@#447: True enough. I guess it’s a reminder of how easy it is to get sucked into a pointless argument with trolls, especially when the topic at hand is something you’re passionate about. I think it was Mark Twain who said, “Never argue with stupid people; they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” So I’m officially backing off and leaving Herandar to split hairs and pick nits on his own. I hope he has fun.

Looking at Kicktraq, it seems that the campaign has already beat Monday’s numbers and will probably beat yesterday’s as well. Impressive, especially considering that the day started with the campaign at about -$13K thanks to an ill-timed dropout late in the night by a $25K backer! The “overnight crew” recovered from that in under three hours, if I remember correctly! Now, we have a little over $970K to go before the big $5.5M goal!

I decided to pick up the 87-episode collection in addition to my Kickstarter pledge. I already have many of those episodes on DVD, but I ripped them to my computer a long time ago and in an older video format, so getting fresh copies will spare me the trouble of re-encoding them. There are more than enough new episodes to make it worth it for me. I stream them from a DLNA server to the computers and TVs on my LAN at home.

I can’t do anything past my initial $100. I’ll be okay with whatever happens after the Kickstarter is finished.

I kind of like not being familiar with anyone involved with this show, beyond Joel and Patton. It’s like going into the series fresh with no expectations as to what it’s going to be like.

I posted this on Kickstarter earlier, but here is my quick back-of-a-napkin calculation to see how feasible $5.5M really is:

Let’s assume that we see a surge in the last 48 hours of the campaign, but that it isn’t quite as large as the surge we saw in the first 48 hours, which seems to be what everyone is expecting. How large does it need to be to get to the $5.5M goal?

The Kicktraq total for Wednesday was about 77% of the total for Day 3 of the campaign, November 12th. Let’s use that figure as the basis for some “what-if” calculations: if the total for Thursday reaches about 77% of the total for Day 2, and the total for Friday reaches about 77% of the total for Day 1, it will be enough to get to about $5.58M, with the help of the add-on sales numbers we already have. Subsequent add-on sales will only lower the bar even more.

So, yes, I still think $5.5M is perfectly feasible before the end. Whether it happens or not will largely depend on what Joel has planned: the telethon, the remaining surprise announcement(s), tomorrow’s Double Feature, etc. Of course, we’ll also have to keep pushing on Kickstarter to spread the word and to squeeze the last few nickels out of existing backers.

I was one of those folks who did not believe he could make the “final” goal (well, early on) but now I do think it’s possible. Certainly not a slam dunk, but I suspect there are at least a few folks, like myself, who have allowed themselves a bit more “cap space” to increase our pledges during the telethon .

I’m waiting for the last couple of hours before I go all in, in the hopes it will start a frenzy (particularly if we are close). If nothing more, Joel has brought back the excitement of the old days (perhaps he should have done this over Labor day. No, too on the money. But at least on a three day weekend?).

Good on everyone connected with this, including those of us who have pledged. We need MST3K now more than ever in these troubled times. 2017 can’t come soon enough (assuming that’s when it will be released).

You say I’m stupid and a troll because I refuse to buy into unfounded hype. Nice. Closed minded posters like yourself and EricJ are why I’ve posted a mere handful of times in the years I’ve been reading this site. But go ahead and break down the per hour dollar amounts and update it every hour if that makes you feel useful. (It isn’t.) I don’t stoop to name-calling.

Herandar: But go ahead and break down the per hour dollar amounts and update it every hour if that makes you feel useful.(It isn’t.)

Are you suggesting that it would be more “useful” for me to continue to stretch out an old argument about something that ultimately doesn’t matter one way or the other, long after everyone else is already sick of hearing it? I don’t think that’s useful, and I doubt I’m alone. But whether I am or not, I’m done with this conversation.

Back to the campaign, shall we? Overnight update: we’ve passed 85% and we now have a new $330K add-on sales figure from Joel. As I figure it, we’ll be in good shape for tomorrow if we can bring in at least $200K today, which will put us within $620K on our last day (that’s pretty close to that 77% figure I mentioned earlier). Given that we already have a ~$78K head start for the day, going by Kicktraq’s numbers, I think it’s entirely possible that we’ll go beyond that.

