Mystery Science Theatre 3000: Vol. 1
Experience the Riffs Again for the First Time

Experiencing déjà vu? Do not adjust your TV set (or tablet or phone), because it’s true: behold, again, the first collection of episodes of the beloved TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 with Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1. Since we at Shout! Factory believe that no one should have to sell an organ to afford an out-of print DVD of their favorite show, we’ve gathered all four episodes: Catalina Caper, The Creeping Terror, Bloodlust and The Skydivers, along with their respective theatrical trailers; restored the missing little details from the original broadcast versions and added brand new bonus features including The Crown Jewels, a featurette on Crown International Pictures, The Creeping Terror trailer, an extended trailer for The Creep Behind the Camera and
The Creep Behind the Camera Q&A with Frank Conniff and Trace Beaulieu at Screamfest 2014.

On September 1st, 2015, experience the adventures of Joel, Mike and their robot sidekicks Tom Servo and Crow on board The Satellite of Love, as they riff their way into your hearts again for the very first time. Fans can pre-order their copy now from ShoutFactory.com

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume 1 brings us Catalina Caper (aka Never Steal Anything Wet) a cinematic party full of fun, sun, bikinis and boats in this 1967 tale of a Southern California island and the teens who party all over it; The Creeping Terror, a 1964 low budget movie about aliens coming to Earth to eat people, analyze their chemistry and send the results to the home planet; Bloodlust, wherein pleasure boating teens land on the island of Dr. Balleau in this powerfully limp re-imagining of The Most Dangerous Game; and The Skydivers, a this tale of murder, infidelity and coffee at an airfield in a small desert town.

One of the things I like about the original set was the inclusion of the original uncut movies. I wish Shout would start doing that. But I’m not gonna sneeze at some new features. Kinda wish they were available independently, though, since I do still have my original. Anyway, I’m not complaining, honest.

Already got this…although glad to see Shout returning to the OOP Rhino releases. Shades of (more) things to come …?

I suspected this would happen, but not until Shout ran out of new episodes to put out as box sets. Hmm, I certainly do want this, but my budget only allows for 3 sets a year. Hmm…..

No complaints here. The less need for a bloodthirsty battle on Ebay for an OOP set, the better. Hopefully Shout reissues what they can.

Will the SRP be the same as other volumes, I wonder? Otherwise I’m $70 in the hole on September 1, between this and the Mad Max Blu-Ray.

The lack of a slipcase seems to indicate it might cost less… but you know, not gonna assume anything yet.

To Double Dip, Or Not To Double Dip.. Just for the extras.. That is the question. I will wait and see what is costs. Probably will watch the Rhino videos in the meantime just to see if one of the discs is messed up in someway. Like my copy of experiment #301 The Cave Dwellers.

I was worried for a minute that it would take the third slot, which would have been Volume 34, and that we wouldn’t get four newly-released episodes. Then I noticed the date is about half-way between the traditional dates of the 2nd release and the 3rd release. So, bonus!

We haven’t had a re-release in three years (Girl In Gold Boots from Vol 4, and Wild Wild World of Batwoman were re-released in March 2012). So, we’re overdue.

Also, I now know that I’m eating bologna sammiches that week in order to pay for it. Mmm. Balogna.

My question is will Shout fix the overall extremely low (comparative) audio level of “Catalina Caper”? That one has always stood out as needing a post-production tweak. If they fix that, in addition to the new extras, I’m most likely giving up the shekels.

  13. The Unabeefer says:

Hopefully this won’t be just a direct transfer of the original episodes. Shout’s been great at having clearer and better quality than Rhino ever did, and I’d love some corrected copies of some of these older releases.

Will buy even if just for the new bonus stuff. Keep up the bonus stuff!!!

It’s all about the extras for me, and the way Shout! crams these things with goodies makes it worthwhile. Also having been a dope that only picked up a couple of the Rhino collections when they were affordable, this is terrific news personally.

