When Trace Left the Show –
When Trace Beaulieu left the show I was both sad and mad. Although I am a big fan of Mary Jo and love what she did with Pearl the departure of Dr. F was a sinister event for me.
After “Braveheart”, I gave up on cinema, and kinda life in general.
When they changed Darrens on Bewitched. Still haven’t recovered from that one.
When it was determined that comic book characters had to be dark and gritty. I’m sure we can find a happy medium between Adam West Batman and super depressing modern Batman.
The day Calvin & Hobbes disappeared from the papers,and Hagar the Horrible didn’t.
It bubbles up constantly. From Bobby Vee and Frankie Avalon through Gary Lewis and the Playboys, then through the Sound of Music, Signs and Green Lantern,and finally to the introduction of Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. As Dave Barry once said, most popular culture is crap.

Oh, I just saw a headline over at IMDB: The director of Les Miserables is bringing Cats to the big screen. That’s not hell bubbling up, that’s Satan rending the earth, setting up a throne, and going: “Bwah! Hah! Hah! Hah!”
For me, Hell bubbled up when radio station owners discovered you don’t need reporters or DJs (or employees) but let computers and satellites decide programming. That’s why I can’t work in that medium anymore.
Popular culture-wise, it was when I noticed Comedy Central thought six shows was enough for a season of MST3K without TV’s Frank. That jolted me.
Oh, and the day Fox took the sky from me (look it up).

Every good thing can begat many bad things. Here’s something I think MST3K begat…
The culture of young kids (my daughter does this) of watching people watch other things (video games / trailers)…MST3K is really the grandfather of all this, but cheesy movies, in their awfulness, have their merits as being watched outright…so watching people making jokes about them is dobule the pleasure. But watching a video of some guy screaming “OMG..IT”S BATMAN..LOOK WHAT BATMAN DID!” is the nadir of this. And my daughter and her friends LOVE these videos. LOVE them. :-*

No, it gets worse — you have people commenting on other people watching other people watching other things — and don’t get me started on people who comment on other people commenting on other people watching other people watching other things…
For me, I first started noticing Hell bubbling up when I saw a little-known sitcom called “Full House”…
I remember that when I first saw it on TV. I questioned the world when I saw it. Thing is, when we kept revisiting this moment, we found other things people didn’t notice, like the Russian guy stepping on the endline when he made his pass to Belov. Maybe the hockey team winning eight years later evened things out.
Texting –
Do I need to describe the ways that texting and its various permutations is the very froth of Hell’s foaming essence? It engendures short attention spans, poor conversational skills, and perhaps the evolutionary death of the English language itself, the most creative tongue in existence today. As Shakespeare would not have said… OMG!
When local news stopped having brief “Opening This Weekend” movie reviews and started reporting box office totals on Monday.

This not only relates to MST3K, but science fiction in general: Bonnie Hammer’s control of the Sci-Fi Channel and the overall devolution of that network.
It used to be a channel with genuinely interesting TV shows and movies, and then it became a disposable wasteland with dismissive executives who publicly insulted and dehumanized its core fanbase.
Let’s all just agree now that there are going to be LOTS of disagreements in this thread. (I actually disagree with much of Joel’s commentary in the original sketch.) So, yeah, Hell’s a deeply personal thing, just like Heaven. For me, Hell has bubbled up in a variety forms over the years, from line-dancing to hair metal to the Kardashians. I also distinctly remember seeing Beelzebub the night Married With Children premiered. But, again, that’s just me.
When I first heard about snapchat. I don’t know when it actually came into existence, but when I read something about it was about when I decided, “I don’t know what this new stuff is, and I don’t care.” Tumblr is a close second. I still don’t get or like Tumblr. I’m not a luddite or anything, I even have an iPhone, but so many of these things seem to strive for being ephemeral and prize the inconsequential.
The invention of Twitter. Never, ever, EVER, have we required the knee-jerk thoughts of every low-grade moron on the planet broadcast to everyone else as they happen! It is the ruination of society, and of humanity, all because of (as was said in Forbidden Planet), “monsters from the id.”
Oh, and if Twitter weren’t bad enough:
Kardashians.
It bubbled up for me when someone with no musical talent could merely talk to music, being sure to include as many f-words and derogatory terms about women as possible, and it was called singing.

