimp floating around in front of the screen.

@#26, this week’s and last week’s discussion threads are similar and the answers/comments do overlap, but last week’s included bits where the riffers are seated and just talking. A fine line, I know. Both are funny.

I, too, really like the part in Gamera vs. Baragon where Joel appears to look over the lip of the valley and says, “There’s really a lot going on down there.”

I love when there’s a closeup of a lovely lady and someone – usually Tom – tries to smooch the screen. Especially when the timing’s off and he ends up kissing somebody else.

When Joel puts his hand over the lady’s mouth who is singing in THE ROBOT VS.THE AZTEC MUMMY,then take it off and puts it back on again and so on..

  32. I’m going to stick with my answer from last weeks discussion: Joel running down the road in WARRIOR OF THE LOST WORLD. Simple, but effective.

  33. John M Hanna says:

I love the “He’s got a gun!” moments. When a character on screen reaches into their pocket or purse and Joel/Mike and the bots hit the deck.

I also like it when something is coming towards the screen and they act like its going to hit them. A good example is in ‘Ring Of Terror’ with the cemetery gate swinging open.

Joel providing a dart for the “dartboard” in the lab in one of the Commando Cody’s (or was that Project Moonbase?), as well as some Batman sound-effects for when scientists and thugs mix it up.

Apart from the Failure Dance, though, can’t leave out Joel pulling in his arms behind the round theater-seat silhouette–“Look, guys, I’m a turtle”–from Robot Holocaust.

It’s so simple, but Joel strumming the strings of Iolae’s harp and going “Brrring” in “Hercules Unchained” makes me giggle like an idiot. :D Also count me in as another fan of Joel running down the highway in “Warrior of the Lost World”.

I also have to mention Mike measuring the size of Reb Brown’s arm in “Space Mutiny”. As I’ve mentioned before, my mom is usually pretty stone-faced during MST3K, but that made her laugh like hell.

I know they didn’t like messing with the film like when Joel puts his hand over the mouth of the Aztec singer, but I really loved those bits. I dunno if this fits, but when Joel & the bots roast wieners over the lava in Black Scorpion. There’s also the Fly, judgie, fly! bit with the Wapner standup.

  42. The Right Oily Drifter says:

I can’t remember which episode it was, but one time Joel was pretending to juggle the little bits floating around the screen. And in THE ROBOT VS THE AZTEC MUMMY, it’s hard to notice, but Servo sneaks a peek up the woman’s skirt.

During one of the fight scenes in Commando Cody, Joel thoughtfully brought his own Batman-style BAM!s and BIFF!s

Then, in Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy, Joel put his hand to quiet the singing a couple of times during the flashbacks. Even Crow commented, “Okay, that’s better!”

This is a fun one! I just watched Wild Rebels and completely lost it at the end during the scene where the bad guy pulls out his gun and points it right at the screen and, more specifically, at Tom! Joel and Crow scream “AAAAHHHH!!!! SERVO, SAVE YOURSELF!!!!” and Tom flies screaming out of his seat! It was completely out of the blue and timed perfectly. It about killed me! :)

  50. Joseph Nebus says:

Mine is a subtle, silly thing, wholly irrelevant to the action: after the mid-show segment Joel brings a bowl of cereal into the theater during Hercules (502) and eats it to the commercial break. I have no explanation for why this bit of business so works for me. But when I do a MiSTing I look for chances to have some irrelevant but humanizing bit of business going on, especially for Joike.
