Media Mentions

Okay here is the spot to post links to media articles about the relaunch — and I think they are going to start coming fast and furious now.

Joe Otterson at Variety has a story.

Simon Abrams at Vulture.com has one.

Keith Phipps at Uproxx.com has one.

Joel and crew get a mention in this piece by H.B. Duran of alistdaily.com.

And here’s a piece by Jon Niccum of the Kansas City Star about the impending visit of “The Mads Are Back.”

See any more?

Joe Otterson of Variety seems to have a low opinion of the upper Midwest. “The frozen wasteland”, etc. Uff da!

This one at Splitsider is from a couple weeks ago, but it’s the most informative I’ve seen:

As the hype train (to Mundo Fine) rolls on, here’s hoping we get some talk show appearances from the cast and writers.

Jonah, Baron, and Hampton will be appearing on @midnight on Tuesday, April 18.

yah, i saw a bunch of those yesterday morn… think maybe you missed one, a gizmodo (prefixed io9 or something like that, so the link ended up being io9.gizmodo.something something…) well, just “google news” for mst3k and you’ll see a ton that came out just march 30 roundabouts… nothing super-substantial yet, but it’s nice to get to nibble little bits at least till next week!

All these articles have pretty much the same info. Enough with the hype, let’s start the show.

I like the behind-the-scenes photos in the Vulture piece, though.

And hey, the Mads article has confirmation that Shout is paying royalties, which is great; I’d heard that elsewhere but hadn’t seen it confirmed by a primary source until now. (Frustratingly, if you do a search for mst3k profit sharing, the top results were written by…me. I should probably update that blog post now that I’ve got new information.)

The Uproxx piece describes the original concept – it would be a reunion with Joel, Mike, both Servos, and both Crows, switching off in the theater from episode to episode. But this proved totally unworkable, and so was replaced with the “MST3K:TNG” we got.

I’m still hoping, maybe for the 30th anniversary, there’s a “Three Doctors” style reunion episode with an appropriately handwaved explanation.

For the past month or so, this has been visible on the official Mads Are Back website:

It was previously stated on this site that Shout Factory was not paying us any royalties for the classic episodes of MST3K. That was completely and totally untrue. Don’t know how that slipped by, but Shout has been nothing but kind and generous with us.

Has there been any mention of the next MST3K DVD set from Shout? I’m wondering if they’ve hit a roadblock trying getting the rights to the last eps of the show.

On Twitter and Facebook Shout said they have nothing to announce yet. I think if they had hit a permanent roadblock, they’d probably let us know. When The Play Mystie for Me bonus DVD for the last set replaced the previously announced KTMA host segments DVD, it mentioned that PMFM was already prepared for a future release, so it sounds like they’ve got at least one more set in the works.

Thanks for the update, MJ23 – I forgot about the disc substitutions. Maybe they’re just hung up on getting one of the ep rights finalized.

Thanks for the link. I figured Shout must have done something in that direction seeing as Bill and Mary Jo are both involved with the new show after being vocal with their complaints over the lack of royalties from BBI, but it’s good to have confirmation.

(I wonder if they still get more for episodes you buy from Rifftrax, since that should mean they’re getting a cut from both Shout and Rifftrax, or if it’s a wash.)

Well, after the 2 or 3 remaining Pubic Domain episodes, we hit the Great Wall that is Wade Williams, Toho, Paramount Pictures, and Susan Hart – unless, of course, Shout! dazzles us with another miracle.

Maybe if the new season takes off they’ll have more clout (and maybe some of Netflix’s influence). I suppose the downside is that if the new season takes off, rightsholders might start asking for more money.

I’m behind a firewall at the moment and can’t access a current version of the list, but I think there are at least a couple non-PD movies that are still unreleased but likely releases (Amazing Transparent Man and Delta Knights).

I’m also not sure about the current status of Paramount’s licensees (Olive and Warner); I know that rights reversion was up for a number of their titles but I’m not sure if they renewed or let them lapse.

And it’s gauche to say it, but Williams and Hart of course won’t be around forever, and who knows how the future owners might feel.