Again with wild logical leaps and attributing things I never said or implied… I didn’t suggest anything. In the past, I’ve found some of the links you provided to be useful. Nothing you can say about the Kickstarter will affect it at this point, especially as you are posting it here.

I didn’t bring up the KTMA episodes to argue it further. I explicitly brought it up as evidence that you dismiss other posters that have differing opinions than yours as trolling. Your inability to accept a different worldview as equally valid was soundly confirmed. There’s only one true way to be a fan, and it’s your way. Well, I don’t accept that, because it isn’t true. Civil argument hasn’t convinced me otherwise; name-calling doesn’t either.

So am I! I always enjoyed their work, and the fact that they’ll be involved in the new season is a reassuring sign that Joel intends to stick close to the spirit of the original show.

As for the other artists that Joel introduced in his most recent update … I’m afraid I’m not familiar with their other work, since I don’t watch TV apart from MST3K and a few other favorites, but from what I can see of their craftsmanship, I’d say that Joel has again chosen wisely. Another benefit is that they all bring their own communities of followers and fans, which is helping to spread awareness of the new show in circles that would otherwise not have heard of it. I’m sure that accounts (at least in part) for the surge of new backers we’re seeing today: it’s not even 7:30 on the west coast, and already we’re above $100K for the day!

I have to say – I have been doubting that they get to the $5.5 million mark, but they are already $100K up today. I am SURE they are going to pass the $5 million mark before the end, and I am strongly suspecting something will be up for that final push that will get us to 12 episodes.

I’m a bit confused about one thing: Back when Joel announced the $85 reward (which I decided to take), he said “This is the package for fans who don’t want to pay for shipping”. So…if I bump up my donation to $100 (to get the T-shirt and other things in the mail), does that mean on top of the $100, I have to pay for shipping?!? And how much is that gonna be?!?

skierpete: What a masterfully managed kickstarter campaign this has been.

Indeed! So many of the crowdfunding campaigns I’ve watched have been train wrecks, but this one seems to have been almost perfectly orchestrated and executed.

I don’t remember who or where, but somebody observed that Joel has run this campaign a lot more like an old-fashioned telethon than a conventional crowdfunding campaign. That could be taken as a criticism, but I think it’s one of the things that has made this campaign so novel. Compared to other high-profile campaigns of a similar scope, which do big business at the start and finish and pretty much die in the middle, Joel has been able to keep this one percolating with sincere and open updates, exciting and carefully-timed announcements, and a good roster of reward tiers and add-ons that have been continuously refreshed to reflect demand and new ideas from the fans. As a result, it has outraised other campaigns which had substantially larger numbers of backers!

Whether the campaign reaches $5.5M or not–I’m still optimistic, but one mustn’t count the eggs before they’re hatched–it was a job exceedingly well done by Joel and Company. I’m sure it’s being watched closely by others in the entertainment industry also, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it becomes a model for other campaigns in the future.

  24. I agree. People have said “why didn’t he announce that sooner”? (For any piece of information in which they were interested.)

Yet, each announcement has had an impact, something that would have been missing if he had done one big info dump.

“Wow — I almost hate to wade in here, but it’s the last 30 or so comments that make me question whether this generation is going to be able to function after their elders have moved on.

(Nowhere does the expression “Get a life” have greater pertinence. Who the hell cares what Frank does or does not think, or whether Joel did or did not imply things about the KTMA episodes?”

