Weekend Discussion Thread: Questions about the MSTed Movies

mattygsmail writes:

Hi, while watching “The Rebel Set” last night I realized that the question “who is Merritt Stone?” was not really answered (Tom’s Poirotesque effort notwithstanding – is Poirotesque a word?). It made me wonder about other unresolved questions/plot points that were left hanging in other episodes, like Lt. Lamont in Space Mutiny – was she actually dead or just mostly dead?

I’m going to use matty’s suggestion as a jumping off point and expand this a bit: What questions do you have that a MSTed movie should have answered, but never did?

Mine is: Was Peter Graves’ character in “The Beginning of the End” ever prosecuted by the authorities, or sued by the city of Chicago? His sloppy experiment DIRECTLY CAUSED the invasion. I want him frogmarched (or grasshoppermarched) out of his laboratory!

What’s your question?
——————————–
(Oh and, for those of you who don’t know: Dark, slender and gaunt MERRITT STONE played the spider-eaten dad Pete Flynn in 313-EARTH VS. THE SPIDER; a clergyman in 414-TORMENTED; a consoling cop (uncredited) near the end of 319-WAR OF THE COLOSSAL BEAST; and the “King Grady” in 411-THE MAGIC SWORD. Note that he does NOT appear in 419-THE REBEL SET!)

I wish that The Brain that Wouldn’t Die would have told us what happened to the model who was almost murdered, and then carried off by the creature at the end. Did the creature set her down safely somewhere so that she’d be found by a passerby? Did the two of them, disillusioned with humanity, get married and live off the grid? Or maybe the creature went back and rescued Jan in the Pan, and the three of them went into business together…?

At the end of Invasion U.S.A., it turns out the whole invasion was just a hypnotic trance. Does that mean that the window washer at the tractor factory wasn’t really an enemy agent doing a bad Peter Lorre impersonation? a Last Judgement up above.

Oh, and does every graveyard have an entrance to Hell? And if so, is there also an
entrance (maybe in a tree?) to Heaven?

And did the Zombie Lady ever get elocution lessons? I mean, she spemds her whole life in some country north of the U.S. and still has a rather strong accent, eh!

How did the marriage go with Michelle and Critter in Girl in Gold Boots? Did Critter actually go to war? Or did he stay a draft-dodger?

Did the astronaut-captain keep the rock in his junk drawer and go to a nice federal prison in Phantom Planet?

Did Roxie and the Arch-Hall character stay together after Eegah was killed? Or did she decide later that Eegah would have been the better choice?

    SO MANY QUESTIONS! AArrgghh!

To HuggyBear: I’ve actually seen Squirm all the way through without Mike and the bots. The worms eat Momma close to the end of the movie. They took that part out for the MSTed version. So one of your questions has an answer!

To be fair, some movies did answer a lot more questions but the scene got cut out by MST3K or the TV version they were using. Like the question in Mitchell of “Wasn’t John Saxon in this movie.” The answer was “Yes. He was working with the same crime organization as all the other villains, tried to run over Mitchell with a dune buggy and died when it didn’t go so well.”

I don’t know whether it was answer in the original version, but in Pod People/Los Extraterrestrials “Why was Trumpy’s mother putting stars on the forehead of everyone she killed?” I’ve figured out that this is the same constellation that Trumpy points out on the star chart, but I don’t see the point of leaving it on your victims.

What was the deal with Pod People? I mean- did anyone actually figure out the lyrics to that song from the beginning? Why was Trumpy the lone non-maniac of Team Visit Earth and Murder People? Did they have an actual mission and/or visit Earth under their own agency? (I kind of want to think they were exiled or escaped criminals or something, but that was done better in The Alien Factor, although come to think of it those were zoo creatures.)

I’d also like to understand some of the Seatopian dialogue/backstory/mythology from Godzilla vs. Megalon. Joel and the Bots talk over a bunch of it, and it seems like that’s one movie that makes more sense unriffed (and probably even more with a better translation, which is pretty common for Toho movies of that era). I mean, I think I have some stuff figured out- Roxa is the younger brother of one of the other two guys, who are inventor-types; Seatopia is kinda sorta acting in retaliation to the (accidental) destruction of their territories by atom bomb testing and they’ve got some relationship with the aliens from Godzilla vs. Gigan (and thus get to borrow Gigan), but a lot of the details elude me. I really need to pick up an unriffed copy of that someday.

