Weekend Discussion Thread: Memorable Hats

Alert reader Sue suggests:

I remember when Easter was a time for, among other things, breaking out new hats in order to be fashionable. Yes, I’m old. No, I don’t want to say how old. At any rate, how about “Best/Worst Hat or other Fashion Accessory in a MSTed Movie”?

But in an MST3K, my favorite hat and hat riff are from “The Deadly Bees,” during the inquest: “Objection! Stupid hat!”

Me, I gotta go with the hat Mary Beth Hughes wears when singing in “I Accuse My Parents.” “Now she’s wearing a table centerpiece on her head!”

What’s your pick?

Have to second yours, Sampo, that was the first hat that came to mind when I saw the thread title.

Can we go with Melissa Strickland’s hair from The Touch of Satan? I’m convinced that was an elaborate headdress and not real at all.

The silly hat Jimmy’s mom wears in I accuse my Parents. Why, it makes the Thin Man crack up.

Dr. Miller in “Eegah!” proved that even guys can sport a stylish hat. Granted, it’s a Pith Helmet and he looks rather dorky in it – but still, that has to count for something! And honorable mention goes to Prince of Space’s helmet, though I am not quite sure if that one counts as a true hat…

How about the leather football helmet the chief evil Moonman
wears in Radar Men from The Moon. Btw, a highly informative
film—showing gravity on the moon is the same as Erath, there are
usually significant cloud formations above the Moon, and that
Earthwomen will be important astronettes (to cook for the men).

  7. Leave Crow T. Robert Denby Alone says:

While others look like they can’t get the cookie jar off their heads, Ro-Man wears the helmet, instead of the helmet wearing him.

Oh, and the whole crew in RMFTM seem addicted to hat wearing.
They all sport various styles, the woman that ’30s/’40s skin
covering type, the others a type of sailor’s cap (I think).

The greatest fashion statement via a hat definitely belongs to Rommel! I am going do do some Sidehackin’ in his honor this weekend!!!

The hat that George ( ? ) wears to the costume ball in Samson vs the Vampire Women. It inspired quite a few riffs, including “you know what they say about men with big hats, huh?” And I love the cocky delivery of “she is totally attracted to my hat…”

Do helmets count as hats? If so, I’d go for that thing Zor wears when we first meet him in Cave Dwellers. For runner-up, Cody’s flying helmet in the Radar Men from the Moon serial.

We never got to see the grandest hat of them all, the one that was going to be taken to the hat party in “Teenagers from Outer Space” (and a few other movies too).

Along with the Bat-Helmets from Deathstalker, I have to nominate Jack Palance’s enormous (and upon reconsideration, rather naughty-looking in a Georgia O’Keefe way if you know what I mean) headpiece from “Outlaw of Gor”.

    1. The Crayola crayon hat from Catalina Caper.
    2. I would love to have the Jiffy Pop hat from Sidehackers.

How could I have forgotten the table centerpiece on the singer’s head from “I Accuse My Parents”? Good call. For helmets, which in my mind qualify as hats/headwear, WTH was up with those helmets from either “Prince of Space” or “Invasion of the Neptune Men” (I always get those mixed up — someone please straighten me out) that looked like they had a record album stuck in them at a rakish angle? “Anyone seen my record? Anybody??”

    5. The Crown roast hat, and the lazy Susan hat.
(From ?????????????) Please help, old Ross is getting squash rot and shouldn’t

wear a hat on his mushy head.
I have said to people I watch so many of these movies it’s like one big movie to me.
I get everything mixed up with the invention exchanges and what movie they go with
and what season the movies are from.Except the first season with Josh.
Old and in the way, ready for the home I am.

I loved all the various accessories the bots had Mike wearing as Coatimundi Man. What cracked me up was that Mike totally dug it! That is, until he decided to eat the leftover cold sesame noodles. Also from “Why Study Industrial Arts” – why the hat, why not a kicky beret?

The See-Through hat Jane wears when she first meets Tony in “The Pumaman”. I know those were a thing, but man, it makes my nose itch just looking at it.

I’d also like to nominate Beth’s Helmet Hair from “The Skydivers”.

And finally: do you happen to have any blue plastic pith helmets?

Let us not forget the brunette henchwoman’s pink-confetti-frizzie hat from Operation Double 007 (aka Operation Kid Brother) that she wears at the airport in Malaga.
    “Who’s your favorite clown?!” “BOZO!”
    “It’s Bernie from ‘Room 222’!”

(What can I say? I think she’s neat.)

I’ll go with a tie between Jack Palance’s hat from “Outlaw of Gor” and Catherine Schell’s Gumby headdress in “Moon Zero Two”.

And then there are those Rambrandt hats from “Chicken of Tomorrow”. Um, hold it…

How about that guy in Werewilf? There’s no way that stuff he had could qualify as hair! He had a whole hat rack of those things, one for every scene.

Also, the bootback’s puffy too-high-on-his-head hat from Prince of Space.

first hat comes to mind is the wad of cloth on the head of the boy in Quest of the Delta Knights.
second had is the one Mary Jo wears in the sketch at the end of Final Justice when her character tries to initiate fun dress up day. (the one where Bill walks by in Leatherboy attire, she thinks it’s his costume, but he is actually on his way to a date)

  39. Dropo221 says:

How about the headgear that Dropo and the rest of Martians wear in “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians?” Chochem the ancient doesn’t wear one, so I think it can be classified as a hat and not part of the Martians head. It looks like a Steve Canyon crash helmet spray painted green and a goose neck microphone attachment or something like it along the side.

So many great ones have already been mentioned, so I’ll go with the guy wearing the Razorbacks hat at the football game in BOGGY CREEK II — more specifically, the riff he inspires: “A Razorback hat lacks the quiet dignity of the Cheese Wedge.”

The Derby Hat Guy at the end (also, beginning) of The Deadly Bees. His sudden presence at the end of that movie just wouldn’t be as puzzlingly funny without the derby.

  43. Slartibartfast, Maker of Fjords says:

I nominate the totally fashionable, but functionally useless hat Kay wore in “The Bride Vanishes.” Shaped like a beret, at a 90 degree angle, it is more likely to function as a sail in a storm rather than a hat.

Also, in “The Castle of Fu Manchu, the hat the woman was wearing when she went to the doctor’s home/office. The scene that Frank and Forrester were riffing in the final host segment.

  44. Depressing Aunt says:

The fez worn by the woman in “Fu Manchu.”

Jane’s Snoopy aviator driving cap in “Puma Man.”

Little baby sunhat, worn at a rakish angle, in “Prince of Space.”

Gypsy’s idea of taking her own head and wearing it as a hat in “Amazing Colossal Man.”

Lots of good hats on Operation Double 007. My favorites are Neil’s tam o’shanter, Sister Mary Mayhem’s habit, and the henchbabes’ (and Bots’) nautical pompon floppy hats (I know!).

And in Fugitive Alien, the Starwolves’ helmet/wavy red hair combo have to be among the most bizarre.
