Felicia Day to Be the New Mad; Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn to Voice the Bots

ProfilePic2

Joel has posted another update. The big news is the announcement that Felicia Day will play the new Mad, Dr. Forrester’s daughter, and that comedians Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn will provide the voices of Crow and Tom Servo, respectively.

As I said in the KS thread, fun update video, the new cast seem to be synching up nicely already, Yount really nails Crow’s voice. Baron needs a bit more time with Tom though, but he seems to have Tom’s unbridled enthusiasm down so far which is the biggest part of Tom’s character. Felicia is GREAT so far, but these lines…..

“Where are those little money making robots??”

Joel: “That’s what I get for selling the rights to an evil genius.”

Ehhhh, I just didn’t find this funny, feels flat. I hate to play the skeptic card but I’m kind of bummed that they have apparently gone with a “bad-guy business scheme” concept for the reboot where Jonah and the ‘bots are basically just indentured, put upon employees because Joel sold the rights to Kinga in some cheesy self referencing narrative (obviously Joel’s line about selling the rights is a meta dig at Jim). I was really hoping they would still be castaways or as I have said before, a semi dark “Last Man on Earth” concept where they are stuck in a futuristic theater in a nowhere land that the Mads feed the movies into, that would have been interesting.

Also, no offense to Joel, but rolling out the video footage of the old cast and continuing to insist “everyone is invited to participate” just feels awkward at this point with almost everyone already firmly saying they’re not involved. But at least he’s willing to keep extending that olive branch I guess.

I think you may be reading too much into it. That’s all self-referential stuff; it may not have any bearing on what plot they end up using for the series.

I like your abandoned theater idea, but the SoL is right there in the graphic; I doubt the premise of the new show will be much different from the old.

    Yeah, agreed.

Though Frank just tweeted, when asked if he’d be returning, “Your guess is as good as mine,” which at least is the first time a former cast member has given a response other than a flat “No.” I still don’t think we should get our hopes up, but it would be nice.

Or, it was a reference to something else entirely; or, it was simply a joke.

Getting a little tired of online comments getting the Talmudic scholar reading treatment to support (fan) theories of who-hates-who, or whatever. If every word out of Joel/Trace/etc’s announcement or tweet has to be interpreted as a “slam” then no, it really won’t be easy to get everyone back together.

The line was fictional character, not evil genius… and sorry to dissent but, i dunno, made me laugh. Kinga storms in and you forget that it’s a campaign video and you get sucked into the story, then Joel’s take to the camera breaks that 4th wall they just built in a matter of seconds. It was a great little moment.

Well, keep in mind, Joel hasn’t used any firm language when referring to the new cast, either. I know Felicia and Jonah are excited as hell to join, and will certainly accept if offered. I just have a feeling they’re just dodging some kind of legal or PR issue – Joel can’t promise anything, let alone actually invite anyone, until the campaign is over.

I mean, it’s the internet, right? Everything he’s saying is being immaculately recorded, and fans of EVERY stripe get touchy when promises are broken. He, and the OG cast, are just handling it with kid gloves, is all.

Love Felicia Day being the new mad. But I have one problem: Are we supposed to be believe that Dr. Forrester actually… you know.. had relations with a real live woman? Or did he create his daughter in a lab? I’d have to go with the later.

Yeah, Dr. F. and Frank’s one date with actual live girls didn’t pan out so well, if I recall correctly. I’m guessing a cloning experiment, with a few bugs to iron out.

And I hope it won’t sound too knee-jerk to say “A black-comic Servo?” Even for those who like the new Afro-centric supporting comics on the Daily Show, you should know that we are getting Chris Rock BACK for the next Oscar ceremony–I hope the previous unfortunate instance illustrates my point without too much ethnic-baiting debates over comic ability and source versatility.

Awesome news, but… there is another detail in the update that should be getting MSTies heart beats increasing to a dangerous level. Joel pretty much confirmed that if 3.3 million is raised by the end of Turkey Day, he will make a few of the KTMA episodes available!!!!

