Official Shout Press Release on Next Set

I don’t think there’s anything new here, but here’s the official press release from Shout about the next set:

Available on DVD November 26th from Shout! Factory
Mystery Science Theater 3000: 25th Anniversary Edition
5-DVD Box Set Features Previously Unreleased Episodes
Moon Zero Two, The Day The Earth Froze, The Leech Woman and Gorgo

A man and his puppets in space watching cheesy movies … sounds crazy, no? But here on the Satellite of Love you might say each one of us is a captive audience, watching gifted writers and performers try to make sense of it all without losing their minds. Why do we continue to treasure this oddball TV series? That can be answered in one word: funny!

On November 26th, 2013, join us as we celebrate 25 years of cult-movie craziness with Mystery Science Theater 3000: 25th Anniversary Edition from Shout! Factory. Housed in a collectible silver(ish) tin, MST3K: 25th Anniversary Edition is a five DVD set that features the films Moon Zero Two, The Day The Earth Froze, The Leech Woman and Gorgo. Also included are all new bonus features including the three-part documentary Return To Eden Prairie: 25 Years Of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Life After MST3K: Mary Jo Pehl, Ninth Wonder Of The World: The Making Of Gorgo (MST3K Edition), Last Flight Of Joel Robinson, MST Hour wraps, four exclusive mini-posters by artist Steve Vance, and more!

As a special gift to celebrate the silver anniversary, we’re including a bonus DVD in the set with a double feature of two long-out-of-print fan-favorite episodes. Yes, we said we weren’t going to get each other gifts, but we just couldn’t help ourselves! On this special occasion, we brought back two key episodes that were the shot heard ’round the MSTie world: Joel’s last episode, Mitchell and Mike’s first episode, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. We know, we shouldn’t have, but nothing says “love” like a favorite episode forever memorialized on DVD.

Titles Include:
Moon Zero Two
The Day The Earth Froze (with short: Here Comes The Circus)
The Leech Woman
Gorgo

Bonus Disc Double Feature
Mitchell
The Brain That Wouldn’t Die

“Leonard Maltin Explains Something” is the greatest and most appropriate name for such a documentary. I just wish it was to explain every decision he’s ever made, from movie reviews to his beard.

I didn’t know the release date before, so that’s good to see. And just confirming the “Gorgo” release! Who’d a thunk such a thing could happen?

I’m so excited about the Mitchell/Brain That Wouldn’t Die bonus DVD. I lost my copies of those two when they were released on Rhino and they’re such important and hilarious episodes. It would be awful if they ever went out of print. Joel’s last episode (and maybe the show’s finest hour) and Mike’s first are simply must-haves.

“The Green Slime” pilot would have been a great bonus feature for a 25th anniversary set.

I’ve looked at the website of the Better Business Bureau and tried to find a place where you can give praise to a company. There wasn’t one, but there should be. I wanted to tell them that Shout Factory is a great company and possibly one of the best companies of all time.

I just can’t believe it’s been almost 5 years since Shout released the 20th Anniversary set. Where has that time gone? Not long now until the 30th Anniversary ….

  11. jay says:

I agree with Alex, hard to believe it’s been five years, seems like just the other day it was announced Rhino had lost the rights and Shout! began to wow us with their releases.

Very glad to see the bonus disc will be in the box so I can order from Amazon and not have to pay full MSRP on Shout!’s website.

I love Shout Factory and feel a little bad about always getting these sets (and anything else by Shout) through Amazon rather than direct, but c’mon. Fifteen bucks cheaper and free shipping? Sorry Shout. I wish we could do away with the whole artificially inflated MSRP to offset phony resale price reductions system, but that’s capitalism. Gotta grease all the gears or the whole machine breaks down.

All this praise for Shout! For the most part I love em too.. BUT, I had problems with my single DVD release of “Beginning of the End”. Is the picture supposed to flicker from time to time? A few others from Shout! do that too but that was the worst one. :( I’ve mentioned this in comments here before but never got an answer. Does everybody’s do that…? Or just mine…? should I rebuy/try to return it? :(

As for this release… GORGO! Oh yeah… I’ll also use the opp to pick up the movie only release.