Its good to know they’re fixing some of the errors from the Rhino (they just didn’t care!) Home Video releases.
Like the missing bumpers, stingers, title cards, etc.
If they do Volume 2, I’d like the MST Hour wraps for 301 and 303.
The only bad thing is, Rhino was SO lazy, they included those Shorts collections as a 4th disc on some of those Volumes.
Thank god we have Shout and they’re nowhere near as lazy.

I already have vol. 1 so I may pass, but re-release vol. 2 (which is now regularly commanding $100 or more on Amazon) and we’ll be in business.

I didn’t buy into the box sets until Shout! started releasing them and had to get whatever was left in print from Amazon.
Volume One is not one I have yet, and (agreeing with Tarlcabot @ 16) I like the dig Shout! makes at Rhino for cutting out the bumpers to commercial while in the movie segments. I’ve watched the episodes so many times I expect to see that bumper.

Hmm..should I? Money is tight- but, to procure a better copy of “Catalina Caper” with Lyle Waggoner ( through his advanced Wonder Women multi-generational technology) is dominating my life. That said, I do have the Rhino version, but, the audio needs to be turned up to 65 in order to hear the movie.

I wish they would.. I would pickup all the rereleases of they gave them covers to match everything on the shelf.. yeah, I’m a nut that way. Between having all of them in nice matched spines and just plain supporting Shout, I would do that.

I already have Volume I (and all of the Rhino sets), and its fine that they are re-releasing it for all those that do not have it. I probably won’t (re)buy it, because the video quality (tape hits, etc) have surely worsened since the Rhino release–most of the eps in the original set were free of video/audio issues, but 607-Bloodlust already had quite a lot of tape hits in the Rhino release. I’m sure the transfer will be better from Shout, but it will not make up for the degradation that will definitely rear its head on the masters that were not properly preserved.

  26. Jay K says:

The thing I like about the way the current sets are produced with four slipcases is that if, in theory, Shout released all of the episodes this way, you could eventually put them all in episodic order. The Steve Vance posters are great too, and it’s hard not to want to see that treatment across the board. That said, Shout may not have wanted to go to the trouble and expense since not everyone would pony up for this collection of movies a second time. I might pull the trigger on this regardless. I always found the Rhino sets to be a bit garish in terms of art direction.

Personally, I’d also like to see some sets that collect all of the one-off titles that Rhino released as singles, but never found their way onto one of the volumes. You could arguably ditch the shorts collections and include some episodes this way too. If everything gets released, the need for shorts compilations becomes a tad superfluous — though they make great introductory discs for MST3K neophytes. They could just as easily become bonus content as well.

I have Rhino’s volume one, so I’m on the fence about this too. That being said, this is a welcome sign if it leads to more re-releases of out-of-print material. I was just thinking how they could conceivably make a boxset out of the remaining OOP single releases, like “Hellcats” and “I Accuse My Parents”.

Having just recently lucked into finding a used copy of “The Crawling Hand”, I’d certainly love a second chance to get the episodes I missed. It’s only logical they’d start with volume one, but I wonder if they’ll eventually work themselves up to volume nine? Now there’s one people seeming to be selling organs for…

That depends on Susan Hart (yesterday’s birthday girl). From what I’ve heard, she isn’t keen on selling the rights of movies she owns.

Look I don’t want to double dip and I’m disappointed in this release with that new content thrown in. Shout really needs to throw a bone to those of us who do have this and make these new extras available to us in some alternate way.

@31: You can also sell your Rhino set ASAP while prices are still high (it’s $70 and up on Amazon, and $24+ on eBay) and pocket the profits.

I like the re-releases with the new extras like Manos: The Hands of Fate, Mitchell, and The Brain That Wouldn’t Die(all stand-alone DVD releases previously).

It’s too bad they don’t appear to include the uncut movies, but Catalina Caper was the only one I remember having anything notable cut from it. I prefer the Ballyhoo features, especially when they include comments from the former cast members.