    Freaking out yet?!

When Joel issued the 3 episode challenge last week, I sent him a heartfelt message, asking him to consider making those episodes K01, K02, and K03, for those interested. I was as kind as I could be about it, and I posted the request numerous times in the comments, asking other fans to continue to show support for the idea. I was delighted to see so many people backing me up!

Looks like we were heard. :)

I don’t know about you, but releasing even two or three KTMA episodes is MORE than enough incentive to back this sucker, and ensure it gets to 3.3 million by Thursday night!

Judging from the preview, I think Dr F did what Erich Von Stroheim did in the movie Alrarune. :-)

So in the update, Joel mentions:
“Then, if we can reach $3.3M – our second goal – before the Turkey Day ’15 Marathon ends, we’ve got a much bigger bonus reward for you… and it’s something that a lot of you have been asking for!

I don’t want to get ahead of myself, so I’ll tell you about that challenge in another update this week. Hardcore MSTies, I’ll just give you a little hint: if you help us make the newest episodes of MST3K, you might just get to see the oldest episodes of MST3K.”

I don’t want to read too much into it, but it sounds like he’s teasing a release of the 30-minute pilot with him introducing the characters and riffing a piece of “The Green Slime”.

I’ve mentioned this elsewhere already, but regardless of whether or not you like Day as an actress, there’s really nobody better at creating a cult TV series and distributing it on the Internet without studio backing. You may not think she’s a good choice in front of the camera, but I think she’s objectively a great choice behind it.

Jim Mallon dropped some clips from the lost episodes on the old mst3k.com along with some memories and clips of other work he did with Kevin Murphy. He said there was more to come, but it never did.

I wonder if Joel has figured out a way to release the missing KTMA episodes without any legal issues. Or maybe those copyrights have expired anyway.

I’m not that interested in watching the KTMA episodes, but he certainly has my curiosity. We’ll see if it meets the goal.

Still, I think Felicia Day’s a good choice for the next Mad. I liked that line about Jonah being a short stack of pancakes. It’s an interesting angle to explore, that tension between Mad and test subject. As for the origin, I feel Pearl had something to do with it, whether in being the genetic template or using Clay’s DNA without his knowledge.

Except that Joel says “episodes” plural, and the oldest episodes at that.

He would have to assume that the unseen KTMAs would be a big selling point for diehard fans. That’s more than likely what he would use to entice high pledges.

As for the news at hand, this is all very encouraging and entertaining. Seeing Felicia, Baron’s Servo, Hampton’s Crow, and Jonah bantering with Joel was hilarious and fun. And that’s what MST3K is quite skilled at!

Based on all the information that’s been put out there and all the videos that have been shot so far, I’m led to believe that the pledgers’ support of the reboot will ultimately be very well-placed.

I’ve watched Felicia Day on her “Geek and Sundry” YouTube channel for years and in particular her show “Co-optitude” where she plays old-fashioned video games with her twin brother (I’m assuming twin because they share the same birthday although I’ve yet to read anything “official”).

Felicia is funny and very well suited to play all sorts of roles. However, being an “evil” person will be an interesting challenge for her. I understand that some people might not like Joel going all “new” with the cast, but keep in mind that 90%+ of the show will be the movie riffs which mean that it will all come down to the writing and delivery at the films themselves just like the old days.

I love Rifftrax to death and with this new cast for MST3K my hope is that they provide a unique voice and strong riffing as well. Oh yea, with plenty of Felicia if possible. ;-)

I know there are some huge Felicia Day fans out there, but I think I’ve only ever seen her in Buffy and Dr. Horrible. She’s entertaining enough and would be good for the cast and great for the writing crew. I thought the same thing. I am not completely sure I like the idea…believe it or not, I’m on the side of a new cast. Watching an old cast go through the same thing again always comes off as depressing. (See the later Star Trek (original cast) movies, Roger Moore’s last 2 Bond movies.) I am sooo glad that Star Wars is focusing on a new cast with minor roles from the old cast. Watching a 50-something year old cast running around pretending to panicked over movie-sign, or demonstrating the latest evil invention just seems sort of pathetic.