Disc 5 is an awesome bonus. My DVD copies of these two episodes are taken from my original Rhino VHS tapes. Glad I refused to re-purchase them initially. Thanks Shout!

radioman #13 – Brian from Shout! answered some similar questions about (I believe it was) “Beast of Yucca Flats” or possibly “Dead Talk Back” over in the Shout! forum (which isn’t there anymore due to jack-assery). He mentioned that the masters have simply aged and some occasional distortion has resulted. He was asked if it was possible to clean them up, to which he responded (basically), “Yes, but it would only be marginally better and isn’t really worth the effort”. I do not own the Shout! version of BotE so I cannot tell you if the glitches are just in yours or not. It seems that the problems with BoYF and DTB were more widespread.

  19. radioman970 says:

Thanks Gizmo. Well answered. It does remind me of some of my old VHS home movies, when I went to make them digital, some had similar effects. Just age…. Well, I hate age for so many GD reasons! lol

I’m jazzed about every Shout! release, but THIS one is something else entirely. The bonus disc double-feature alone is worth getting excited about (especially for me, who was a dope back in the day and never picked up Mitchell on DVD, opting to stick with my Rhino VHS), but you ALSO get Moon Zero Two (one of my personal favorites from S1), the immortal Day The Earth Froze, AND the “lost episode” Gorgo?! PLUS another of the early S8 eps that at one point few thought would get an official release? What else can I say but “sign me up!”

This will make a mighty, mighty fine Christmas gift (to myself, I mean).

kylehg #21 – Thanks! Wait… I thought the bonus disc was only included if you bought from Shout. Why does the Amazon entry say it contains five discs?

#24 I agree with you,I was looking for a figurine too.
But hey, Shout has been good to us fans and the sets and Bonus Disc / Features are always cool.
And #30 I prefer to pre-order. The last set came three days before it’s release date and I think it gives them an idea how popular the sets are
when fans of the show order early.

#12 I will never order sets from Amazon again. When I ordered Vol.XXIV it came from some outside person. It had the posters jammed inside each
case and they were all bent and folded. I was really mad and sent it back and ordered it from Shout.
Now Goshzilla we have to talk. Last week it was the “Glaze on the Doughnut” Now it’s “Grease all the gears or the whole ( hole??) machine breaks
down.” I just hope everything okay with you, if not maybe someone can help you with the grease and glaze thing.

Every time I’ve preordered from Shout!, I’ve gotten it several days to a week early except for Volume XXV(? The one with the Radar Men From the Moon bonus disk, where they failed to anticipate so many preorders of it). When preordering elsewhere, I get them several days to a week late…

I’ve never had a problem with any of the Shout! disks except for Soultaker, where the last 3rd was unwatchable. I bought that at a store, though, and the replacement copy was fine. I had a couple issues with Rhino disks, where my new copy of 7 was missing one of the disks and Volume 10.2 had Swamp Diamonds with the Phantom Planet label.

#34: Are you sure you didn’t order from an Amazon seller or company working in conjuction with Amazon instead of Amazon direct? Amazon isn’t allowed to use outside fulfillment of orders without expressly stating so on the order page.

I’m glad I’m not the only here who is excited for Mitchell & The Brain That Wouldn’t Die. I don’t own any of the previous Rhino releases except for Volume 10.2 — I just got back into buying and collecting the box sets very recently. I ordered 13 total volumes during the recent Amazon sale and I’m in heaven. So many of these Shout! volumes have episodes I’ve never seen before. This is a highly-anticipated release for me.

I didn’t see a link to order from Shout! or Amazon that would allow this site some credit or whatever. Did I miss it in the past several weeks? Thanks.

  38. GizmonicTemp says:

The only problem I’ve ever had with Amazon is one time my credit card wouldn’t process, of which they notified me via email. Per their recommendations, I hit “resubmit payment information” (which changes NOTHING, just sends your information again, kind of like pressing the elevator button a bunch of times), and it worked.

