I honestly think it would have been more interesting if Rifftrax had done this one, since we’ve never had the chance to hear Mike and Bill riffing on this one.

As is, I think I’ll just save my money. Especially since the trailer isn’t too funny.

  3. Gonna hafta pass on it for now. Might pick it up at some future date. Not griping, it just doesn’t hold the genre appeal that the previous titles held for me.

Aww, the £ to $ exchange rate has been getting worse all year. “Wasp Woman” cost me £11.20. This one cost £14.45. It better be proportionately funnier

CT COULDN’T FIND ANOTHER OLD CRAPPY PUBLIC DOMAIN CHRISTMAS MOVIE TO RIFF ON?!!! I AM NOT SURE IF I AM GOING TO SPEND ANOTHER $18.00 BUCKS ON SANTA CONQUERS SPACE MARTIANS. THEY DID A GREAT JOB ON IT THE FIRST TIME IN SEASON 3, 17 YEARS AGO ( #321 ). I AM STILL CONSIDERING BUYING THIS BUT NOT RIGHT NOW. I DON’T KNOW WHY JOEL HAS TO RIFF ON THIS MOVIE AGAIN. I AGREE WITH ‘mrpapercut’, MIKE AND BILL SHOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO RIFF ON THIS MOVIE. I BOUGHT THE OTHER CT DVD’S WITHOUT HESITATION THE FIRST DAY.

I bought the previous 4 CT movies but I’ll be passing on this one. I wasn’t even that into the MST3K version of this. I just don’t think a silly children’s movie is really great riffing material. Now a psychotic children’s movie, like the Mexican Santa Claus, now that’s another story.

  13. Bought it at like 12:01 am. Sold a few decently-priced items lately, so caught up on the last two as well (which I had to skip due to money crunch).

This release, plus MST3K 20th, plus Rifftrax DVD, plus DeepDiscount sale, plus Amazon sale, plus HKFlix sale…

Will I have any money come 2009 at all?

I think I’ll wait for the next release and then order this DVD with the other one. CT probably did a good job with this, but the MST3k version is excellent.

  15. MikeK says:

And another thing, the only person in CT to not have any hand in the MST3K episode of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is Josh Weinstein. And, if RiffTrax did it, then Bill Corbett would be the one out of the three riffers who didn’t work on the MST3K version.

So either way, I doubt it would any kind of big deal.

I’ll buy this as I’m a bit of a completest but I have to admit that on the MST3K side this was one of my less favorite ep’s because of the original movie. Now season 5’s Santa Claus is a mind trip that I watch several times a year, I’d like to try to watch it without the riffing even.

I wish their’d be some sort of Christmas box set, I count at least five Christmas movies when you stretch the premise: Santa Claus Conquers the Martins, Santa Claus, Mitchell (remember the Christmas tree in bad guys house), Lassie (same thing, Christmas as a backdrop, and Jack Frost (that’s really a stretch I know)

any others? I’d like set up a mini marathon for my family.

  17. The Bolem says:

Any others? Well, SciFi Channel sometimes timed Space Mutiny as a Christmas ep due to all the Santa Jokes made about the ship’s elder/commander:

“So, finally Christmas comes to Santa!”

    “Ho-HO–OHHHHHHH, I’m shaking like a bowl full of jelly…”

More scenes than the MST3K version. Hmmm, maybe there are more scenes with the character, Droppo. Now who could resist that? I ordered this DVD a few minutes ago. After seeing the live show in Minneapolis and finding it was worth every bit of the effort it took to get there from Maryland, I’m sold on CT and will buy every episode. Great stuff!

Because I liked MST’s version, I will not go for another version of this. And I don’t think they should ever do any MST episodes over again.

It smacks a bit of elitism, even with most of the same people doing the re-riffing. No thanks.

  25. The Professor says:

Well, this one will be real interesting to see. I can’t say i agree with the idea to re-do an old episode (a good one at that) because it basically begs to be compared to the older episode. It almost seems like they are trying to say, “Hey! We’re just as funny as classic MST3K and we do it without Mike or Kevin!”. Maybe i’m reading too much into it but either was, as it stands, CT isn’t ready to stand side by side with classic episodes.

