So….they’re adding the Nerd Movies to the SciFi Fan-Kissup.
That’s one way to really start wearing on a reunion.

Alright! Now we’re talking. These were all things I’ve been wanting for a while, but was too afraid to ask.
Can’t believe how much better this reunion deal just keeps getting.

It sounded like they were already planning to do Star Wars Episode VII anyway, but I don’t mind getting it for free with my donation. And it’s certainly been a while since they’ve done a TV show that wasn’t on Nat Geo. Honestly I’m a lot more interested in the idea of a DVD release of an event I’ll be at complete with special features.

Now if they could just get the films for the third and fourth Rifftrax Live 2016 shows to a point where they could be announced…

The TFA riff sounds interesting, provided they’ll take a pledge to heavily restrict the prequel hatred. That’s reached the “beating a dead horse” stage.

Anyone who watches TFA with the intent of making JarJar jokes just….has no idea what they’re talking about.
In which case, I say they make a pledge mandatory.

(Kylo Ren, unfortunately, is MADE for Mike jokes.)

We’ve passed the line for the TFA riff. If only they were making it available for backers at a lower level. Guess I’ll have to buy it when it’s available, since I don’t have an extra $65 to add to my donation. I already went more than I wanted to on the MST3K kickstarter with a $35 donation back in November.

(Stormtroopers slowly back away as Kylo Ren wrecks the room.)

MIKE: This is worse than when we caught him playing with his Darth Vader action figure.

I think sometimes Rifftrax gets trapped into doing an entire franchise do to popular demand. I know they weren’t too keen about finishing up the Harry Potter movies. Still, I doubt they’re burned out on Star Wars just yet. It can be tricky riffing on sequels unless they provide a lot of new material(there were certainly MST3K episodes where doing a sequel to a previous film became a bit repetitive). In Episode VII, I’ll be shocked if they don’t feel it necessary to throw in the whole routine with “I think I’ve seen this happen in another movie.” “Raiders of the Lost Arc?” “No.” “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade?” “No.” etc…

Not too interested in seeing either of these riffs, really. I’d love to see them do some MP3s for recent incompetent trainwrecks they probably wouldn’t be able to get the VOD rights to like “Foodfight!” or “Fateful Findings” instead, but I understand that those titles don’t have 1/10 the marquee value of “Star Wars” or GoT. The DVD / Blu-Ray of the reunion show with behind-the-scenes bonus features is enticing, though…

What they really need to do is stop targeting the latest blockbusters.

Remember that period from 2007 to 2008 where they would just spoof any movie? “The Wicker Man” (Nick Cage version), Eragon, Aeon Flux, The Happening…these weren’t MEGA-BLOCKBUSTERS, just recent movies that deserved getting riffed. They needed to stop going after franchises like Star Wars, Transformers, Harry Potter, and “Fast and Furious”.

If they’re going to do blockbusters, make it Retro-blockbusters. Why can’t we get a Riff for “Independence Day?” Or “The Fifth Element”? The live riffs of the 90’s “Godzilla” and “Starship Troopers” were a step in the right direction, but I don’t think everything needs to be done live, necessarily…

The reason they go mostly go after the latest mega blockbusters when doing MP3s is because those sell WAY better than anything else. Back in the early days they hadn’t quite figured that out yet and they were much more experimental. Apparently casual Rifftrax customers aren’t inclined to go out of their way to acquire films they don’t have really easy access to. Getting to a point where they could license films for VOD distribution allowed them to riff movies without having to worry if the customer was going to have it in their DVD collection or not. Hopefully the new Rifftrax app will make the MP3 library even more accessable. Also, they already did Independence Day and The Fifth Element as MP3s. A live riff of Independence Day seems unlikely since it’s owned by Fox. The Fifth Element is a Sony movie so they could probably get new material out of it with Kevin and Bill on board alongside Mike. However it’s unlikely it’ll be released on VOD form, so our best bet would be a new “live” MP3, like The Room.

What they really need to do is stay profitable and stay in business, not make content exclusively for Tom, Dick, and wonderfly.

It seems selfish to ask them to waste their time on those types of titles if only a fraction of the people are buying them.

Maybe you don’t like the blockbusters. The right people will.

Hey, if wonderfly’s ruled the world, that’s what I’d like to see. Cause everyone in the world would take a back seat to me.

Seriously though, I don’t like making fun of popular blockbusters. If I watch the Rifftrax version of Star Wars, and then go back and watch the un-Riffed version, my mind will start filling in the jokes…I don’t want to ruin my classic films.

But that’s just me. There’s got to be a middle ground between “bad film” (like “Mesa of Lost Women”) and blockbuster film (like Star Wars).

…and sorry, I missed/forgot that they did Independence Day…are you sure they did “The Fifth Element”?

The problem is that the “Nerd Movies” they want to do–so that Mike can poke at Transformers fans and pasty-faced comic-book geeks, and Kevin can get out more of his rage at Tolkien adaptations–are the blockbusters that can only be released as MP3 because they, gasp, cost money. And if they want to put out a movie we can look at, that usually means Public Domain.
Which, like the PD movies at MST3K, either means digging Manos up again for another bash, digging up their old Legend Films days of Reefer Madness and Swing Parade, or delving the truly bizarre bottom of the mom-and-pop shelves, like Mesa and Supersonic Man, to find the public domain titles most haven’t heard of.
Which has yielded up some gold, like Ice Cream Bunny and Balloonland, but has also moved the momentum back to strange movies again, and away from the cheap pop-pokes of “Avatar Smurf jokes” and Shia LaBeouf riffs…Jokes, real jokes, by comedy professionals.

It’s actually something where more money to do bigger films is NOT going to help RT, since necessity (and poverty) have turned out to be a better source of comic invention.

I don’t care what they riff — blockbusters, classics, or obscure weird stuff — it’s all fun, and funny.

Not that there haven’t been a few duds, just as there were on MST3K. (I’m looking at you, Castle of Fu Manchu!)

Popular blockbusters? Aren’t blockbusters popular by definition? Anyway if you’re worried about remembering jokes from the Rifftrax when watching Star Wars movies, you could always wait a while until you forget the jokes and then watch them again with fresh eyes. How well do you remember movies you haven’t seen since say, 2012? I’m not sure what you’d define as a “middle ground” film, but they’ve riffed over 200 movies and shorts at this point, so I think they’ve got a pretty good variety as it is. Anyway, since the 2000’s ended they’ve been focusing more and more on VOD titles, so they haven’t really been doing blockbusters too often anyway. Heck they haven’t done a Star Wars title since January 2010. Yes, Mike did The Fifth Element. It was actually the second Rifftrax he did after he riffed Road House. http://www.rifftrax.com/the-fifth-element

    re mp3s –

The people who actually own crappy mindless blockbuster movies so they can watch them over and over in their homes.

And the people who think crappy mindless blockbuster movies should be mocked and riffed.

Is there really much overlap between those two groups?