I’d rather take the chance that it can work with a new cast. I’m am totally with Joel that I don’t want 3 episodes, I want 100. Bringing back the old cast and trying to do the same old thing seems to be a sure way to stop at 100.

My nephew (whose in his mid-20s) tweeted his excitement today that Felicia Day is going to be MST3K. I ask him if he’d seen the show, and he said “I little bit, mostly Mike Nelson stuff.” I think Joel is very, very shrewd about this. He knows he’ll get most of the old MSTies back watching his show. However, he needs more than the old MSTies, he needs the younger generation to want to watch it too. Not saying he picked them JUST BECAUSE of this, but he made his picks knowing he wanted to interest the younger nerd generation. Us oldster will come for the MST3K, the millenials will come for Day and Ray.

Oh – and someone mentioned not having seen “Dr Horrible”. I am not amongst those that thinks its genius. It is very amusing and well worth a look, but only saw it the one time. It was available on Netflix stream for a long time.

These videos were all filmed weeks ago, probably all on the same day (Joel mentioned the Yahoo Turkey day videos had to be done early, possibly at the same time as the KS videos), before the reaction from the rest of the old guard.

I’ve never followed a kickstarter but I think Joel and/or his consultants are working this pretty well.

And surely Magic Voice will be in the mix. I loved her occasionally brilliant input to the show, but I don’t think she was seen as a character in the same way the ‘bots were. But still, throwing that in as another boost down the line would not be a bad idea.

I have to say that while I’m been *extremely* skeptical (despite backing it) that this reboot will appeal to me in any way, this last video actually made me laugh (particularly the “Biscuits and gravy guy” line). The ‘bot’s voices actually sound *much* better (making me skeptical they did all these videos at the same time, as others have concluded), even Tom (I now have faith both those chosen can get pretty close to what we think of as “traditional”, which should be the case for them at least).

And Felicia — I was kind of “meh” in that I thought she was a competent but not particularly interesting actress. But I think she really sold it — so much so that I think she was the only one with real charisma (which perhaps is as it should be — neither Mike nor Joel came off as dynamic, but rather laid back, with the Mads supplying the over-the-top scenery chewing aspects of the show).

This is the first time I’ve actually been excited (yeah, no one particularly cares if one old man is excited, not even my wife :>) I think I’m going to wait until Turkey Day, but I’ll actually up my pledge (still don’t think we’ll get more than six episodes, but six of these might be worth it).

My only hesitation now is what movies they will pick — I’m of the “we want OLDER movies, certainly nothing made past 1970 but the older the better” camp. If that happens this could be really, really good (well, there’s also the question of who’ll do the writing, but I have to believe Joel will at least be part of that).

hmmmm…. link should have been THIS.

When I first saw the silhouette I thought “Well turn my crank to Frank”, but I am not sure that’s really what would happen. I would love to have Frank Conniff’s humor injected back into the show. (He has such a massive knowledge of ’50s – ’70s entertainment having grown up in that you can bet the old-school humor would still show up.) He’s also seems to be the one guy that hasn’t had a “deny, deny, deny” policy.

However, he’s very much an “east coast” guy, which was one of the problems with running CT. (The crew was from all over the map, and it was hard to get them all in one place.) So, I could see him writing, but not sure he would want to go to LA to shoot the show. A potential 12-episode season could take 3-4 months to shoot.

I am feeling more confident about them getting to at least nine episodes. They should hit the half-way mark today or tomorrow. I think there’s a good chance the Turkey Day marathon will push them past the $3.3 million mark. I still think $5.5 million is going to be a tough stretch unless there are a lot of people holding off out there. (Though I still wonder if they get to something like $4.8 million that SHOUT or someone wouldn’t kick in the last $700K to get a “full season order”. Production of new episodes can ONLY boost sales of OLD episodes, so it would be a double investment.)
