I never really found this running gag to be all that funny. I mean, yeah, it’s pretty funny the first time you see the episode, but not on repeat viewings. And when I see all the nerds online listing each and every name they use in the episode in forums here and there, the whole thing just loses whatever appeal it may have ever had.

But then again I don’t think I gel too well with most MSTies. For example, I think the Forklift Song from the Fugitive Alien episodes is incredibly annoying and that Pod People is one of the worst episodes (perhaps even THE worst, it’s head to head with Killer Shrews in my opinion) of the whole series. I like Space Mutiny though. Just not the “tough guy/many names of” running gag and all the nerd-o’s who ruined it.

I agree Matt. They just ran it into the ground, just like saying “Rosdower” for a thousand times.
And we got it, that guy looks like Santa Claus and the other one looks like Sting. WE GOT IT THE FIRST TIME.

LMAO Some people legit get bristled because the Big McLargeHuge Phenomenon is so associated with a Sci-Fi era episode that they have to bring up every Comedy Central/Comedy Channel/KTMA instance where it appeared earlier.

I am from the north of Detroit and back in the ’90’s there was a guy on the radio (I think he was from Texas) that went by the name of Mr. Manly. I still have tapes recorded from back then. Funny stuff.
Anyway, he did kind of the same thing when he came up with manly nicknames. My favorite being “Ratchet Thunderstud.”
Anyone else ever hear of him?
    Just curious.

@28 – I’ll admit, “Big McLargehuge!” still cracks me into silliness for unknown reasons. :)
But the constant worship of Space Mutiny lines just emphasizes what’s happened to post-SyFy MSTie fans (the ones too young to have grown up on CC episodes), and what’s happened to the fandom. What used to be an appreciation of clever riffs and poking of movie absurdities has now become a rockstar-recitation of holy words and phrases In Praise Of Mike, with almost no context back to what made the episode so amusing or the movie so riffable in the first place. The same M&tB that pokes at “geeky” fans of any other overexposed franchise makes good and sure its fans are cult-backgrounded on even the most minute minutiae of their own hit.

One of the reasons I’ve fallen off of Weekend Threads is that most of them are now different ways to repeat the same few SyFy-era rock-fan “incantation” lines over and over:
Ie. “Q: What oil would YOU spread on Joe Don Baker?” “I’d spread a stew, of corn, chili peppers and onions…”
Now, there’s nothing wrong with favorite lines–But they have to make some kind of SENSE: A CC-era fan can quote “Watch out for snakes!”, and while that wouldn’t necessarily be hilarious in and of itself, it at least hints back to the technical incompetence of the Eegah! characters wandering around in the desert, and disembodied voices out of nowhere. It’s not what we remember, it what we were laughing at that a line is supposed to remind us of. Repeating a phrase over and over does not make it more “sacred” or the repeater more “loyal”, it just does what M&tB think they can get away with on the show: Parrot some poor nerd’s goofy line back in his face long enough like bullying high-schoolers, trying to hang an instant “trademark” on him and turn their victim into some easily categorizable object, than to put any decent thought or effort into it.

(Okay, so I digress, but seriously, how often in the last year have we had a thread that WASN’T some cult-of-character/line “What Season 10 characters would you elect for governor of California?”)

Yeah, and “Lady in the Water” already used Cleveland Heep.

(Maybe we should get Shyamalan to think up a few of these, he’s certainly got an imagination for ’em, anyway.)

Love the snobbery. I don’t like a thread so I imply that my dislike of it makes me a superior Mistie. You should really just relax and appreciate that some folks might have different likes and dislikes — such as my son, who dislikes the tendency toward prop-oriented humor of the Joel-hosted segments — than you. I’m not a particularly frequent contributor here. The moderators, in my view, do a great job of keeping this sight fun. If a thread doesn’t appeal to me, I pass on it, but don’t feel a need to assert that my passing on it makes those who do participate it some lesser form of fan. But hey, whatever gets you through the night…..
