I hope they have the new cast on How Did This Get Made. I know Jonah was on once, but it was an oddly short episode.

Are you sure about that? How can know that Tom and Crow weren’t tracked down by a Gizmonics hit squad thanks to the transmitters that were in the RAM chips they were constantly scarfing in Season One and attached to their load pans, while Mike was unable to stop it because he had expired due to his all rice diet?

Well, we know from the trailer that Kinga and TVSOTVF had nothing to do with it: Jonah is a “space trucker” who was lured to D13’s new moonbase by a (snicker!) distress call, and is trapped on the planet (rather than the satellite), but Crow and Servo were already his ship crew from the beginning.
I’m guessing he bought them in used salvage–Probably not from the same Jawa vehicle, though, that one was blown up.

personally i hope they’re not recreations; i’d rather they’re considered the originals… just wouldn’t feel right. no way the callbacks would make any sense then, even if their bit-brains got hacked/dl’d/rebooted by kinga!

mildly hoping that when they first appear on the bridge, it might go a little like:
servo: huh? wha’? hey chewie… we’re home!
    crow: rrraaaggghhh!

Where’d you see that? I don’t see Crow or Servo in any of the shots where Jonah’s in his space truck; I gathered that he got shot up to the SoL and they were already there.

(And while we don’t see the exterior of the SoL, that’s definitely the SoL bridge. Presumably Kinga shoots him up there after trapping him and pulling him down to her base — which looks like it may be called Moon 13.)

To the best of my knowledge no tissue paper was used in the construction of MST3K. Plywood, plastic, and thrift store products? Yeah, sure. Of course, you don’t have take my word for it. Ask Brad’s wife down at Cracker Barrel. Oh wait. They fired her. And on Brad’s birthday. I hear Sampo was really torqued about it.

Interesting list of movies, if it’s accurate. Nothing in black and white or made past the 80s, but I’ve always wanted to see them do Reptilicus and Starcrash, and I was kind of worried the movies would skew a little too good since they have to be HD. And even though Rifftrax already did Wizards of the Lost Kingdom I hope New MST3K is doing it too (maybe that’s why Rifftrax pulled it). I do feel they are kind of missing out a little when all the movies have to be color and in widescreen. I doubt there are widescreen versions of stuff like Final Sacrifice, Werewolf or Future War, which are some of my favorite episodes. Still, this is exciting!

My take– which is really a hopeful guess– is that this is analogous to the early Sci-Fi era, where there were no shorts, everything was SF and from Sci-Fi’s library, and the first bunch were back and white.

We got a better (and IMO healthier, if that makes sense) mix later, including that Gumby short, (though we didn’t get any more old-timey serials).

My favorite MST3k shows are the failed 70’s and 80’s series stitched together to make a movie. Codename Cubic Zirconia Head, Riding with Death and Master Ninja. I loved the Film Ventures credits at the beginning and end.

Any chance we’ll see some more of these episodes err I mean movies in the reboot? I hope so. Preferably from the early 80’s epoch. When the music in Master Ninja sounds like it is being eaten by the tape deck it just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

True. And we know from the kickstarter updates that they WILL be on The SOL or a successor to it,since Joel shared drawings of the slightly changed design.

EricJ: It’s part of Kinga Forrester’s evil plan to reject our reality, and substitute her own.;)

OTOH, when dealing with a, er, overenthusiastic fan community–especially one that tends to ascribe superpowers to the show and its creators beyond the lot of mortal men–it’s important to get as many solid FACTS about the show nailed down ahead of time, and let that dominate the future tone of the discussions by the time it airs.
Otherwise, they might run into the same problems RT had in establishing itself as a god-like cult, in that fans might be looking at S11 and saying “Joel said they might be getting any movie…Cool, d’you think they’ll get Batman v. Superman?”Nnno…Just–okay, no.

Even if it might be disappointing to know what imaginary movies they might not be getting, or that they might’ve only gone to a limited number of wells for inexpensive PD titles like the old series or Cinematic Titanic did, at least knowing we’ll get two of the Land That Time Forgot/At the Earth’s Core trilogy (“People That Time Forgot” is playing unriffed on Amazon Prime) is a perfect context to set the series in before watching, and enjoying it for what it IS, rather than for what some more devoted fans WANT it to be.

EricJ: Wouldn’t it make more sense NOT to post a speculative list since the episodes are not verified specifically because Joel did not want to post the list? And whatever happened to information is power? So what if you recognize a movie? Who do you think is going to blow you because you recognized an image from a lame movie? The internet is made for people like you: those who think their random, lame-ass comments impress people and make you feel some sort of self-worth.

