While Daddy-O is an AIP film, it is not one owned by Susan Hart, widow of AIP co-founder James Nicholson. Those are considered the real untouchable, never-gonna-happen episodes.

Teenage Crime Wave is the only one I haven’t seen (excluding some of the KTMA eps which are…well you know). The disc trade I got years ago had a glitch, and the first half was so depressing, I never bothered to get a replacement. Maybe with clearer a/v, I’ll finally be able to make it through. And the others are faves that that also happen to be some of my worst-quality dubs. Hooray!

  22. An admirable set, but nothing I’m burning up to add to my collection. Still yearning for Horror of Party Beach, The Incredible Melting Man, The Human Duplicators, She Creature, The Thing that Wouldn’t Die and some of the Susan Hart titles, though I suspect that she will relent before too long.

A footnote to the announcement: the discussion a couple of weeks ago with Daniel Griffith’s posting of a picture and notes about “MST related” interviews at what appeared to be the home of Roger Corman brought speculation that some of his films would be next. But he directed none of these four. The two AIP films, however, are part of a group of seven owned by the Samuel Arkoff estate and licensed to Lions Gate; of the remaining five, four were directed by Roger Corman. So could an MST3K vs. Roger set be next? (It’d be a logical pre-Christmas choice.) Let the rumormongering begin!

goalieboy82: why is it so hard to get her film right.

I only know what I have read online and there doesn’t seem to be a clear answer. She’s apparently fairly well off, so it’s not just about money imo. She is known to be very litigious though. This is from a piece on her that you can find online here (http://www.yakimaherald.com/news/livenews/1620475-8/how-a-wenatchee-native-went-from-60s-swimsuit)

“Since fully securing the rights to her films in 1994, she’s guarded them in a series of federal court copyright lawsuits — some of which have entered legal textbooks as courts defined “fair use” of filmed materials. Hart wouldn’t discuss her lawsuits specifically, but said, “Let me put it this way: I defend my rights vigorously, or I will end up not having rights.”

From what I’ve read, Nicholson seemed to have gotten the short end of the stick when it came to AIP. If you believe Hart, Nicholson was the creative one and the real brains behind their success. Nicholson lost some shares in his divorce from his first wife which left Arkoff as the majority shareholder. Things got strained between them and Nicholson left. Some time after Nicholson passed away, Arkoff sold AIP to Orion. Hart eventually got the rights to a number of films, but only after the courts got involved.

Based on that history and reading between the lines, I sort of understand why she might be very defensive about the work of her late husband. But that’s just my opinion. Shout! probably has approached her about the film rights, so I’m sure the truth is out there somewhere.

Yay! Earth vs the Spider! Is that the last of the great Mr. BIG classics?

As for the others, meh. Nice to see Daddy-O, but Teen-Age Crimewave never really did anything for me, and Agent for HARM at least has (Peter) Marc Richman. Hope Shout! can get an interview – he’s still with us, and I’d love to see what he thought of the MSTie treatment.

Another great set. I have not watched 313 in some time as my copy is marginal. 307 is classic Joel, 522 has the doughy guy song, and, 815 is pure gold- Mike on trial and Bobo and the little Amish boy. This one will be the highlight of my summer, unless FXX has another Simpsons marathon.

WOW!!!! This was more than worth the wait! Arkoff is finally ours for the (official) viewing, and the other films are a surprise as well! Teenage Crimewave means they also cracked (correct me if I’m wrong) Sony, which means 12 to the Moon will be in an upcoming box set too! So it looks like Shout! got not one, but TWO big companies on their side!!!! The future looks bright, and I eagerly await a preorder link! :-D

I’m excited about Daddy-O and EVTS since my VHS copies of those episodes were poor quality. My copies of Teenage Crimewave and Agent for H.A.R.M. are top notch but I’m glad they are getting the proper treatment. I can’t wait to see Crow as Daddy-O on the cover art with his pants hiked up!

So glad for the Season III episodes that were very unlikely for over a decade. Now that Shout has these films, I would LOVE for some to get HD / blu ray releases :)

We need to push to get Colossal Beast, Viking Women and oher Arkoff titles such as Day the World Ended on blu ray so badly !

Drawing a blank here… did either Daddy-O or Earth vs The Spider have MST Hour Wraps? I think at least one of them did, if not both. If you’re reading this Shout… PUT THOSE WRAPS ON THERE!!!!!!!! It would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you, won’t you? ;-)

  36. Professor Gunther says:

Very Close to the best set ever (IMO). Earth Vs. (or is that Verses?) the Spider is one of our very favourite episodes (it’s the kind of movie that defines what the show is all about), Daddy-O is SUPERB, and AGENT for H.A.R.M is another great, great episode. Lately there have been those stray episodes that don’t thrill me (like Space Travelers); HOWEVER, Teenage Crime Wave is top-notch (I just have to be in the mood for fifties-style Melodrama).

So hot and ready, man, and hike up your pants, we’ve got movie sign! Whoooooooo!!!! That’s pretty extreme! :)

Teenage crimewave is one of my favorites. He wouldn’t touch you terry your dirt. 12 to the moon is the only episode left in season 5. agent for harm is the first episode I seen on scifi era episodes. I also looking for earth vs soup oh I mean vs the spider. Daddy-o is the movie-o. This is a really great volume. I guess the next volume after this would have Viking woman, teenage caveman, the undead, and something else.

This is great! The set itself is fantastic, and it gives me hope that The Undead, The She Creature, and at least a few of the great remaining unreleased Season 3 episodes may make it to a Shout! relese in the not too distant future. Just terrific news!

you know we also were certain that Gamera would never see the light of DVD and not only did Shout get the rights to all five MST Gamera movies but they also released them all together in a nifty collection.
I think we don’t give Shout factory enough credit.

I don’t think it’s that Shout “forgets”, I think they only include MST Hour wraps for episodes where they know those segments exist. I think some MST Hour Wrap segments are actually lost.

And hey, Earth Vs. the Spider is the episode where we finally learn what happened to Dr. Erhardt!

Wow, no wonder the negotiations for this one took longer than usual! We’re really getting down to the wire now – only a few sets left until the whole series is complete. Those Hart titles are gonna be a bugaboo, but I could really stand to have a cleaner copy of Attack of the The Eye Creatures, so I’m holding out hope.

Can’t believe we’re so close to having the complete Season 5! Is 12 to the Moon an expensive film? I know Design for Dreaming is public domain, so that’s no hurdle.

12 to the Moon is owned by the same guys that own Teenage Crimewave, so the path is clear for Shout! to complete Season 5 any time they want! :-D

SUPER EXCITED ABOUT THIS SET!!! OH DAMN, THE CAPS LOCK IS ON–WAIT, NO IT’S NOT!!! I TRULY AM THIS EXCITED ABOUT THE UPCOMING SET!!!

Seriously, though… 307-Daddy-O & 313-Earth vs. Spider, finally two super great & important scores (especially based on RIGHTS issues)–accompanied by two other fantastic episodes! Definitely worth the wait! Of course, assuming the audio & video are good on these, and Jim didn’t leave these 4 master tapes submerged in water inside a room full of magnets.

    GREAT JOB, SHOUT FACTORY!!!