More silly inexplicable generational blathering and finger wagging. “When our elders move on,” puh-lease. Did you wade in here with your cane? Did it ever occur to you that this kind of preachy, crass rant comes off every bit as tacky and obnoxious as the supposedly oh so disruptive and oh so “pointless” discussion you decided to jump into anyways? So you don’t care what MST alums have to say about the reboot and don’t think that should be discussed? Good for you, Mike? I really don’t see what’s so hard to understand that comments made by MST alums such as Frank are valid points for discussion and things were going fine for awhile, and things were being clarified on point until a few folks got their non Tom Servo approved undies in a bunch. I’m reeeeealllly tired of this silly, self righteous, midwestern flavored stance of “Oh, let’s just keep our mouths shut and nod our heads and smile politely and all try to put our best faces on whenever an even remotely uncomfortable topic of conversation comes up.” (I’m from the midwest and can tell you this naive stereotype and social approach is disingenuous poison when it’s not sincere) I’ve found what Trace and Frank have had to say about the reboot interesting and what they have had to say doesn’t dampen my excitement for the reboot. You talk about “pertinence” in the same breath as “Get a life.” Well, it shouldn’t have to be explained but there is nothing more pertinent to MST3K than someone who worked on the show commenting on it. When an MST alum says something about the show’s past, present and future, I find that to be nothing less than a piece of relevant talking history. I think something as historic to the MST community as Joel rebooting the show was bound to open a few cans of worms, but it’s also obviously been extremely positive and opened up quite a few nifty crates of tasty, yummy hamdingers. That said, if people want to discuss both the positive things folks on the other side such as Trace and Frank have said (and as been stated and re-stated in that supposedly BAD discussion, they have also both said many positive, supportive things) and the quite clearly not-so-positive things a few MST alum such as Trace and Frank have said, then so be it. If you find that uncomfortable or a threat to your worldview about “this generation” (not that it should matter overly much but heck, I’m not even a millennial) or what YOU think is worthwhile, I really don’t care and you can quite frankly “Get a life” yourself, sir and stop with your inane preaching and hand waving.

Yeah, I’ve said it before, but Joel has done a fantastic job of keeping up interest. (Something I’ve also said before: the only time he’s whiffed it was the Turkey Day videos at Kickstarter HQ. Well, and it sounds like he probably should have given the old cast a heads-up before launching the Kickstarter, but I think we’ve long since wrung all the useful conversation from that subject that we’re ever going to.) Keeping announcements coming out every few days has sustained interest (and brought in new interest) where a less-competently managed campaign could have stalled out after the first week. (I think we probably would have made $3.3M no matter what, but it was just a few days ago we were thinking $4.4M was going to be a challenge and $5.5M would be unattainable.)

Looking at the artists now and WOW, what a crew.

You will have to pay $14 in shipping (to the US) on top of the $100 pledge, for a total of $114. On the bright side, the shipping gets added to the Kickstarter total. So by changing your pledge, you would actually add another $29 to the amount raised so far.

However, since the Kickstarter goal amount includes the cost of producing & shipping the rewards, I gotta think that the $85 pledge (devoid of much of the production–and all of the shipping–costs) results in more net revenue to the project.

In the end, my guess is that an $100 pledge would send a stronger message to the networks about the level of commitment of the fan base (a big part of this project), whereas an $85 pledge would mean more money could be spent on the new season. I’m not sure what works out better for the show overall.

Wooooooooooooooow, now the term “cavalcade” gets thrown around a lot these days (well I guess maybe it doesn’t) but THAT is one big old cavalcade of stars.

Also Joel and Jerry were great on Comedians in Cars. Jerry said in the intro that MST3K was one of his favorite shows which doesn’t surprise me. Anybody remember Jerry’s lines about Plan 9 From Outer Space in the Chinese restaurant episode?

“Elaine: You should’ve just had dinner with your uncle tonight and gotten it over with. It’s just a movie.

Jerry: Just a movie?! You don’t understand. This isn’t ‘Plans 1 through 8 from Outer Space’, this is ‘Plan 9’, this is the one that worked. The worst movie ever made!

I can’t go to a bad movie by myself. Who am I gonna make sarcastic remarks to, strangers?”

    :)

I also love the bit from the episode when George goes to the holistic healer and Jerry keeps trying to figure out the “Flaming loves of Sigmund” line he groggily wrote down watching a Plan 9 style B movie the night before.

I believe reminders do go out in the last two days of the campaign, so you’re likely right about them being the biggest contributor to today’s big jump in numbers.

But I wouldn’t rule out the draw of Adventure Time and Steven Universe, either; they’ve got pretty devoted fan followings.