NoNDA: IMHO, this list needs to be posted EVERYWHERE, if only to save us from the endless “I hope they do (insert title of movie) for season 11!” posts.

I disagree. The show was never supposed to be about what movie is being shown. Who watches an episode based on the movie? Casual viewers and poseurs. Not true fans who watch just to watch. Why else would anyone watch Manos every other week on Comet? Just because it is there. And if we cared what the movies were, we wouldn’t have supported the kickstarter until we knew what they were.

Also, this list doesn’t dis-spell any “I hope they” since only two of those movies can actually be identified. If anything, it causes more, especially by the “I hope we get this for season 12” crowd.

#1. How many people are actually doing that?
#2. Who gives a damn if they are?
The episodes will come out one way or another, people will be either right or wrong or a mixture, and life will go on.

I watch episodes based on the movie that is shown. Some of the films they did I just do not like to rewatch that much. For example, I like watching Pod People or Teen Age Strangler but I do not watch the Starfighters much at all because I found the film too boring even with the riffs.

Anyone else think the new bridge set is even cheesier looking than the bridge sets on the original show? Seems to be lacking a viewscreen for one thing. The Sci Fi era set was much more detailed, even the second CC season was more detailed than this new one.

  32. Mike "ex-genius" Kelley says:

Starfighters to me is one of the best movies they did (and eminently rewatchable). To me, it’s pretty simple as to what makes a good movie for MST3K to riff:

    1) The moviemakers either thought or at least TRIED to make a good, important movie.
    2) They failed miserably

The second is why I don’t like RT doing major films, which often DO succeed at least on some levels (even if they are just popcorn films). The first is why films like Sharknado don’t do it for me (and why it’s VERY hard to riff a low-budget comedy, where the film makers are just happy to having an image come out). Recent films are also very iffy, in any case, because it takes at least a bit of time and perspective to correctly judge whether a film is truly a failure (many films improve greatly with age, some lose quite a bit of their original goodness). I honestly think it takes a very exceptional film made in the last 15 years to be riffed properly (Tommy Wise is exceptional in oh so many ways), as filmmakers have become very sophisticated even when making the lowest of the low budget films (so are either in on the joke or are acting as if).

The posted list (and I’m very glad we have it) shows some good sense in making the choices — as others have mentioned, I wish there were more 50’s films and at least a couple b/w films but kids today won’t put up with those no matter how expertly they are riffed. But those times and films were SO earnest and failed SO many times they are ripe for the riffing.

Bridge looking less detailed? Not in the clip to me, but I think it’s going to be VERY hard to judge anything from that. Good news is we are less than two weeks away from having all revealed.

I’m not 100% sold on the sets but I think they’ll grow on me. I’m looking at them like KTMA sets, they were made quickly on a relatively small budget. I imagine that if/when they make season 12 the sets will be different due to an increase in time and money.

And hey, as long as the riffing is good I’m happy.

S5’s Village of the Giants is a movie I might watch, but the riffing wasn’t that great. Monster a Go-Go is a movie I would never watch, and the riffing was hysterical. The secret’s something in between.
That’s the thing about “found” humor, you (ie. the comic) don’t know what’s in the box until you open it, and don’t have any baggage to bring to it–As opposed to RT’s recent movies saying “Watch us give Twilight and Avatar what they DESERVE!”, or “Women were housewives in the 50’s!” And when you don’t know from which direction the next joke is coming, it’s that sillier of a surprise element.
(And while that sounds like it’s in favor of not knowing the list, those who are skeptical would rather know, even if it’s more comfortable to play it safe.)

It just comes down to a matter of instinct of how to deal the unexpected situation, and like the old saying about comic instinct, either you have it, OR…
Even though Joel was a bit timid in saying “We can’t take B/W 4:3 movies from the 50’s, it’s HD now!” (yeah, I remember when the Blu-ray companies used to say that), it’s a good selection of 80’s movies that were completely earnest in not being very good, and definitely not being what one might expect going in.
FMM, the only black-mark is “Reptilicus” since I can’t look at that string-dangling monster attacking the city without seeing the old stock clips that would turn up as gags on the old “Monkees” show, but otherwise, looks good.

It probably depends on what you’re using to watch Netflix. I know on my XB1, when it shrinks the screen during the end credits, I can just used the controller to select the small screen and hit A to make it full screen again. I’m sure there’s something similar you can do on whatever you’re using.
