Mystery Science Theatre 3000: Vol. 1
Experience the Riffs Again for the First Time
September 1st, 2015 from Shout! Factory

Experiencing déjà vu? Do not adjust your TV set (or tablet or phone), because it’s true: behold, again, the first collection of episodes of the beloved TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1. Since we at Shout! Factory believe that no one should have to sell an organ to afford an out-of print DVD of their favorite show, we’ve gathered all four episodes: Catalina Caper, The Creeping Terror, Bloodlust and The Skydivers, along with their respective theatrical trailers; restored the missing little details from the original broadcast versions and added brand new bonus features including The Crown Jewels, a featurette on Crown International Pictures, The Creeping Terror trailer, an extended trailer for The Creep Behind the Camera and
The Creep Behind the Camera Q&A with Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu at Screamfest 2014.

On September 1st, 2015, experience the adventures of Joel, Mike and their robot sidekicks Tom Servo and Crow on board The Satellite of Love, as they riff their way into your hearts again for the very first time. Fans can pre-order their copy now from ShoutFactory.com

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1 brings us Catalina Caper (aka Never Steal Anything Wet) a cinematic party full of fun, sun, bikinis and boats in this 1967 tale of a Southern California island and the teens who party all over it; The Creeping Terror, a 1964 low budget movie about aliens coming to Earth to eat people, analyze their chemistry and send the results to the home planet; Bloodlust, wherein pleasure boating teens land on the island of Dr. Balleau in this powerfully limp re-imagining of The Most Dangerous Game; and The Skydivers, a this tale of murder, infidelity and coffee at an airfield in a small desert town.

This is certainly welcome news. I skipped a lot of the early Rhino sets because I had most of the episodes on VHS and didn’t think it was worth the upgrade. (Ha…ha…) Shout! continues to surprise.

@ #26: I had the same thought. Recently I was considering going as far as to buy a bulk order of thin cases and make my own inserts for the Rhino DVDs that matched the spines of the Shout! cases.

I wonder how far down the rabbit hole this could go if successful. I can envision a Vol. 10 reissue w Gila and both Godzillas.
Now, let’s get CRAZY nitpicky. I think it took until Vol. 21 to have episodes with Turn Down Your Lights and Title Cards restored. So 13-20 would need to be reissued. Then that leaves only a handful of episodes released that don’t have closed captions. Might as well redo those while you’re at it. Oh, and you might as well reissue Vol. 32, because no MST Hour Wraps.
Lol, I know this gets insane at a certain point, but it’s still fun to be an extreme nitpicker. I do hope that this new run of Vol. 1 through Vol. 12 all get released, because we can at least have complete episodes from those. (and I do like that price point, very affordable)
Oh, and I hope that all of the remaining Rhino singles get absorbed into sets, so that every episode will be on a volume.
I can just imagine the email Shout! must get. “Which volume is Pod People or Space Mutiny on? What do you mean, you don’t sell those?” It only makes sense for Shout! to offer such popular titles.
I also hope the Shout! Select releases from a few years back don’t stall out future volume 2-12 releases. You know, since those already came out…
And some thought DVD was dead.
Thanks for indulging my insanity (stop the insanity!)

Well, I’m certainly glad they’re reissuing it, and I’ll buy it. I just wish I had known this a few weeks ago before I shelled out for a second set of the old ones. (The Catalina Caper disk in my first set had stopped working years ago, and some of the other disks were starting to act up.)

Doesnt the set look slim ? it looks like it holds 1-2 discs and I hope they are not piled on top of each other like pile on pete :-)

It just occurred to me that since Shout is quickly closing in on the last of the unreleased episodes, the ones that will the hardest to clear, this is a doubly smart move to go back and rerelease episodes that are out-of-print but were, theoretically, cleared for DVD release at some point. Just in case Shout hits a roadblock with their next volume.

To keep the speculation going, if they continue in this vein and reissue Rhino Vols. 2, 3, or even 6, do you think they’d choose to keep the Shorts discs? They’re pretty much obsolete now with almost all the episodes the shorts were originally featured in being released. I would gladly double dip one of those sets if in addition to upgraded bonuses and improved quality we also got another OOP single release instead of a Shorts collection.

You should have gone with Pork Belly Futures.

But I really want volume 2, since my copy of Cave Dwellers broke. We wants Ator’s hang gliding escapades Preciousss—and the fearsome battle with the invisible cave dwellers (seeing the graphics alone of the battle is amazing, eh?). How did they do it?

Well now we know it IS a single size DVD case, the question is it 4 movies on one disc or are 4 discs stacked on top of each other or are they going to be flipper discs

Shout, if you’re reading this, please PLEASE release these in a wide slipcase similar to all of the previous releases! It would just feel so much more satisfying to have the whole collection lined up and looking uniform on the DVD shelf.

Thank you Shout! My Rhino copy is just about worn out. That, and having some new extras are worth the purchase price. I just hope the extras are Daniel Griffith’s work. I always enjoy his work.