I think I’m up for purchasing these to add to my collection and as an excuse to rewatch them.

Well… I’ll probably go ahead and pick this up. I’ve got every box set (including the original #10), but so many of those Rhino releases have pretty bad video & audio. I still need to get those individual re-releases Shout did for some of the others, too.

How many Shout Factory re-releases of Rhino originals have there been to date? And is there any difference in them, beyond better audio / picture quality?

Based on the look of the packaging and the somewhat slimmer than usual extras, hopefully the price on this will be lower than usual to make it extra tempting for people who already own it.

Fantastic news! :) I’m also a newer fan like Hunter @ 28, I have all the Shout sets so far but none from Rhino yet because of the higher prices they go for, so this is great for me and the newer generation of MSTies to get the OOP episodes without costing an arm and a leg. And the new extras really seal the deal as well.

The pre-order is up on Shout’s website, and it’s listed at $37.99. I’ll probably pick this up, even though I have the original. Just because I like to support any MST3K releases from Shout. And those extras look sweet as well.

  39. NickH says:

@35 According to my math, this set brings the total up to 17 re-releases. 4 from this set, 10 “Shout Selects,” 2 from the 25th Anniversary volume and the single of “Manos.” For quite a few of them I believe the picture/audio quality is better (though not extremely better). They also add in a few things that were cut from the rhino releases, including a missing stinger from one episode (I think it was “The Beginning of the End”).

Wow, affordable reprints + restored bumpers + extra features = awesome. Thanks Shout! Now I will have extra money in my budget for the things that really matter, like buying more 2D arcade shoot ’em up games (my favorite videogame genre). 8)

  41. Volume 1 is a great set, so hopefully this helps anyone who doesn’t have the Rhino set get these great episodes. BLOODLUST and CATELINA CAPER are also two of my most favorite episodes of MST3K.

I started buying Rhino’s DVD sets pretty much as they began coming out, but beyond “just because I was lucky doesn’t mean I can’t understand this would mean more to anyone not as lucky” the extra features have at least caught my attention; “The Creeping Terror” is one of my favourite episodes as well. What I’m wondering, though, is whether this will be a “Shout! Factory site exclusive” the way their “reissued single episodes” have been. I did wind up buying the “25th Anniversary” set from their site so as to get the cardboard case and be foolishly consistent, anyway.

Already own all the Rhino sets but will gladly double-dip on a few of them, such as this one. As others have pointed out, the audio/video on some of those episodes from their original printing more than a decade ago can be borderline abrasive. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some improvements, but really thrilled for the extras… and the potential to re-release additional sets. I would love to see Vol. 8 get the re-release love it deserves, mostly for the kind of extras Shout! could bring to “Monster A-Go-Go” and “Hobgoblins,” as well as maybe correcting some of the really sharp damage done to “The Dead Talk Back.”

If it wasn’t that the bottom dropped out of the market selling your old volumes back to Amazon (“Up to $1.00!”) I’d be upgrading all my old Rhino volumes.
Some were good, some were just plain cheaply produced, and it’d be worth it to have Catalina and Skydivers with Ballyhoo documentaries and funny-menus.
As it is, I’ll leave some for the kids who missed out. :(

  49. I imagined that Shout! would eventually do this. I’m totally down and even though I own Vol 1, I will be double dipping.

I dig the slipcase and the 37.99 price is on point! The main reason I’m going to buy this is because I love extra features and to hear that they are going to fix the transfers and bumpers is just extra awesome! Shout!, you the boss!

Between their MST releases and everything they do under the Scream Factory label, Shout! can basically HAVE ALL MY MONEY!

I was lucky enough to get into MST3K when everything Rhino was still in print outside of Vol 10.

I really hope Shout will consider making some low budget release of the new features by themselves for all of those who have been loyal and purchasing all these years and who already have the original box sets. Just a DVD in a paper case for $5 or something?