When scientific discussions/considerations like evolution, global warming, etc. were
taken over from rational discussion to be used as political/ideological fodder, and
thereby solutions to ills for the Earth and humanity foreclosed.

That era of WB cartoons was incredible. Batman, Batman Beyond, Histeria, Animaniacs, lesser-knowns like Earthworm Jim, and Pinky and the Brain. This was some fun stuff, and when I was “in between jobs” after college, I knew I could at least enjoy some silliness in the afternoons or Saturday morning.
Then they had to kill it with a stupid idea forced on them by the networks. There was some fun stuff to come later, but the craziness and creativity that Batman and Animaniacs had was drawing to a close, and it hasn’t been the same since.
Here’s someone who gets it.
The day the E! Network came on the air.
When the term twerking entered our lexicon.
When the American Game Show went the way of the Dragon. No longer did we have classic shows like Treasure Hunt, Jackpot and Match Game. Now we have overblown Deal or No Deal. Something inside me wither and died.
When Carl Stalling retired, Milt Franklyn died, and they cut Bill Lava’s budget. Warner Bros cartoons without good accompanying music were the beginning of the end of my childhood.

When some movie executive thought it would be a good idea to give Carrot Top a movie.
George Lucas making Greedo shoot first.
When All Night Network News/Poker started replacing late-night local movies.
When UPN, Fox, Pax and the WB bought up all the city sports-team UHF stations and made them show network shows (and then UPN orphaned theirs).
When Cartoon Network railed their stoner/schoolyard tantrums against vintage Hanna-Barbera reruns.
When Disney Channel pushed their 60’s-70’s reruns to 2am, and then removed them completely.
When the Bravo exec officially came Out and turned a Criterion-style foreign-film/opera channel into “Real Housewives” and “Project Runway”.
When Nick TVLand stopped showing classic-rerun end-credits, and started making original sitcoms about sexy cougars.
When The Office started getting Emmys, and sitcoms stopped being funny or friendly.
When networks wanted their shows to be as grim as HBO and AMC shows, so they’d get Emmys too.
When “Once Upon a Time” advertised “It’s like a big-budget Hollywood movie every week!”
When TV Guide promoted their new entertainment-gossip magazine with “Who wants to read a bunch of boring TV listings anyway?”
Binge-watching.
A generation that knows NO OTHER form of TV-viewing than Binge-watching, and bulimically prides themselves on losing hours of sleep and free time to do so.
Did I mention Binge-watching?

it was when they did the tap dancing routine in the 1999 Oscars (look this one up kids).
I don’t have to, I remember the “Dance salute to Saving Private Ryan”, and Debbie Allen has ALWAYS been a minion of Hell.
But, as Joel pointed out, there are moments when we see the face of Hell, unite and back away, like when the Oscars gave up on opening numbers not only after Rob Lowe and Snow White, but after Telly Savalas, Red Buttons and Pat Morita singing.
And they even finally backed away from thirty years of Bruce “SW Holiday Special” Villanch as writer after that Anne Hathaway/James Franco thing. (Gee, Davey…) :)
I agree, but I”ll go you one further. The day “Keeping up with the Kardashians” began. Never before had television seen such stupidity.
Jersey Shore was a pretty icky show as well.

I used to be perpetually angry about all the things in this thread being brought up and not much fun to be around and I would bellyache to anyone within earshot. Now I still get angry but I take a deep breath and try to have a positive mental attitude and I’m a lot more pleasant to be around. Thanks, Weed!