Glad to see this, and hope they keep going with the next volumes (Rhino’s release of 1003 (MERLIN’S SHOP) was SO dark, I have to mess with my video settings to watch it.)

Hopefully they get to volume 7 and 9 someday. They’re the only Rhino dvds I don’t have, except for the original volume 10.

I stupidly sold off all my old Rhino volumes a long time (except for 11), so I am incredibly stoked about this news. Volume II would/will be a day one repurchase if they release it.

I’m late to the party (thanks, vacation!).

I don’t dislike Rhino for the original releases and I never thought they were being lazy (although there was the “Killer Shrews” leg-whizzing). I think they were trying to make the episodes play more like movies and not a TV show. Yes, some of the edits were messy and it REALLY bugged me when riffs were cut in this interest (see “Home Economics Story”).

I will pass, at least on Volume One. A few new extras aren’t really enough to get me to buy what I have already purchased, especially when there weren’t any MAJOR headaches with the Rhino version, IMHO. Also, the first twelve sets cost ~$600 altogether. I’m not in a hurry to make that obsolete.

Volume Two might be a different story. I mean “Cave Dwellers” AND “Pod People” on the same set, with a (hopefully) repaired “Home Econ” short? C’mon. Absolutely, I’ll get that one.

I still wish the new sets had mini posters and individual DVD cases for easy librarying. THAT just might tip the scale.

I figured this would happen sooner or later. I know that if I didn’t get lucky 4 years ago purchasing sets 1-3 on Amazon for reasonable prices, I’d be jumping for joy right now. However, if SHOUT! continues this, I wonder what their plans are for future volumes. Seven episodes that were already released on the Rhino sets have already been re-released as singles; do you think they are going to combine some or re-release other singles by Rhino (such as ‘Crawling Hand’ and ‘I Accuse my Parents’) to compensate?

Almost 70 comments (69, DUDES!!!) and I’m the first one to speculate on getting Volume 9 for less than ebay prices?

    Revenge is sweet.

I will buy this while laughing at the dealers (cough vampires) demanding such high prices for their Rhino version.

I can only pray that Shout is able to continue with more Rhino sets releases.

Unfortunately, dealers will still be able to bleed a few impatient fans for Volume 1 until September, but after that, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND would pay even twenty bucks for the (used) Rhino version?

I hope some of those resale dealers paid dearly for their copies of Volume 1, believing desperate fans would roll over at the insane prices and make a huge profit for the dealer.

With any luck, dealers will be STUCK with them and not even be able to get their investment price back!!!!

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh, so THAT side of capitalism is unfair, you say? Oh, I should not gloat?

That’s what GREED does to you in the end if you live long enough. You lose.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I can see it now, the desperate furtive re-writings of their dumb ebay Amazon blurbs, no longer being able to claim the episodes themselves are OOP. (Oh, they LOVE that OOP, don’t they?)

I’m enjoying the hell out of this. As far as the lamentations about Volume 1 owners not wanting to pay for the extras, that’s just tough titty.

I would rather for YOU to have the LUXURY to double dip at a very reasonable price than for ME to pay outrageous amounts for damned DVDs while trying to merely complete my episode list! At least for you, it is optional.
Shout absolutely should NOT offer the extras separately. That would insult the whole process of what they are doing.

For those (and increasingly, there are far more of US than YOU) who didn’t get the Rhino set, we had no option (other than selling a kidney) until now.

Shout is the ruler of the universe. Thank God. Wait a second, if Shout is the ruler of the universe … Thank Shout.

I find it UN BEE LEAVE UH BUHL that some MST3K fans would frown on this release!!!!!!! I assume LORDING their Rhino copies over our heads gave them a rush.

I suppose any fan base has divisive competitive elements within the fold.

(BTW, Kirk is better than Picard)

Do I sound vindictive? I suppose I am. Throwing outrageous amounts of good money away for PLASTIC DISCS is a form of HELL, Mr. Dealer, so YES, I want YOU to EAT THAT COST you incurred obtaining your volume 1 in the hopes of resaling. See how that feels?

What makes it especially egregious was that it was often Msties gouging fellow Msties. Yeah, I know, free country, capitalism is God, “I don’t control the auction,” etc. Then DEAL with the very capitalistic fact you have been USURPED by Shout… because, it is a FREE country.

Again, to the upset Msties who don’t want to double dip, quit your bellyaching. Gods knows many of you TRIPLE DIPPED on Manos! And were PROUD OF IT! (And that’s just a bad bad bad movie.)

“This rare Rhino version is no longer in print. Bidding starts at 125.00”

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Your “rare” Rhino version now officially blows.

    Eat me.

That would probably take the type of legal sorcery that’s way beyond Shout’s jurisdiction.

Looks like they have different menus than the originals, for obvious reasons, but they don’t feature the usual crow/servo mini-animations. Very basic, but still, nicely different.
