Weekend Discussion Thread: MST3k-Inspired Horse Names

Alert readers Steve & Keri suggest:

With the recent triple crown win, I thought: what if I owned a racehorse, and what MST-related name would I give it. I always thought “Prince of Space” would make a great racehorse name. Others I like include “Flag on the Moon.” “Satellite of Love,” “Sirveaux” and “Push the Button.”

I think my filly would be called “Torgo’s Knees.”

What about you?

According to the rules a racehorse’s name must not exceed 18 characters including spaces, which is why you see so many long run-together racehorse names. With that in mind I’d go with WhatDoYouThinkSirs 0r AnyFruittoDeclare.

Deathstalker (I’m pretty sure I named my horse this in a video game or three…)
    Space Chief

Rowsdower (I’d demand that the name only be spoken in Troy’s femmy voice).

Torgo’s Knees, huh? Now Torgo’s Pajamas, I like the sound of that. Keeps ’em guessing.

Did you know that official Jockey Club horse names can only have 18 characters? And that spaces and punctuation count? That’s why a lot of horse names are squished together.

But seriously, CastletonSnob would be mine.

    WeLikeItVeryMuch
Rex Dart (or Eskimo Spy) (or RexDartEskimoSpy; that’s less than 18 characters)

And from the previously suggested names, I love Beer on the Sun and Megaweapon. All these names have a good sound to them as the announcer yells “And DOWN the stretch they come, Megaweapon on the rail, WeLikeItVeryMuch and RexDart half a length back, Push the Button right behind … and on the outside, HERE COMES BEER ON THE SUN!!”

Today’s line is a real beauty, as Beer Wine lines up on the inside, Bad Touch is in third position, Gill Man is at 4-1, and Droppo is the underdog at 20-1. Sadly, The Monster is a late scratch, as it turns out, there was no monster.

If Prince of Space were an actual horse name, and in a race he was leading or making a charge on the home stretch, I would love to hear the race announcer’s voice dubbed over by Professor Mackin’s voice, shouting “Prince of Space! Prince of Space is coming!!”

Coming out of the final turn it’s Moon-Rock Oh-Wow and Brigadoon Hippy and they’re neck and neck. And in the final stretch it’s Moon-Rock-Oh-Wow pulling well ahead. It’s Moon-Rock Oh-Wow, Moon-Rock Oh-Wow… but wait, breaking fast along the rail now it’s Cabbage-Patch Elvis! And Cabbage-Patch Elvis is pulling even with Moon-Rock Oh-Wow! And at the finish, it’s…!

You know, many of us here on the MST3K WDT have handles that work well as horse names. Personally, I like the sound of AlbuquerqueTurkey, and it is 17 characters, too!

FYI – On number 13 “passed” instead of past was a pun (beer joke). Okay, I guess they can’t all be winners.

Have to go with “Flag on the Moon”, but mainly so that when he comes from behind and crosses the finish line the announcer can say, “Flag on the Moon? How did he get there?!”

    The final standings:
1st place: Flag on the Moon
    2nd place: Woman’s Purse
3rd place: Hoof Prints in the Wasteland

I guess “LastOfTheWildHorses” is too obvious.

So, I’d go with “Mitchell”. He is, after all, a real horse’s ass. Of course he’d get winded before the first turn and stop to catch his breath.

@#7, it is amazing how many of the episode names would make great horse’s names all by themselves. Red Zone Cuba makes more sense as a horse’s name than as a movie name.