1010 – It Lives By Night (MGM)
    1012 – Squirm (MGM)
    1013 – Diabolik (Paramount)

So…what can we conclude from this list? It is very likely that we will get all titles owned by CBS, MGM, Universal, Warner Brothers, Kit Parker, and Wade Williams. The Public Domain films should come through with the exception of The Screaming Skull which seems to have problems regarding the music in the Gumby short.

Next up would be possible films. If Shout! can work their magic with Warner Brothers, MGM, CBS, and Universal, hopefully they can persuade other major companies to join the bandwagon. So, for now let’s consider the following owners as possible: LionsGate, Columbia/Sony, Paramount, Olive Films, Dark Sky.

Then there is the “when Hell freezes over” category. Our usual friends are here: The Samuel Arkoff Estate, Susan Hart, Roger Corman, and Toho. Sooner or later they will give in…right?…RIGHT?…

Finally, there are 3 films where the rights’ owner is unclear – especially Pumaman. We can only hope that the forensics division at Shout! will solve this mystery.

  42. Luther Heggs aka Number 6 says:

“Finally, there are 3 films where the rights’ owner is unclear – especially Pumaman.”

The secret of who owns the rights to Pumaman was written down in the personal journal of Donald Pleasence – who played Dr. Kobras in the film.

Unfortunately, at his own request, the document was cremated with him after he died. (Something about “the door to that dark cold space must be finally be closed. These secrets I’ve revealed must be burned if our world is to remain hidden from The Old Ones.”)

There was also a lot of dirt in that journal about Gumby’s annoying taste in music.

Loran Alan Davis #42 – Thanks for the updated list. However, let’s not forget that Gamera was on the “Hell Freezes Over” list at one point. And then… XXI. Peacefulness.
I’d say that the best way to find out who owns “Pumaman” is to go ahead and release it and then see who whines. :-P

  44. generalist says:

    @ 42

Loran (all) how many sets do we legitimately thing Shout! can muster?

Based on the list, there are 54 episodes not yet released. No one believes all 54 will come out, obviously.

  45. Generalist: I think most episodes will eventually be released. Shout! already has arrangements with CBS, Warner Brothers, MGM, Universal, Kit Parker, and Wade Williams. That’s a lot of episodes right there that we should be getting. Public Domain episodes should not be a problem except for The Screaming Skull. Considering that Shout! has managed to get four major studios on board, I have faith that they will get the others eventually. The problem will continue to be with Susan Hart, Roger Corman, The Samuel Arkoff estate, and Toho. However, keep in mind what Gizmonic Temp pointed out: there was a time when Sandy Frank was on the “when hell freezes over” list, and look what happened. That just leaves 3 titles where the rights’ holders are uncertain. So, to answer your concern, I think that, in time, almost all episodes will be released – but there might be some that never get released.

Lots of love to Shout! for trying so hard to please us fans! I do have a question–I don’t know much about Shout! other than my experience with these sets. Does anyone know if Shout! only produces DVD/Blu-rays or if they also produce printed media? Because a revised and complete Episode Guide book would be a phenomenal bonus for the next big anniversary, or anytime as it’s own stand-alone product!

@29 Gorn Captain: Beginning of the End problems.

Mine is the Shout! version. I can’t remember specifically. I’ll get the DVD out sometime and post about it in the future. It’s usually a fuzzy or flickering line across the screen. BotE is the worst. But I’ve seen it on a few other Shout! dvds.

  48. Gorn Captain says:

@30 Ok. I’ll keep my eyes open for it.

Lost Continent probably has the most damaged video I’ve seen on any Shout release. The master tape must have been really chewed up at some point. In one of those kooky coincidences, that was the episode that gave me the most headaches when capturing all my S-VHS tapes several years ago. In retrospect, I’m glad I finally nailed it.

  49. generalist says:

All of this discussion about tape degradation makes me think of something I have wondered for years. Where are the master tapes stored? I assume they are in Jim Mallon’s possession. I wonder because I have read that (for example) many tv shows are stored in underground salt mines.

Most of the instances I have read about that though a network show that is owned by a corporation is referenced. AFAIK, Mallon alone owns the rights to MST3K.
