Watching the live telethon segment with the video game players – like watching someone else watching Manos The Hands Of Fate…

So now we get to watch people watching a movie? What’s THAT about?

I’ve been on the road all night so I didn’t get to see the telethon, just heard about the news. 6 million?! WOW. Count me in with everyone else who have to eat a whole lotta crow (avian, non-automaton) over thinking 5.5 wasn’t reachable. What an amazing time to be a MST.

Wow. I’ll be the first to admit that I thought nine episodes were going to be a stretch and here we are at fourteen. Joel sure knows how to run a hell of a Kickstarter. I’m still not entirely sold on this myself, but I’m thrilled that this much support has turned out and am really pulling for this to be good. Congrats again and it’s a good night to be a MSTie.

    He always looks so tired…

Wow, January? Like I said, give these guys some time to sleep!

The Kickstarter lists the first episode’s estimated delivery date as July.

I’m at the $85 tier, so I’m wondering when they’ll have the soundtrack download, classic episode downloads, and Rifftrax shorts available for download.

And then how long it’ll take them to get the server back up after 30,000 people try to download them at once.

Anyway, time for bed. Goodnight everybody. (And it is a good night indeed.)

Now *that* was the most fun I’ve ever had on the Internet! What an amazing month, and an amazing last few hours in particular, seeing the campaign finally fly as high as I always believed it could!

I probably shouldn’t have thrown in as much money as I did, especially during those frantic final minutes, but seeing the total sail past $6.3M just in the nick of time, and getting to see Joel’s stunned reaction LIVE, was worth every penny and more!

    14. I was amazed when we got confirmation for 3. Amazing, absolutely amazing. To put in perspective, this will mean this season will have more episodes than seasons 1, 2, 7, 9, and 10. Or, in other words, half of the existing seasons. Incredible. Thank you to everyone who chipped in, and congratulations!

Regardless of anyone’s feelings on the reboot or it being crowdfunded, Joel deserves some serious props for promoting this project just about as well as it could have possibly been promoted. From the initial announcement that caught everyone off guard, to the slow trickle of information on casting, to the marathons and telethons..it will serve as a example for running the perfect Kickstarter campaign. And that gives me hope that the project itself will be run as well as the campaign to fund it.

The influx of support the last couple of days amazed me; while somewhere deep inside I really thought we might blow the doors off this thing, I dared not let myself get quite so optimistic. It’s neat to see how much influence this “little puppet show” — which I think brings people together in a way television never did before its time — has had on so many people. For Joel and EVERYONE involved in MST3K from its inception it has to be amazingly gratifying to have this kind of support, since to me it is a measure of the amount of joy it has brought into peoples lives.

Agree, this has been an amazing ride. Excitement, anxiety, optimism, obsession, giddiness, euphoria. Now I’m at Anticipation!

But what will I do know that I don’t have Kickstarter to check obsessively several times an hour?

Yea, I think January for new MST3K episodes is really pushing it considering the post production alone. I think June/July is more reasonable and given that this will be on the web, it wouldn’t surprise me if it were later than that.

I’ll be curious to see if any network, cable station, or web platform decides to pick up the show after that. I hope that Joel was already in contact with with a few of them, however I could see this being Kickstarted every year if not.

Congrats on surpassing their goal and I look forward to this reboot. Will give it a chance like I did ICWXP..Now I’m just wondering what movies and possibly(or is it possible?) shorts they’ll riff..Will it be movies they passed on before? Will it be movies they couldn’t get the rights to like Moment by Moment? As long as the reboot has the same spirit as the original and as long it’s funny and not trying to be hip, then I’m all for it..

Fantastic news. The telethon was a bit of a mess, but the fans came out anyway. I never imagined we would make 12 let alone 14 episodes.

Based on the KS campiagn, I think they are planning on SHOOTING the episodes this summer, which means that release would probably be next fall. We’ll have to have patience, but up until a month ago we thought the next new episodes of MST3K were going to be in…forever, so even if we have to wait a year it will be worth it.

What I am more excited to see is where it gets picked up (channel or streaming service). I am guessing we wouldn’t hear anything about another season beyond that until this season starts broadcasting, but I think there’s a good chance that Joel will get his wish and the show will go beyond one season as well.

Awesome job by everyone (except the tech guy).

It’s been quite a ride, I have to say. I strongly suspect that Joel and Shout! already had the funding for at least nine episodes and just created the Kickstarter to generate excitement as they had their investors slowly feed their cash into it. Joel was clearly caught off guard toward the end, though, and especially episodes 13 and 14 where he was making up new goals off the top of his head. Overall, it was a lot of fun and also exhausting! I’m sure they thought I was loafing at work, checking Kickstarter every 30 minutes or so.

Clearly this will be a fall premiere — that’s why the Holiday episode will fit in nicely. I would suspect we’d see the first one no earlier than the middle of September.

I stayed up as late as I could here on the east coast, but didn’t see the final hour. I’m *really* sorry I didn’t see the announcement (was there one?) about 14 episodes, but at least I got to see Day and some of HER Facebook feed (I have to say she’s a bit of a dirty girl, and I mean that in the nicest possible way).

I ended up donating as much as I could (only $85) but as someone who thought so little of this in the beginning I have to say it’s been quite a turnaround for me.

Did anyone else think the telethon was Public Access television’s finest hour?

I watched the double feature then the entire telethon. I hung in there with all the technical difficulties and roughshod production. I appreciate the hard work that went into the telethon from Joel and all the guests and performers, as well as the technical people and Meltdown Comics.. I enjoyed the show. They said about 7000 people were there from the beginning to the end watching the telethon. Thank you, MST3K. See you in 2016, new season. And, you’re welcome, Joel. ????????????

To the MANY people who said 12 episodes was highly unlikely, I say the following: “that was actually a quite reasonable stance given the enormity of the task and I’m just pleasantly delighted that we were able to buck the odds.” So, take that!

  40. Tim S. Turner says:

By the way, there’s not going to be a new episode in January. Joel said during the telethon that they don’t even go into the writing room until mid January. At that rate, you’re talking more like March at the soonest. They have to watch and rewatch the movie multiple times before they even shoot the thing. And I think the first shows are going to take a little longer since this is an all new staff (except Joel and Paul). It will probably take the newbies a while to get into the swing of things.

It looks like the Add-Ons page is still up and running; if you still want to buy the whole new season for $85, that’s the cost of the DVD package.

Which, by the way, if the Add-Ons shop IS still up and running, that means they’re still making money and last night’s numbers aren’t the final tally…

Don’t forget they haven’t even built the sets yet. Even a cheap show takes a lot of people working a lot of roles.

One would hope that, at some point, Heston and the ‘bots would be subjected to the couple of old-school Gamera movies that slipped by Joel & co back in the day (since they weren’t in the Sandy Frank syndication package): Gamera vs Viras (1968, aka Destroy All Planets) and Gamera vs Jiger (1970, aka Gamera vs Monster X). Shout released them on DVD, around the time of the MST3K Gamera set, so it probably wouldn’t be too difficult.

Andrew: Agreed. $5.5 million is more than even the Reading Rainbow Kickstarter made, and that was riding on the backers’ childhood nostalgia and desire of goodwill to help children read. I’m concerned a cult show about a guy and two robot puppets joking over B movies can really manage to beat RR’s record.

Excellent list of films to riff. I was wondering, though…will the “holiday special” be a regular episode of MST3k, or will it be something else? Perhaps a 1/2 hour special where they don’t riff a movie, or perhaps riffing Christmas shorts. Guess we’ll have to wait until next year to find out.