But, still, CT has been worth my money so far and i’m buying this one too…with just a touch of hesitation.

“Whoa, I can’t believe he dropped the M-bomb like that!” and “It’s official, they’ve made me hate fun” got the biggest laughs from me in that trailer. I think this’ll be worth a look, just to see how they did it differently this time around.

Oh heck, I got some PayPal credit and I ordered it. I’d like to watch this at Christmas time anyway. There is over a decade of life experience and culture for the CT crew to draw from, so I guess it should be good. At least I know that the movie isn’t boring.

For JRB (#29): I actually think The Professor said it better with his response, so I shall quote him.

“It almost seems like they are trying to say, “Hey! We’re just as funny as classic MST3K and we do it without Mike or Kevin!”. Maybe i’m reading too much into it but either was, as it stands, CT isn’t ready to stand side by side with classic episodes.”

This is what I was getting at. Now perhaps they just truly think they have good enough material for a second go at the movie. But honestly, just from the trailer, I didn’t find those riffs very funny, or at least not as funny as the original MST3K ep.

But hey, again as with Rifftrax, they can do as they wish. I just don’t personally find it to be a good idea.

I downloaded it and watched it. It’s great, the new riffs are fine and honestly it’s almost alarming how different it feels. I own the original with The Essentials collection and I downloaded and watched this today. It’s also nice to see moments that were cut out of the MST3K version because CT plays the whole movie. I love both and honestly from now on it’s gonna be a toss-up which one I throw in the DVD player. Also, I always go the download route. I have a stack of DVDs and it’s also able to change it to iPod and other formats, besides being cheaper. Cases are nice, but so far I have all 5 movies and have 2 four disc cd cases I will fill up. That is until I make a slim dvd-case for each and do them like the 20th Anniversary set with a box to hold the cases. I’m an art major and have the time I guess.

  34. John Seavey says:

I’ll be picking it up–I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t at least a little bit due to completism, but I like the people doing the series and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that this will be worth my ten bucks and one blank DVD. :)

I think they might have wanted to wait a bit and establish more of a catalog before redoing an old MST3K ep, but I understand that when you need a bad Christmas movie in a hurry, “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” is pretty hard to pass up. :)

And after asking Joel about this at DragonCon, I don’t think it’s elitism at all–he said that they’ve always thought that you could go in several different directions when writing a joke about a particular bit, and that it’d be interesting to take things a different way than the first time around. I don’t think he’s trying to “top” himself and the rest of the MST gang, just see if there aren’t other ways to explore the same source material.

So they’re redoing “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians?” What’s the controversy? The SOL gang re-riffed a lot of the KTMA eps (most- if not all- Sandy Frank extravaganzas) for Comedy Central, and I think we’re all the better for it. My order for the new DVD is in, and I can’t wait to see how they revisit the material.

You want controversy? How does everybody feel about the RiffTrax animations on their new DVD?

I know I’ll be ordering it.

I ALSO LOVE THE IDEA OF SHOUT FACTORY PUTTING OUT A BOXED SET OF OTHER CHRISTMAS-THEMED EPISODES FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

I use capital letters for subtle hints.

As for the Mike, Kevin and Bill animations? Creepy and disturbing. Why is Bill a parrot? Not something I associate with going to the movies. Maybe a cup of soda or a box of Snowcaps would be better. But certainly no less disturbing.

    Definitions of Elitism:

    1. practice of or belief in rule by an elite.
    2. consciousness of or pride in belonging to a select or favored group.

–so basically, the problem I’m having here is the word elitism is being tossed around with no reason, unless Joel etc believe their original choice of the movie was too good to ever be topped…and they look down on other movie choices.

I hate to harp on this, but this word has been dragged through the mud by politicians lately, and it needs to be straightened out.