The latest update, listing potential cameos (Jack Black, Joel McHale, Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris, Jerry Seinfeld, and Mark Hamill) ought to get some pledges moving too.

    Herandar:

That’s a good point; MST3K’s got fewer backers than Veronica Mars but they’re putting in more money. (Probably doesn’t hurt that its fandom skews older than VM’s and has more disposable income.)

Today’s doing great numbers (more than $10K/hour in KS, plus the $45K in Add-Ons) but it’s going to have to increase to make it to 77% of Day 2, which would come out to around $378K.

It’s still possible. The double-features have been bringing in a lot of money, and the new cameo announcement is bound to raise some eyebrows. But hitting $378K before midnight EST means more than doubling what’s come in so far today (including add-ons).

    jaybird3rd:
Back to the campaign, shall we?Overnight update: we’ve passed 85% and we now have a new $330K add-on sales figure from Joel.As I figure it, we’ll be in good shape for tomorrow if we can bring in at least $200K today, which will put us within $620K on our last day (that’s pretty close to that 77% figure I mentioned earlier).Given that we already have a ~$78K head start for the day, going by Kicktraq’s numbers, I think it’s entirely possible that we’ll go beyond that.

$200K, on the other hand, is extremely likely. (Just about certain if we include add-ons, since we’re already at $186K when we include those.)

$620K tomorrow is a pretty tall order. We’ve been doing great numbers this week, and the telethon sounds like a lot of fun that will generate a lot of interest, but $620K is more than the Kickstarter’s brought in in the past 5 days combined.

On the other hand, there are certainly some fans with deep pockets who could make up the difference in the final hours. Any one of Jerry Seinfeld, Mark Hamill, or Jack Black could get us to $5.5M right now without breaking a sweat.

Not saying that’s what’s going to happen; part of the goal of the Kickstarter is to demonstrate fan interest, and Jerry Seinfeld kicking in a couple of hundred grand at the last minute doesn’t exactly do that. Then again, if the Kickstarter pledges get really close right up at the end, I wouldn’t rule out some of the big-name contributors bumping up their contributions, either.

How long till the “It’s too Hollywood. Joel’s sold out” crowd emerges?

But yeah, Mark Hamill’s bringing THE FORCE to MST3K!

reform: You will have to pay $14 in shipping (to the US) on top of the $100 pledge, for a total of $114.

Thanks for the info. Still undecided if I want to bump up to $100 level. I would like the t-shirt (everything else is “ehh” for me though)…

Honestly did not think they would be able to raise this much, and these last two days look to be pretty crazy.

Thad: Today’s doing great numbers (more than $10K/hour in KS, plus the $45K in Add-Ons) but it’s going to have to increase to make it to 77% of Day 2, which would come out to around $378K.

It’s still possible. The double-features have been bringing in a lot of money, and the new cameo announcement is bound to raise some eyebrows. But hitting $378K before midnight EST means more than doubling what’s come in so far today (including add-ons).

True, it seems like a long shot, but at this point I’m prepared to be amazed. $200K was a “safe bet” on my part, but now it is all but a certainty. Looking at our current Kicktraq numbers, we’re at about $170K for the day so far (or about 45% to $378K), and it isn’t even noon yet on the west coast. Word is still spreading about the new talent that Joel has announced, and as you say, there’s tonight’s double feature.

I’m also thinking of the pattern that previous Kickstarter campaigns (Reading Rainbow, Veronica Mars, etc.) have followed: a big burst at the beginning and then a smaller one at the end. My 77% estimate was an attempt to extrapolate from our Wednesday numbers and find a level for the end of our campaign that seemed to fit the pattern. Perhaps the backers that would otherwise have been waiting in the wings for the last two days have already been brought in by the interim incentives that Joel has been so brilliantly offering, but somehow I suspect we’ll still see a last-day burst of activity.

I’ll be watching anxiously to see how we do today … as if I haven’t been already!

Thanks for posting this! Somebody mentioned it in the Kickstarter comment thread, where it’s been getting good feedback, but it got buried before I could fish out the link. A very insightful interview by Joel.
