RIP Roger Moore

Switzerland–Roger Moore, the dapper British actor who brought tongue-in-cheek humor to the James Bond persona in seven films, eclipsing his television career, which had included starring roles in at least five series, died here on Tuesday. He was 89.

His obit appears here because he was mentioned in a host segment in episode 311- IT CONQUERED THE WORLD.

The New York Times has the story.

:) yep goalie; i’d just finished watching the whole ep too! totally classic ep… miss piggy crooning “slow boat to china” at roger as he tries to squirm out of her clutches is just – too classic. he played it without a single hint that he might only be performing with a puppet… class act! (i can imagine before shooting that, frank oz saying something like, “pardon if i get a bit too fresh with ya rog,” and roger going “oh noew, noew… all in good fun!”)

  5. He is the 2nd Inspector Clouseau to pass away, after Peter Sellers.

For those who don’t know he portrayed Clouseau in a small cameo in “Curse of the Pink Panther” (1983).

He’s also the last of the ‘celebrity siblings’ in the Moore family to die. Dudley, Dinty, and Mary Tyler all predeceased him.

  7. As James Bond, Roger Moore was no match for Sean Connery. But he was involved in good causes, and that’s what’s important.

    RIP

  8. I grew up with him, first in Maverick, and then as The Saint. His Bond was not my favorite, not by far, but his television work was exemplary (check out “The Persuaders” with Tony Curtis as well) and he was a man who knew well that acting was kind of a silly profession and he was lucky to make money at it.

    R.I.P., Commander.

  9. Speaking of The Pink Panther, it’s also been a whole year since Burt Kwouk died. :(

Although I was a fan of Roger Moore as the Saint, there’s only one James Bond–Sean Connery. Even though he replaced Connery as Bond because Sean was considered getting too old for the part,(also Connery was tired of the job and wanted too much money) Moore was 3 years older than he was.

Moonraker is next up for me. Just watched Spy Who Loved me a few weeks ago. LOVE that theme song but the movie is far below the previous Live and Let Die and Man with Golden gun. I remember LOVING Moonraker as a kid. Moore was worthy of the role.

I grew up with both Connery and Moore as Bond, and although they’re different, I cannot say that I think one is better than the other. Luckily, we don’t have to choose!

  13. Growing up in the 70s, he was more Bond to me than Sean Connery. There were a fair number of James Bond toys then, toy cars mostly. That underwater lotus.

I also thought that too, growing up in the 70’s as well. Sean Connery was the TV Bond but Roger Moore was the movie Bond since we only saw Connery in reruns on TV while we saw Moore’s Bond on the big screen at the movie theaters. I enjoyed both of their performances, though, and still do.

Sigh. I know Sean Connery was a cooler and more badass James Bond. But I didn’t see any Connery Bond films until I was a teenager. Moore was the Bond I grew up with. I still remember seeing The Spy who Loved Me when I was about seven. I was in awe when the Lotus turned in to a submarine and wanted my Dad to have our VW Van converted into a submarine hybrid. I wasn’t interested in my father’s explanations of the impracticality or the fact that the ocean near where we lived was largely opaque to the human eye.

In addition to all that’s been mentioned Moore was excellent opposite Anthony Perkins in FFolkes.

Really liked “ffolkes” (note: lower case is proper spelling :>). Any man who loves cats can’t be all bad .

What a backhanded compliment! Since you so glibly and MISTAKENLY pronounced your OPINION as OBJECTIVE FACT, please allow me to balance those scales you so blindly depressed with your malformed internet thumb…

Moore completely ECLIPSED Connery as Bond.

I must say, it is in extremely poor taste to speak ill of the dead, even if merely passive aggressively juxtaposing your Connery pronouncement with Moore’s charitable work.

Save it for a Connery forum. It is inappropriate on this very specific Moore obituary topic.

(This is my first foray into ~registered lands~ here … I daresay I will be muzzled soon. I particularly enjoy how – after sign in – I am greeted with, “Howdy, Captain Howdy.”

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Oh, God. Shut up, shut up, shut up.

(It’s very difficult to ratchet down my responses – I am being triggered so very SOON after registering. I’ve always despised people who mistake ((and announce!)) their opinion as some kind of absolute truth. When confronting most of these self proclaimed “Bond experts,” it is soon discovered they haven’t even bothered reading Fleming’s novels.)

    Beatles, Stones.
    Mike, Joel.
    Ford, Chevy.
    Mac, PC.
    Connery, Moore, Craig, et al.

It is your OPINION. People like who/what they like. But if you dare try to shove yours down my throat by DISMISSING MY VIEWPOINT, I will simply bite DOWN like an unforgiving portcullis and witness the resultant bleed out.

  23. Easily my favorite Bond and a wonderful person, to boot (by all accounts).

I’d love to see them do his most riffable film, “Romulus and the Sabines”.

Given this is a site about riffing I’m a bit surprised nobody mentioned his playing Seymour playing Roger Moore playing James Bond in Cannonball Run. Those layers of meta gave Moore the chance to riff on both himself and Bond all in good fun.