WITH REGARDS TO THE KTMA EPS BEING REDONE TO THE COMEDY CENTRAL ERA, YOU REALLY CAN’T COMPARE IT TO THIS SITUATION ( SANTA CONQUERS THE MARTIANS ). MOST PEOPLE NEVER SAW THE KTMA’S BACK IN 88/89 BECAUSE ALOT OF US ARE NOT FROM MINNEAPOLIS. KTMA’S ARE TERRIBLE ANYWAY BECAUSE IT WAS A BRAND THING/NEW IDEA. JOEL AND THE GUYS WERE TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING INTO THIS SHOW WHICH WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE. THE SHOW TOOK OFF DURING SEASON 2 AND WAS PEAKING FOR THE NEXT 9 YEARS. THANK GOD THEY REDID TIME OF THE APES AND THE GAMERA FILMS! I THINK THEY SHOULD NEVER REDO OLD MST TITLES! THERE IS ENOUGH B MOVIES OUT THERE. I APPRECIATE EVERYBODY’S FEEDBACK AND I WILL PROBABLY EVENTUALLY BUY SANTA/MARTIANS ~ CT STYLE.

Wow, what a bunch of ingrates. These people give you another excuse to watch Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, without using a single riff from the other episode, and do it all while making it even funnier than the original, and you’re complaining (most of you sight-unseen)?

As the man once said: Oh bite me, it’s fun.

    41. We’ll see Josh. This time I may just downlaod it. After the first 4 very weak CT outings, I simply can’t justify the cost of hard copy. Maybe I’ll even get to watch it this weekend. oh joy. lucky me. I can hardly wait.

  42. Smog Monster says:

Well, I can’t really complain since they riff more of the movie than the first go around. Plus, like I initially said, MST3K went light on the old martian in the pink room, the fight scene between the leading Martian & Voldar, and Santa Claus returning home to Earth when they previously said he couldn’t earlier in the film.

Remember: Redo does not mean undo.

Nor did Mary Jo. Although a whole Buttload of others were contributers. In fact, I don’t ever recall that many contributing writers listed in one episode before. Even in Season 6.

I’ll probably go ahead and get this. I would have rather they done Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny but….maybe next? (No, I won’t resort to all caps..some of you guys need a ram chip tranquilizer!) First of all, I want to support their endevour. Secondly, the riffing should only get better and better. Seventeenthly, I really liked Legacy of Blood and thought it was as good as, say, your average fourth season ep. One hundredthly, I think the orginal is just a so so ep (B+ on my scale but barely) and don’t see any reason why they can’t do a better job.

Watched the the CT version a bit ago with a friend after watching the original earlier. Some excellent riffs by all but Frank had a ton of killer ones that really had me on the floor. I smoked out so I know i missed a ton.

    Oh and Dave Allen.

  48. My problem with this is that they could have spent time and energy doing a movie that *hasn’t* been riffed — there are so many of them out there in the world that are begging for it.

With RT only doing “new” films (although I do buy all the shorts) CT is my only source for old film riffing. And I really can only watch this movie so many times — seeing it done with new riffs is an interesting idea but doesn’t hold much appeal for me.

I’ll *probably* pick it up because I do want to support Joel, but in general I think riffing a previously MST3K movie is a Very Bad Idea — not at all like redoing the KTMA episodes (which were done badly). I’m sure Joel isn’t trying to suggest here the original wasn’t good enough and needed improvement. More likely they wanted to have a seasonal offering and this was a quick and easy way to do this (because I’m sure he and the others were very familiar with the material).

Too late. Rightly or wrongly (probably both), I already have. Obviously the Best Brains Bunch saw that the Sandy Frank oeuvre could yield more comedy gold with another pass through the material. The CT crew came to the same conclusion with SCCTM. Was it worth the re-visit? I’ll let you know after I watch it.

Sure, I’d like fresh movie fodder. We all do. But I’m willing to give this experiment a chance.

    On the other hand…

    Steve Vil said:

Steve echoes my feelings, but omits the most damning word of indictment: distracting.

And thanks, Earl B., for answering the musical question, “Why is Bill a parrot?” The answer is elegant in its simplicity, and incredibly obvious once you hear it, but I totally missed it until you pointed it out.

Well, I just watched it, and it’s hilarious. Doesn’t suffer in comparison at all (except for the charming host segments in the MST version, which they really aren’t trying to do here.)
I’ve thought the CT episodes have been getting progressively better, and I think the riffs here are every bit as good as in the MST version. Now I have another riffed movie to put in at Christmas. Ho, ho, ho!