    2) What exactly was Bob Evel doing that was changing the future and why was he so unconcerned about the “12 Monkeys” future
    he was creating?
    3) Considering how Terminator II was caused by studying remnants of the Terminator, why wasn’t the future changed
by 1776ers studying the airplane crash remnants and Bob Evel’s double body around the tree? For one, Ben Franklin and Thomas

Whenever I watch Angel’s Revenge and the scene where they are about to smash Stick’s head with the tire of the raised car, they stop and then vote whether to kill him or spare him. They of course vote by either placing an full or empty gun cartridge in the can, full is “death”, empty they give him a “second chance.” The vote turns out to be 6 empty cartridges and 1 full, and to give Sticks a second chance. Now what I’ve always wondered is, WHO actually voted to kill sticks? Right off I exclude Kako because she actually stops the car from smashing his head in, saying maybe they should give him a second chance. And Maria agrees with her. That leaves Michelle, April, Elaine, Trish and Terry. I then exclude April and Elaine because they are a teacher and a cop, and you would expect they would have “civil service” morals about indiscriminate killing. Which then leaves Michelle, Terry and Trish. Ultimately, I side with it being Trish, the high school kid, because she is overly gung ho about being involved in this vigilante group.

Being an Arkansan myself, I actually researched this just now. The movie came out in 1985, and judging by the color of the opposing team’s uniform they were playing the Texas Longhorns, who they would have played in Fayetteville that year so it checks out. If that’s the right game, they lost it. I know you probably didn’t actually care to know that, but there it is anyway. ;)

    In no particular order:

What the heck happened to poor Trumpy at the end of “Pod People?” Did he survive? Find some weird way to return to his home planet? Become a forest-dweller? Was he later mistaken for Sasquatch?

What is the origin of Manos (the god, not the movie itself)? Was Manos part of a pantheon? If there’s a “god of primal darkness,” does the film’s canon include gods of other things? Perhaps Manos’ arch-rival, Piernas, god of modern light? What was the Master’s origin, for that matter? How did he wind up in El Paso? What’s up with the Valley Lodge sign leading to his house? A trap, or a mistake?

Why does the movie Monster A Go-Go exist? I mean that question in cosmic sense.

Thinking of the bullet vote in Angel’s Revenge, I thought maybe Maria might have been the one who voted yes, the reasoning being that when they had Sticks hanging upside down so Keiko could “revoke his membership” (as Servo put it), Maria said not to go easy, as he was the guy who got her hooked. That’s just speculation on my part.

Another question, again in regards to Angel’s Revenge: At the end of the movie, as two of the girls are leading Jack Palance’s character into a fenced area, Elaine says “I’ll call Miller, he’ll take care of everything.” We never see this Miller guy in the MSTed version, so the question is, just who is Miller? Was he a detective on the police force that Elaine knew? Was he the Charlie or the Bosley of this Charlie’s Angels ripoff?

  38. ‘Manos: The Hands Of Fate’ brings up a lot of questions:
How long has this cult been there?
What is Torgo’s backstory? Was he always a goatman or did something happen to make him that way?
Who are the Master’s wives? Are they other people who wandered into the Valley Lodge?
Is the Master immortal? He seemed to shake off bullets pretty well.
Are the police just ignorant about the fact that a lot of people go missing in their jurisdiction?
Won’t Mike and his family eventually be reported missing? I’m sure someone will notice they haven’t come back.
Are the police in on it and just let the cult have the occasional wanderer to be sacrificed?

Oh, Space Mutiny. If MacPhearson knew all the countermeasures, why was Kalgan torturing Leah to get the countermeasures? Were the space pirates aware of Kalgan’s plan, or was he just hoping they wouldn’t blast him to astrodust as well? Why did MacPhearson choose a staff meeting to bring up his dissatisfaction with living on the Southern Sun? Was he just trying to out Nerdy McWhimperton? And what about the engineer who had “done well” after they kill McWhimperton? Was his story supposed to go anywhere? Do we even see him again? Why did Billie Jean King’s glasses magically appear back on his face after he was thrown over the railing? Why are there two different actors playing the guy getting softened up? Were the Enforcers not worried about Roddy McDowell spoiling their plans? Was he in on it as well? How did Big McLargeHuge know that Kalgan’s turning of the Enforcers was complete, just by hearing the number the old guy gave out? I’m sure there’s many more.

Why do so many shorts posit supernatural entities and extra-dimensional realms obsessed with dull trivia and ordinary, every-day objects? Why would God and Satan be so concerned with the marketing of bread products to feel the need to directly intervene? Why is there a cosmic entity devoted solely to coiled springs? Is EVERY person who’s interested in music visited at some point by a manic hermaphrodite? Do the spirits of the Founding Fathers often appear to young people and explain to them how to budget their money? And who are those mysterious voices who follow children and young teens around commenting on their actions and telling them to straighten up their rooms?

I simply conclude that Michelle was NOT aware that it was Sticks you beat up her kid brother. There is no mention of her being aware of that fact. Even in the unedited version of the film it’s not mentioned that she became aware of that.

Miller was a character in the film who was completely edited out of the mistie version. He played Elaine’s superior officer on the police force and all the scenes of Elaine reporting to him about the “7” group were cut out. He was played by Neville Brand.
